“Plane Spotters Paradise”
Reviewed 6 December 2011 for a stay in November 2011

The property is spacious and reasonably well-equipped with exceptionally large bathrooms, everything worked. The kitchen is small and is only ventilated by a small extractor fan that operates when the lights are switched on. As the kitchen has no external window this is rather irritating. The towels provided were very grey & worn and smelled strongly of detergent, they had seen better days.

The develoment is quite concentrated and the house is a semi-detatched and separated from the neighbouring house balcony by a masonry screen. Unfortunately the properties do not have good sound insulation and the neighbours late night return was all too audible with furniture being scraped around the floor in the early hours of the morning. The two adjacent houses on the other side were empty and for sale, so fortunately no problem there.

I was told that 'everyone' knows that Golf del Sur is on the flight path, as we had never been to Tenerife before, we did not know this. Not only is this house on the flight path, it is in fact on the final approach of the flight path, estimated flying time to the airport being less than one minute. Although some may not be bothered by the noise, we found it intolerable and largely incessant. I have never seen so many aircraft at such close quarters before: one afternoon we counted more than 50 planes in a period of less than 3 hours. It may have been nice to sit on the balcony on a balmy evening, however, the planes are flying so low that apart from the noise, you are virtually blinded by the landing lights. Looking down the road at the development and observing flights, it is unfortunately the case that the house, plus those nearest to it, are more directly under the flight path than others on either this, or the adjacent development.

A word of caution about the swish new health centre: at face value the consultations seem very reasonably priced, but the remit seems to be to extract as much money as possible by insisting on unnecessary procedures. It was the most unprofessional medical appointment ever experienced. What should have been straightforward with a simple prescription for antbiotics cost close to 130 euros clearly to the amusement of the doctor & assistant.

I accept that many people like the area & the island, but it could not provide us with the sort of holiday we prefer. Other parts if the island may well be attractive, this area certainly is not. We cut our stay short and were able to change our flight - sterling service from the Irish bar for printing boarding passes for us! Never thought I'd be so glad to see, cold grey UK.

We are sorry that these guests didn't find The Palms to their taste. Many people stay at The Palms on an annual basis for 3 or months at a time, and as it is residential, numbers of people have chosen to make this complex their permanent home.

The kitchen in 102 The Palms is very well ventilated, (as indicated in the photos on this website), with sliding doors, which open on to the stairwell and hatch doors that open directly into the lounge. With the outside doors open it is very airy. In addition to the ceiling fan, there is an expel fan in the hood above the cooker, both of which ventilate to the outside.

The planes come in clusters with hours of space in between. We have just spent some lovely, peaceful evenings watching the beautiful sunsets. Total disturbance is 25 minutes in 24 hours. We have however, just installed secondary glazing in both bedrooms as part of our on going improvements to our home.

The towels are professionally laundered and large new bath towels have been recently added to the considerable linen supply.

As advised in the ‘Extra Information” the Medical Centre is private. The first consultation costs 24 euros and a follow up consultation is 15 euros. It is only when you need to see a specialist that it is over 100 euros. Guests are always advised to have travel and medical insurance cover.
