“Trip of a lifetime in Spello, Umbria”

We recently stayed at Casa Spello, located in the hilltop village of Spello in Umbria, near Assisi, for a few days after being in Rome for two weeks. I work for a local lifestyle magazine here in the Bay Area, and have stayed at many charming hotels - but this is different - and better.

Casa Spello worked its magic on us the minute we arrived. We took an easy two-hour train ride from the Termini Station in Rome, rolling along scenic terrain with charming hilltop towns dotting the countryside.

It is an easy walk into town from the train station at Spello. The caretaker, Nadia, was there to meet us upon arrival and insisted upon toting our suitcases along the charming cobblestone streets. We instantly felt "at home" in Spello. The people are so nice and friendly - very different vibe than in Rome.

Casa Spello occupies a prime corner lot in the town of Spello - with sweeping views of the Umbrian Valley. The unit was so well-thought out and cozy. Best news - had all modern conveniences without being intrusive. T.V., wi-fi, well-stocked kitchen - all the modern amenities encased in an amazing medieval home.

(NOTE: We were staying at first-rate accommodations in Rome, but, it had nothing on the shower in our unit at Casa Spello. It is a rare and beautiful thing to have a shower that strong in italy!)

After Nadia showed us all the conveniences of our apartment, we set out on foot to explore. There are a lot of little stores and restaurants, with breathtaking views at each turn. The town is very manageable to navigate, and has won prizes for having the most beautiful flowered pathways in Umbria.

We took an evening drive about 20 minutes away to the hilltop town of Collepino. The La Locanda bar is a MUST - and the local restaurant, Taverna San Silvestro, offered literally some of the best food we had ever tasted. Order the lamb and pasta with porcini mushrooms and truffles, and tell them you are guests of Gina Waldman at Casa Spello. Everyone seems to know and adore Gina! We were treated like family.

We had a SECOND dinner that evening in Spello at La Locanda del Postiglione at via Roma 5. Again - never tasted a truffle crepe so delicious in our lives. Hands down the winner of all dinners throughout Italy - and right there in Spello. Again,be sure to mention you are staying at Gina's home at Casa Spello. They will be thrilled.

The next couple days, we toured Assisi and Perugia - both just 30-40 minutes away from Spello. Both very quaint and picturesque with very distinct personalities. Assisi is a lovely town to roam and meander, coming upon amazing churches and vistas and small local shops. Perguia afford a commanding view of the Umbrian valley - breathtaking. It is more populated and centered around a town square which hosts annual jazz and chocolate festivals.

Coming home to our apartment at Casa Spello made for a wonderful end to our amazing days of touring. You just open the front door, step out onto the patio and take in all the glory of Umbria. The place has a way of melting every thought you have away and you are left with the essence of this part of Italy - friendly, welcoming people, outstanding food and wine and the space and quiet with which to restore your soul and leave a more balanced and happier person.

Bon Voyage!

P.S. - I recommended Casa Spello to a close friend - who stayed there two weeks later.

“Live like a local in lovely Spello!”
Reviewed 17 October 2015 for a stay in September 2015

I stayed in the Cleopatra studio (#4) for 5 nights in September. Features and amenities were as described on the website and the cost was reasonable. The building itself is very pretty and there is a garden with seating right outside the back door. The studio is on the ground floor with the other three units above and adjacent. It's a bit cave-like, but large and very well lit, more than adequate space for one. Some noise from the overhead apartment, the refrigerator and the dehumidifier could be a problem for light sleepers. Summer cottage decor, with a comfortable bed and lots of seating. Well-stocked with everything from laundry detergent to a welcome bottle of wine. The bathroom especially was very clean; excellent water pressure. Strong, reliable WiFi. No A/C in this unit and the weather was unseasonably warm, but there is a quiet and extremely efficient ceiling fan over the main living area.

Casa Spello is perfectly located for exploring the village and just enjoying daily life. It's a short and charming walk to the main street, a matter of minutes really. This is a village with a life of its own, independent of tourism. So much local character to experience, as well as good food, adorable little lanes, and spectacular art. People are kind and welcoming. Nadia, the key-holder, was especially so. Always cheerful, so hardworking, nothing is too much trouble for her. She came to say goodbye when I was leaving and even gave me a small souvenir (with an extra for my mother!). I hope the owners realize her value.

Those traveling without a car should note that Casa Spello is a good 20-25 minute walk from the train station, which is in the lower town. Since I was visiting other Umbrian towns by train, this added significantly to daily travel times. As much as I enjoy walking (even uphill), I might have selected other accommodations had I known this. Something to consider if you are using public transport.

My wife and I stayed 3 weeks in this apartment and very much enjoyed our stay. The apt. is well equipped, centrally located and has a wonderful view of the surrounding neighborhood. The apt. is close to the main square of Spello but in a very quiet area. The owner was very accommodating and provided lots of information on events and things to do. Our stay turned out to be a very pleasant experience.

“Absolutely Amazing”
Reviewed 30 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

Our apartment at Casa Spello was absolutely amazing everything it had said it would be on trip advisor and more. From the time we arrived and met Nadia she couldn't of been more helpful going way beyond her normal duties of checking us into the apartment she would be an asset to any one's business. We were lucky to have Gina the owner staying while we were there and she organised a beautiful dinner for our group and another couple from the USA who were staying in one of the other apartments - what a wonderful evening thank you Gina.
We would certainly love to be able to stay in Casa Spello again one day.

“Wonderful stay in Spello”
Reviewed 20 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

My wife and I stayed in Casa Spello for a week. Everything from our booking process to arrival and stay was excellent. We really appreciated the personal attention we received from Nadia on first arriving in Spello. The visitor information that Gina has put together including restaurant recommendations was invaluable. Every suggestion she made was a great experience. We especially liked our group meal in Collepino with Gina and other guests from New Zealand. Casa Spello's location was perfect. The sunset views to the west were a nightly enjoyment. We stayed in Marc Anthony. The apartment was nicely appointed and provided everything we needed. Especially the washing machine. We have visited Italy a number of times, but this was one of the best.

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments. You were great guests and we welcome you back to Casa Spello anytime. We take pride of our hospitality and yes, you are right, the list of recommendations and itineraries I have prepared has been called by some guests :"the bible" or "the best tour book". I do a lot of research on events and places to visit before I recommend places to my guests, thats what distinguishes Casa Spello from other properties. Come again, Gina
