We stayed here 3 nights while visiting the Picos. The owner is so sweet and helpful and even speaks some English. The room we had was a larger double and very comfortable in size with views to the mountains in the back. A nice location for a drive up 5 kilometers for a hike to Bulnes. Breakfast is included but it is very simple, just coffee or tea, orange juice, 2 slices of toast with butter and jam and a plate of sweets...plus a plate with apple or orange or pear...some fruit. It is fine for a short stay. The village has lots of choices for dining plus some small shops that are fun. We really enjoyed the quiet of this village. One day we drove to take the cable car up which is a must do if the weather is clear. When I asked the owner about a place to do laundry, she offered to do it for us...and when I thanked her she give me a smile and advised that the price was a kiss on the cheek. Who cannot love that? A great stay.

Room Tip: There are only 9 rooms. We liked the room off the back side with doors that opened toward the mountains. We picked in others that looked very nice too. It is 45E for the smaller rooms and 55E for the larger room. Ours had a shower and tub and the tub has jets. Nice after hiking.

This is my 14th annual visit to Arenas de Cabrales and I have always stayed at this Hotel. It is very well located in this small Village and the family that rum it are very welcoming. The accommodation is fine for me as part of my walking holiday and this is a good base for many walks. The Hotel has its own Car park. The reception staff have little English but you get by!!

The cost is very reasonable and includes a small Spanish Breakfast. There is a very convenient Restaurant across the road that serves a set meal in the evening and is excellent value.

I will return next year.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the adjacent Anexe

We decided on Arenas to stay as it cuts down travel time to Cares Gorge and Bulnes. Weather was wet and the path through the gorge was closed after 7kms as one of the bridges was damaged.(Worth checking if you need to get to Cain at the southern end of the trail). Despite these setbacks, the hotel was very welcoming. Situated a few hundred yards from the town centre, along the main road to Panes, it's easy to find. The room was very clean, warm and comfortable, with a view of the mountains and a table and chairs outside on the lawn and another under the veranda round the courtyard. A deep bath with shower and jacuzi type water jets in the superior rooms is just what is needed after a long day walking in the fantastic Picos. We were out of season, so things were only busy at the weekend when the hotel car park soon filled up. As mentioned elsewhere, Begonia was friendly and helpful but little English is spoken in Arenas as a whole. Only points to mention are that no cards are taken at the hotel, so make sure you have cash. Breakfast was probably typical of the area, but juice, toast and cakes could have been supplemented by cereals, cold meats or cheese, all of which are available in the little supermarket next door. Very reasonable price. We will go back!

Room Tip: Superior rooms are well worth the little extra - if you can get one.

Loved our stay with the ever helpful Begonia but might have chosen one of the rooms with back garden and view of mountains if they had been free - ask to see these, or just book one. Rooms round courtyard with outside tables and chairs to picnic (or take inside if it rains), all spotless, big bed, big bath to soak away hiking aches. Large juice, toast, cakes and coffee/tea breakfast included with Begonia always there to offer further cups and advice on walking, buses, taxis etc. - she gave us a lift to the trailhead at Poncebos one day, beyond the call! Useful Supermarket Dia next door. If you're walking from bus stop in village, it's about 400 metres along main road towards Panes. Alsa bus services to Cangas de Onis and Oviedo etc. well integrated - we left at 5.35 pm and with two changes were into Leon just after 10pm. No buses from Arenas to Poncebos out of season, but taxis are v. reliable (turn up right on time in Poncebos to get you back) and 6.50 euros. Begonia will book for you - it's her brother-in-law! If asking for directions to hotel, ask for 'el hotel de Begonia' - no one seems to know the real name! A perfect stay apart from one day of rain and low mists - but even this was atmospheric.
