Well to give them credit they got us there and back without a wait and we had 1hr 40 to do the climb which was ample to go the whole length and have a drink and a snack at the end.
We got the mini-bus from the ruins and was told they weren't linked to the buses at the station. Interesting as when we came back one passenger asked to be dropped at the station and the office and other buses were all there!
We were told we'd leave when the bus was full, so there were 4, then 6, then 10, then 12. The bus driver said it was time to leave but there were only eight seats, no, he said, just move up. Not so much a problem as three of the passengers were kids but that meant no seatbelts.
On the way back there were 12 and we were ready to leave early so a different driver said we could get in his bus, that's 3 passengers per double seat and two on the FLOOR, two who'd paid €10 each had to sit on the floor for a 25 min journey on steep, winding roads.
This bus was super convenient for us as it took us past the ticket place and as close as you could get to the top by vehicle but if you get travel sick or you have any concerns over road safety it's not for you.

It looks like some people had a bad experience using Vesuvio Express, but my experience was just fine. €20 Will get you your return journey, your entrance fee and 90minutes stay up the volcano. The coach was clean, new and I felt safe going up the narrow, winding roads to the trail entrance. The driver made it clear of what time we were leaving to go back down before we got off the coach. 90minutes was enough time for the climb, a look around the crater, browse the shop and get back down again. A great experience.

Everything worked nicely, bus was on time and driving was sensible. Time at Vesuvio was appropriate, also for kids (age 7 and 10). Would choose this route again If returning to the volcano.

OK, to be honest, I was a little anxious about this service. We'd read the Tripadvisor reviews and our expectations were set to 'low' from the outset. But when in Herculaneum, it would be rude not to try and get to the very peak of the volcano which caused it to write itself into the history books, wouldn't it?

Travelling off-peak - mid February - we arrived knowing getting to the peak was touch and go. Remarkably, we could see the peak covered in snow from our Sorrento hotel, so knew an ascent may be out of the question.

And, indeed, when we arrived at the office next to the train station, we were told straight off getting to the top was off for the day - but we could get halfway up and admire the view (it was a beautiful clear day) for just 10 euros each....well, we took that.

The bus, despite the reviews warning otherwise, turned up on time and we all got on.

And off we went, but we didn't get very far...at some point near the foot of the volcano the road was closed where clearly we were expected to get a little higher...the coach driver got on the phone and after a brief chat appeared to be turning round.

Despite a couple of calls for some information on what was happening, it fell on deaf ears.

The coach simply returned back to the office without stopping or any chance of getting out and heading up a bit by foot.

I got the impression the anxiety over getting our money back given the reviews infected everyone on board, so en masse we descended on the office and, without argument, our cash was handed over.

So, in truth, apart from a non-communicative coach driver, the service did the best it could...just that, unfortunately, on the day we were there, that wasn't really offering anything.

It gets a mere 'average' rating not for any real failing, other than our own disappointment.

We were staying In Naples and got a train to Ercolano, asked the ticket office the best way to get to Vesuvius and he said “only one way and that’s the Vesuvius Express” ok fine. It’s early March there’s not a lot of people around, we paid €20 each for entrance to park and return journey. All seemed fine however the driver was an absolute nutter on the roads. Clearly too familiar, he overtook coaches and motorbikes on the road, it felt really unsafe. He had absolutely no patience and total disregard for our safety. Then when we arrived at the crater stop, it was 12.02 pm he said to be back at 1.20pm..... our ticket said we get 90 minutes of free time to walk around ( which isn’t long enough whatsoever at all ) so I was annoyed that he only gave us 1 hour and 18 minutes. What a rip off! You need a minimum of 2 hours to see this beautiful volcano. I am healthy and young and even I was struggling the walk up it took about 30 minutes of non stop walking up. So to stitch us out of 12 minutes was utter scandal. We wanted to enjoy a coffee at the top most cafe but we had to turn back after only a few photo opportunities because we didn’t want to be late or fork out on a separate taxi. I think you they need to change their rules. You should be able to hop on to ANY returning bus so you aren’t limited to one time slot, they certainly won’t be missing out on any money that way. We wanted to walk around more and enjoy myself but instead I was watching the time! I recommend you find your own way there next time if you want to take your time, unless you have a time schedule for other attractions/travels. The driving is absolutely crazy and you will not have time to relax and enjoy the incredible volcano without looking at your watch
