The site is amazing. The ticket queue was short and despite the large guided tours it felt quiet enough to explore at our leisure. There is water available throughout the site but take plenty of snacks. The toilets are ok, there are two sets available. We were there 2 1/2 hours with a reluctant teenager in tow so plan a morning or an afternoon for your visit.

This a a fabulous archeological site which is often missed by Pompei visitors but well worth a visit

Some difficult walking so probably not for the elderly

You need to go soon as the plaster is washing away every time it rains and the staggering neglect of the Italian government is shameful, this site will be wrecked in a decade

A magnificent, amazingly-preserved site. It is difficult to compare with Pompeii, because this was a wealthy resort town, but you are granted so much more access here. I would advise to visit this AFTER Pompeii.

Easily accessed down the hill from the Ercolano Scavi Circumvesuviana train station (from Naples, Sorrento, etc). Please note there are two stations at Ercolano!

The commune of Ercolano is rather impoverished and dilapidated. Be cautious of petty crime.

If you are fascinated about ancient history don't miss to visit the famous resort for wealthy Romans and Campanians. The 20 meter of vulcanic mud and ash preserved in fantastic condition the city. Calculate 2-4 hours for you visit, make your time to find all hidden places, worth it.

These excavations are a remarkable example of how the Romans lived. There is so much to see in such a small place . There would be so much more to see but the modern day Herculaneum has been unknowingly built over it . Everything has been so well preserved. The most moving part is when you see the skeletons huddled together at the then seafront trying to escape the heat and devastation of the volcanic force.
