This is really good value for money (while everything is very expensive in the neighborhood) if you want to be close to Torres del Paine.
Officially it's in Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, but not far from the treks, see http://www.visitchile.com/eng/south-patagonia-torres-paine/hotel-location.asp?id-hotel=TPA008. Follow the signs of the Rio Serrano things and you'll be fine.
The staff is very friendly and funny. If you speak just a little Spanish like we do, you'll manage to communicate. Lunchboxes can be assembled the way you want, dinner and breakfast are fine. And the view is still very beautiful if the wetter is OK.
If driving a rented car from El Calafate to the park, you'll probably be helped with some tips. There is a big chance you'll find NO PETROL on your way. The station in Villa Cerro Castillo is closed down and in Tapi Aike was without when we passed. Another thing: the border crossing El Turbio - Villa Doratea is much less crowded (read lesser tourist buses) than Cancha Carreras - Villa Cerro Castillo.
So you'll probably need to go the way Calafate - El Turbia (get petrol here, much cheaper than in Chile) - Puerto Natales (get you're Chilean pesos out of an ATM) - Torres del Paine.
Driving the unpaved roads in the park and the part of the RA40 between El Calafate and Tapi Aike is easy even with a Ford Ka. You don't need to rent a 4-wheel-drive.
