“Took the tram for an express tour around the zoo”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2012

We went here after recommendation from locals. There was no time for a night safari, so we went there an early afternoon during the school holidays.

The parking was quite full and so was the zoo. We chose to take the tram through the park because of the heat and humidity. The waiting time was around 20 long minutes, then suddenly there were 3-4 of the trams at the same time, and we got aboard :-)

The driver only talked Malay, so we understood nothing. During the 20 minute-trip through the park, he showed no sign to stop at the most interesting or popular animals, so it was impossible to take a closer look or get good snapshots of them.

Our children aged 3 and 5 were really happy to have seen so many exotic animals during the express trip. But we thought that the facilities for some of the animals were quite primitive. Especially some of the monkeys living in cages. The sanitary conditions seemed quite bad, and we refrained from visiting the toilets after watching them from the outside.

We had planned a walk to the most interesting spots after the tram tour, but felt we had had enough.

The entrance fee is 8 RM for children and 12 RM for adults.

“Resting Animals”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2012

For those who hate the sun, night safari save your energy from getting sun burn. Unfortunately almost all animals are resting in the cage. Said earlier was a 45minutes drive but ended up 10min early and nothing much explanation giving by the guide, i don't think he will give explanation in English.

“Interesting & can be better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 January 2012

This is my very first visit to night safari so I couldn't compare it anyway. I would say it's quite interesting & the kids definitely like it. As a Malaysian I'll definitely support it.

The Zoo is quite huge & in good maintenance. The whole trip itself was about 20-25mins max.

I believe it would be better if the train can go a bit slower so that visitors will have more time to spot the animals.

If you happens to be in Taiping & never been to night safari before, you may consider give it a try :)

“Excellent Malaysian zoo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2012

TIPS:
1. It is HUMID. Bring water along with you on your walk (which can be bought at a kiosk right after the ticketed entrance) and a fan, if you have one.
2. Have insect repellent, especially for the children. Malaysia's forests are tropical rainforests, after all, so be well prepared for all manners of insects and mosquitoes.
3. If you intend to walk the trails, arrive early when they open at 8am, as the grounds is rather large and the Zoo closes at midnight, which gives you only 4 hours of meandering time.
4. Parking in the lot closest to the Zoo is quite limited. Again, if you're driving, arrive early!

Our family of 5 adults, one 10 y/o and two infants visited the Zoo Taiping on New Year's Eve for the Night Safari. We had heard good things about the zoo, and since we were at the nearby Bukit Merah Resort for the weekend, we thought to make a special trip out to see the zoo (which was approximately 30mins away from Bukit Merah).

The Zoo charges a fee of RM16 for adults and RM10 for children aged 3-12. We didn't think this was very much at all, as this covers even the tram ride. Having called ahead to check that the Night Safari opened at 8pm, we arrived at that time to find most of the gift shops & food stalls closed, although one tuck shop, one restaurant and one souvenirs stall remained open.

Travelling with two infants, we pushed around a double-stroller. As always, it was bulky to manoeuvre even under the best circumstances, but the zoo staff were remarkably helpful and assisted us in loading and unloading the stroller off the tram before and after the ride.

My only prior experience of a night safari was the one at the Singapore Zoo, which itself is amazing. The Zoo Taiping grounds were somewhat less of a "natural landscape" compared to the Singapore Zoo, but I personally think it is better "curated" than the National Zoo in Ulu Klang. A lot of people were complaining that additional lighting could've allowed visitors to see the animals better, but I frankly thought it was just right, especially since the purpose of a Night Safari should be to see animals in their natural behaviour at night.

The tram ride lasted about 15 minutes and the guide commentary over the PA speaker wasn't intelligible at all, but I still enjoyed the ride. The tram then drops you off at the zoo exit, where you then have a choice of leaving or to walk around the zoo on your own. We walked and looked at the enclosures closest to the entrance/exit, but having two cranky infants, we didn't stay very long (which was a shame!)
