A place that lets you down

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Oct 2016
When one checks into a Heritage property, one is prepared to pay a premium for the service but in the end the service should be top class. This place, unfortunately, lets you down on multiple fronts. The first problem is that this being a Taj group hotel, one expect Taj hospitality. In recent past, I have found the service standards of Taj quietly slipping away.
The food is the biggest problem, nothing is at a level where one can call it average. Everything tastes subpar. On top of that the service standards in the restaurant are extremely slow. We waited for almost an hour before food was served.
The breakfast buffet is best avoided. If a restaurant situated in North India, so close to Delhi, can't cook Aloo Paratha, then they don't deserve to be in the restaurant business.

On top of that everything is charged at a premium.

The palace and rooms are really exquisite , but the staff will let down your expectations, wether it is room service, or dining or any other details that you will ask for . when asked for water bottles, i was told that the butler is on the way , but i recvd them after 2 hours , very bad check in experience .

We'd always wanted to visit Gwalior. Accommodation choices are limited but this Taj property was wonderfully located next to the Jai Villas Palace. The hotel - a palace built for the visiting Prince of Wales - is lovely, especially at night, and a real oasis in the centre of the city. The rooms are comfy and the bathrooms tastefully equipped. The menu is good if a little pricey and Rakesh, the head chef, the nicest guy you'll ever meet. The breakfasts are also good - I'd recommend the gobi paratha and cutting chai. It's well worth the extra expense ofstayingin luxury in what can be a stressful city.

I had booked for a luxury room. One thing that is striking good is the space that you get in the room. It is huge! .Especially if you are with 2 kids. They can play and run around in the room.
The staff is courteous and helpful. Pavan/ Mahima and team put up a good show. Rakesh, the chef, was ever helpful and brought about delicacies from the kitchen. This is a heritage hotel so the spread is not huge but good.
I got to stay in the Royal Suit as well (Chand Niwas) which was wonderful and we could see Gwalior fort from our private terrace. The hotel is adjacent to Jai Vilas Palace and 10 minute drive to Gwalior fort and Gurudwara Data Bandi Chor Sahib.
We visited Gurudwara Data Bandi Chor Sahib multiple times, which was one of the star attraction for us. Its a historic Gurudwara for the mankind.

Room tip: Since this a guest house turned heritage hotel , all rooms are different. Go for luxury room if you have kids along.
