The house is nice, spacious and but well maintained and, even if it's apparently a couple decades old, it doesn't feel its age at all. It's on three floors (four including the garage below), with a nice main room (big smart tv so you can even catch up with your Netflix faves if you feel so inclined) and proper, fast wifi. Its main feature is a lovely tented terrace with a big table, where we had many a good breakfast. It is in a good location - not directly on the sea but 50mt uphill, at the very end of a very quiet residential area. Children can go to the beach alone so long they're big enough to cross a small road. No problem parking the car right outside - no trees or other sources of shade tough so better have a/c. The beach nearby is large, not too crowded and very good - and from there to the coastal part of the city it's just a quick stroll. A great touch is that a very nice shower room has been built directly from the garage, which allows you to cool down and take away sand and salt right away when coming up from the beach. The house is pretty far from the big supermarket in the city and there are no shops in the immediate surroundings, so a car is useful.
The house has all the necessary kit for cooking, fridge, a microwave, dishwasher and laundry machine so it's very usable as a proper house. No tumble dryer but definitely no need for it!: the terrace on the top floor has a dryer rack and it gets so hot that clothes dry in minutes!
There wasn't any water in the fridge when we came but salt, pepper, sugar and a couple dishwasher tablets were provided. A nice touch is a Nespresso machine.
Also worth noticing that all the lines and towels are provided, so no need of bringing them from home.
Our stay was overall good, and the manager was always available on the phone in case of need. We arrived very late in the night due to a late plane, and her parents (the owners) were waiting happily for us without any issue.
The only real minus worth mentioning is the lack of air conditioning. The house in July month gets pretty hot, and even with all the windows and doors open and fans going, it simply does not cool down enough. Especially the smaller bedrooms stay hot at night, which made it less pleasant for us than it could have been as we aren't used to hot climate. There are ceiling fans in every bedroom but their bearings are not stable, which makes them very noisy: so the alternative is to wake up for the heat or be annoyed by the noise. As an aside, we also found some ants - but a couple traps bought at a local supermarket (and taking care not to drop crumbs near the bedrooms) fixed it.
All considered I would recommend the place, but perhaps, as it stands, not for the hottest months if you are sensitive to hot nights. However, the manager told me she plans to put a/c, in which case the house will become very good. Make sure to ask if it has been installed if you plan a stay in July or August.
About the surroundings: Altafulla is a lovely small city outside. outside the big commercial tourist ring, with a lovely castles (and en excellent cocktail bar in its courtyard :) and was most definitely a great discovery - nothing to do with the horribly touristic places like Salou nearby. If you have a car, there are a large number of places and things to see nearby (besides staying at the beach) so it's a very good base to explore the surroundings and the city of Tarragona.
In conclusion, we overall enjoyed our stay and we consider it a successful holiday.
