We stayed at the Southern Palms last June and had a nice holiday, certainly good enough to come back this year. However, this time the experience was poor. I readily accept that you get what you pay for, and the Southern Palms isn't Sandy Lane, but good customer service and manners should be a standard feature of all hotels.

Unfortunately, there are a number of staff that shouldn't be working in hospitality/tourism as they clearly don't want to be there and appear resentful and sullen, and possibly just aren't trained properly.

Some of the bar staff In particular, when greeted with a smile and friendly hello, don't communicate at all. I took this up with Ms Pollard the general manager, but she wasn't interested at all, and had a defensive approach from the start and I guess this form of management is indicative of the staff. Good managers generally breed good staff.

Watch out for the iced water station near the bar, sometimes we were told not to fill our water flasks although the tap never came anywhere near the top of our flask we were told for hygiene reason to fill them at the bar. Go to the bar to be told to use the water station. Conflicting advice literally everyday

The front desk team, as the first point of call for a new guests were comically poor with a total lack of interest and left you feeling under-valued and more of a nuisance - they were disingenuous basically.

The cleaning of the rooms was poor, the toilet bowl rim was a disgrace, filthy from when we arrived to when we left.

About 5 nights in to our holiday a family with young children moved into the room next door and we were awakened at 6am to screams and shouting from the children, which went on for a good hour. We asked to change rooms and was offered the room we had last time. Happy with this offer I asked if children would be next door, and when they checked they said yes - another family with young children. We were then offered a sub standard room without a view at the other end of the hotel which would have been a down-grade. As the hotel was low occupancy I asked for a suite upgrade, but was refused - a simple gesture at no cost to the hotel would have been a nice touch, but no.

The positives - food generally good and reasonably priced, although very few people ate in the hotel restaurant. Some staff were excellent - Rodney the water sports and pool guy was very nice, always a smile and a chat, exceptional ambassador for the hotel. We don't ask a lot - just polite, friendly staff. Shirley, Marcia and a couple of the other ladies working in the restaurant were excellent too.

With our holiday time slipping away, we decided to cut our losses and check out and spend the remainder of our holiday at the Little Good Harbour boutique hotel, a blissful place just north of Speightstown. Great staff, great management, perfect! Shame we had to pay for two hotels. When we told the management we were checking out 5 days early, they didn't even ask why...

Good-bye Southern Palms, it could have been a lovely holiday... Little Good Harbour will be having our future business when visiting Barbados, a beautiful haven costing only a little more than Southern Palms...

This story needs to be told...
Our routine has always been, coffee in the morning at the bar, occasional lunch by the pool, cocktails or beers with flying fish sandwiches or pasta for dinner. We then go to the supermarket across the street to buy a 1.5L of water. By early afternoon of the next day, we politely ask the bar to fill it up once with tap water. On our last night here, we asked the female bartender to fill it up with water, she leaves and comes back with her manager. She then gives us a glass of water and says "I can only give you a glass of tap water. You will need to put it in the bottle yourself."
With $1400 CAD for the 7 night stay and $400 CAD room charges for food/drinks, is this really the thank you that management leaves us with?
We spent $1800 on their resort and we can't get a bottle of water filled.

An absolutely wonderful hotel that has great charm. Made up of several buildings all painted pink and all in the colonial style this hotel really does give you the caribbean experience. The hotel staff were more than helpful and friendly, service was great! The beach is beautiful and quiet. The hotel provides beach loungers and there are plenty of palm trees to offer shade from the sun. The hotel restaurant and bar offered a wide range of great food for breakfast and dinner as well as mid day fare. They also do a complimentary tea/coffee service every day at four which we enjoyed very much. The hotel also had entertainment from a variety of artists ranging from traditional steel drums (our favourite) to more contemporary styles several times during our stay. The hotels situation in The Gap made it perfect to explore the many restaurant and bars along the strip. Our ten day stay was relaxing quiet and perfect!

First trip to Barbados and it was fabulous! Southern Palms was everything we hoped it would be. We booked a pool/garden view room but were really pleased when we were upgraded on arrival to a full sea view room (Room 207).
Lovely spacious room, comfy bed, nice balcony, small kitchenette area with kettle and microwave. Safe available in the room. Shower was powerful with good water pressure. Only negative in the room was the toilet which was temperamental to put it mildly!
Hotel right on the beach. Nice bar area with a steel band playing on a Sunday. Most of the staff were lovely and friendly - just one lady on reception when we checked out was somewhat surly.
Didn't eat at the hotel. Two small supermarkets in the Gap and a great place across the road for breakfast (Happy Days Cafe).
Some lovely restaurants in the Gap - our favourite was Harlequin which we visited twice. You can walk to the other end of the Gap in 10-15 minutes. Some nice bars along the way. Cocktail Kitchen was (not surprisingly) good for cocktails and Sharkey's did great ice-cream milkshakes. Our Friends Place across the road opened in the evening only and was nice for a drink and to listen to some live music. Their coconut shrimp was yummy!
Hotel has two pools, gift shop, launderette and crazy golf area.
Did an Island Tour with Glory Tours which was fabulous. Husband did the submarine trip. Also visited Kensington Oval as hubby is a cricket fan. Visited Oistins fish fry and made the mistake of getting on a reggae bus! Never again - got a taxi back!
Had a fabulous meal at Bajan Blue at Sandy Lane as our anniversary treat - lovely to see how the other half live! Most expensive lunch ever and no celebs sighted but it was a real experience!
So glad we chose St Lawrence Gap and Southern Palms for our special anniversary.

We just returned from another brilliant vacation at The Southern Palms. I can’t say enough wonderful things about this hotel. We were going to try a different country this year but when it came right down to booking our holiday, it had to be Barbados and specifically the Southern Palms, a place we love, enjoy and refer to as home.

The lovely attentive and caring staff are the main reason we return. They may be employees of the hotel to some but to us they are friends who are always welcoming and whom we look forward to seeing upon our return.

The hotel has an historic charm about it and the rooms the same. Every room is a little different with so much character and are always clean and ever so comfortable and we were given an especially fab room this trip that we always thought was reserved for special occasion guests. The linens and towels are always fresh and clean and white and the housekeeping staff do a wonderful job on the rooms and are friendly and helpful.

The property is very well maintained too, there are always workers around the hotel cleaning, gardening, raking, pruning, trimming and repairing whatever needs done. Beautiful trees and gardens are on the property. You will find some lovely birds here too and some are very friendly and will come right to your balcony if you feed them.

Whether you choose to eat in the dining room or the bar, the food is always fresh, prepared just as you like it and delicious with very generous portions and priced well. We eat here often. Can’t get better value anywhere else in the area. Their burgers have to be the most tasty I’ve ever had anywhere!

Their entertainment evenings are always great fun and lively including the Sunday afternoon steel drum band.

We enjoy their buffet nights too on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. There is always a great selection of food and their salads are yummy. Saturday nights also have a special British fare menu for those who enjoy bangers and mash and the like.

The pools are always spotless and beautifully lit up at night.

Dover beach is probably the most beautiful on the island (although maybe not the safest as red flags are often out) and unfortunately the sargassum seaweed returned to their waters and beaches this year which took away from it’s natural beauty but hotels have no control over Mother Nature.

Wifi in the room was wonky, with a very shallow signal. We often got no connection notices or server stopped responding notices, even though it appeared we were still connected.

The weather couldn’t have been better, sunshine every day. Hardly any rain. Such a wonderful time of year to be here. Baby chicks/cockerals everywhere, so heartwarming to see. Will definitely return this time of year again.

Unfortunately another amazing holiday at the Southern Palms has come to an end and all we can do now is save our $’s and look forward to our return. Highly recommend this hotel in beautiful Barbados. You’ll not regret it.
