“Let's not overstate it.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2012

We debated about a holiday in Gran Canaria for some time and decided to stay at the Mogan Playa mainly due to the excellent reviews. We stayed last week March/ first week April

Many points in the other reviews are correct, the gardens are lush interesting and extremely well tended. The site is long and narrow and the best use is made of it even if some rooms are quite a distance from reception. I think we were just as close to the beach as to the main restaurant!!
Some points I would make in order to rein in those made by others
* The staff are good but not as brilliant as some make out , certainly many speak when you meet them on the walkways but many just go on by doing their work - nothing wrong here but some reviews suggest otherwise.
* the gravel around the pools is a pain, to say it is an artificial beach suggest that some folk may not be familiar with a real beach.I see no benefit in having it whatsoever.
* Junior suites are inferior to others I have stayed in, the furniture especially in bedroom is sparse and wardrobe space limited.Balconies are cramped due to the loungers.
*Many families seem to book junior suites for the extra space this results in much noise in the afternoon as families return to their suite after a day at the pool.So if you want a quiet room those in the high building may suit better.
* Most suites are quite a distance from the reception building & restaurant although suite guests do have use of the restaurant building at the south pool for breakfast and this is very nice.
* Food is good by many buffet standards, however , the layout in the main restaurant is some what disjointed meaning one may have quite a bit of walking about to determine what is on offer, also the two sitting system ( 1800 & 2030 hrs) is something I have not seen elsewhere and I think the hotel should reconsider this system as many guests are not in favour of it.
* We had an instance where a particular item of hot food on the carvery ran out completely at 9 oclock , we were one of early diners in the restaurant when it opened at 8.30 we had our starters and went for our main course to be told it was gone and would not be replenished . I found this unacceptable. The manager I spoke to came back to offer some food from the a la carte restaurant but by this time we taken something else. He also offered a meal the next night in the restaurant but we declined. The speed at which this was offered suggested that it was not the first time he had encountered this compliant!
* Los Guayres the a la carte is excellent and I would recommend it , we ate there for our anniversary meal and were given a complimentary bottle of Cava which was a nice touch.
*Bar service at the Tamaragua bar (South pool)is slow more staff are needed and a hotel of this standard should consider having a waiter providing service to those around the pool. Perhaps the gravel prevents this!

Overall this a good hotel but I feel it is somewhat resting on its laurels as it has no competition in the area.

The resort of Puerto Mogan is pleasant if limited in scope for shoppers , the port area has a large numbers of restaurant, range of prices and choice is not huge but enough for the normal holiday maker, beware of specials on boards without prices as in many cases these are expensive and not 'special menu' that some might expect so check prices before ordering also wines in restaurants may be higher than expected.

The beach in the town is well kept and good for bathing and for families and the weekly market (Friday ) is worth a visit- it sprawls all over town so be sure to see it all.
The working harbour is worth a walk through and the ferry to Puerti Rico is a novel day out.
There is a disused road up the hill across from hotel ( it is marked private but lots go for a walk on it) it is interesting and offers superb views of the hotel ,town and port and is not as strenous as it looks.

We had not been to GC for many years and we enjoyed our holiday , the weather was fantastic for the time of year. I can see Mogan becoming more popular when the nearly finished motorway extension is opened , let's hope it is not spoiled by over development like so many other resorts.

Room Tip: Junior suites good for space in room but not on balcony, ground floor mostly with private gardens. A...

My wife and I stayed here in March 2012 for a week of winter sun following TA reviews and I guess that some will find my review hard to believe when so many others are complimentary but I'll give it a crack anyway - it's an honest review.

Theres no denying that the hotel has many plus points. The hotel is clean, the grounds are beautiful, the front desk is helpful and efficient, the rooms are nice and the heated pool is also a nice bonus in the winter sun - although the cat litter sand around the pool was very annoying !

What let the hotel down for us was the dining experience. This can only be described as complete chaos - anyone who denies this is the case are deluding themselves and are maybe not being 100% honest with their reviews. At £800 per person half board with Thomsons this should not be the case.

The dining room clearly cannot cope with the amount of guests and is understaffed by at least ten waiters and maybe four servers. It is obvious that the hotel has been extended a number of times after it's initial build with no thought give to the pleasure and comfort of their dining guests. The hotel have tried to overcome this by insisting on two sittings and allocated tables for the duration of your stay ( which is not strictly adhered to ) - this is school dinner stuff and ok when you pay small money. What's even worse is the queueing for freshly cooked fish and meat ...stand in line please !!!! At one point on the second night I counted 26 people queuing for some lamb chops. This was down to the poor design and layout of the serving counters and again being unable to cope with the number of guests.

We stayed at the Gloria Palace Royale last year for £710 per person and there was no comparison between the two hotels and It may be that the captive market wishing to stay in Puerto Mogan have no other choice of hotel and the lack of competition is to the detriment of the paying guest.

One of the reasons given for not coping with guest numbers was a "sudden" influx of tourists due to the unrest in Egypt ??? So what ? Correct me if I'm wrong but there's 45% youth unemployment in Spain and I'm sure they can serve on tables .........

Puerto Mogan by the way, is beautiful and not your stereotypical Canarian resort. There are plenty of nice restaurants around the harbour to suite every taste. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the harbour and beach and it's well lit and very safe at night.

Would I stay here again ?....No. Would I go back to the Gloria Palace Royale ...Yes.

Tip...If you insist on booking this hotel and If on arrival you feel let down by the dining experience please go and see Christian Radzuhn the guest relations manager who will make ammends.

Happy holidays !

Room Tip: Insist on a south facing high floor room.

Dear Valued Guest,

We would like to thank you for the concern you have shown us through your observations. We sincerely apologize, if in any way, we did not meet your expectations. We take all our guest comments very seriously as these help us to achieve the standards that we strive to please our treasured guests.

We would like to inform you that in the efforts to increase the guest satisfaction in our main buffet, we have introduced a carving station which has developed passion between our guests. Consequently, that has been reflected on long lines during peak hours in the dinner period.

The paradox is that an improvement measure has generated some complaints. Rest assured that we are working on this matter despite some infrastructure limitations that we cannot avoid.

We hope that this incident does not diminish your favorable regard of Cordial Mogan Playa and we're looking forward to serve you again.

Any other comments or suggestions you may have will be appreciated. We remain at all times at your service.

Sincerely yours,

The Management

2nd stay ay the Cordial Playa and it was even better than we remembered it. Brought 2 of our kids friends this time so my wife and I had 5 teenagers with us, The kids absolutely loved it.The hotel is so large and self contained that the kids often spent their day in the 2nd pool, and only returned to us for either money or food. That meant that my wife and I were allowed to laze away at the pool near the reception without having to wonder whether the kids were enjoying themselves.
So much has been written about this hotel that I do not need to repeat them but I will make a few observations.
Firstly, the management of the hotel is first class and the customer service culture is embedded throughout the organisation at all levels. The staff work incredibly hard but it is clear that they value and are proud of their hotel.Secondly, the environment is stunning. If you go on a first visit, you must make sure that you explore all the nooks and crannies. Delightful.
Thirdly, the food is fantastic in the context of large scale catering. However, if you want a culinary delight, do try the A La Carte restaurant. Silver service and remarkable food in a delightful atmosphere. Not cheap, but then you get what you pay for.
Our last night epitomises the the quality of this hotel. 2 of our friends and their 12 year old son had arrived at Porto Rico and wanted to spend the evening with us. Not only did the Manager rearrange our tables to accomodate our large party, but also supplied us with 2 bottles of champagne on the house.I can tell you that our friends will be booking a holiday at the Cordial next time theyt visit the island!
One tip. Don't forget you can walk through the grounds of the hotel in order to exit to Mogan town. Simply go past the 2nd pool, go around the small church, and use you key card to exit at the gate. You are virtually in the town center.
So, if there is a better hotel in the Canaries I would like to know where it is! My wife and family cannot wait to return and a huge gracias to all members of the Cordial staff. You are a class act.
For those of you reading my review, and are considering booking a stay, all I can say is go for it! And also have a look at the deals offered by Monarch on hotel booking only, rather than a package. We got a really good deal.

Room Tip: South facing for the sun in the early evening.

Stayed half board booking through Thomas Cook. The rooms were clean and fresh. The gardens were extremely well maintained and the plants were labelled with their botanical names. Good collection of palm trees and exotic plants. The food at breakfast and evening meal was excellent. Plenty of choice with a very good selection. Reviews on TripAdvisor are pretty spot-on here.

We always said we would never go back to a place as there is so much to see in the world but there is something special about this hotel. The staff cannot do enough for you and are always friendly, polite and attentive. The hotel is spotless from the beautiful, colourful grounds to the cool marble floored rooms. Although there are many rooms it is quiet and a spot on a sunbed with a parasol can always be found. The food is self service and you can eat all you want (and this is easy as it is delcious and full of choice). Activites are fairly low key so don't go if you are expecting high life and loud music!
The port is a few minutes walk and great to stroll down to after dinner. A few shops are handy for water and a snack if you have room! We took a taxi to and fro the airport (approx 45 mins and £90) but I am sure you can find it cheaper.
We will be back again for warm sun in April.

Room Tip: Overlook the 2nd pool for sun on the balcony and very near the pool.
