“Gili trawangan - things to do - 2009”
Reviewed 19 May 2009

Gili Trawangan is one of the three Gili islands off the North West coast of Lombok. Most of the activities listed below apply to the other islands (Gili Air and Gili Meno) as well. It is a great base to explore Lombok as well.

The island is surrounded by a white sand beach which is wider in some places than in others. There is a large hill on the south of the island and the rest of the island is flat. The centre of the island is made up of various types of farms.

The main restaurants and hotels are on the east coast. The food is excellent and there is a variety of accommodation. You may book or just arrive and find accommodation but in the peak season I would recommend to book. Prices seem to vary up and down from 100 000 for fan room, 200 000 for air conditioning and 400 000 for air con and pool including breakfast. Some hotels charge much more.

There are three party nights a week where the music can be loud depending on how close your hotel is to the party. The mosque has an early morning call to prayer which is great as an alarm clock for positioning yourself for the beautiful sunrise.

The locals are friendly, helpful or indifferent. Some call out to women as they walk the street at night but that seems to be the limit.

Trek to Rinjani – volcano on Lombok

Day trips to Lombok

Snorkel trip to three islands 75 000 rupiah

Surf – board and body board

Horse riding

Cimindo (horse and cart0 around island or to specific destinations

Diving – heaps of professional dive places

Top hill sunrise

Turtle hatchery – but where is it???

Charter boat ½ or full day – fish, snorkel, and laze around on waters, visit islands or combos of these. 400 000 to 600 000 rupiah

Sit at sunset bar at sunset – an area on the south of the island that is a large viewing platform along the beach and shaded by trees.

Cruise and eat at all the restaurants

Mushroom shakes – mind trip

Massage – 185 000 rupiah for 90 stone massage

Snorkel off beach and drift along with the currents – north, north east, between surf breaks.

Catch inter-island ferry to Gili Meno (30 000 rupiah) or Gili Air (35 000 rupiah). Leaves 9:30am and returns at 3:00 (Air) and 3:30 (Meno). Boat also leaves at 4:00 pm so you will need to stay overnight on the other islands.

Public boat to Bangsal – 10 000 rupiah – leaves every hour once it has 25 passengers.

Charter boat to Gili Air or Gili Meno – 250 000 rupiah one way.

Nothing – this usually seems the best thing to do.

Worse points: noise on some nights - take ear plugs, calls from locals. At times sea lice and stinging jellyfish – check before going into the water.

Best points: food, beaches, water and views

Tips: if negotiating for activity make sure both parties clearly understand what will be happening e.g. on a boat trip – where you will be snorkeling.

“Almost Perfect Island”
Reviewed 8 February 2009

The island looks idyllic on the photos and it nearly is so, surrounded by a coral reef the water is clean and a blue/green colour with sand all the way round, however, this is partly spoiled by the amount of broken coral, which can make barefoot walking difficult.

The 'strip' on the east coast is where it all happens and the beach is covered in trip and dive boats. The north beach is the best, has pink sand and quite a few trees for shade. The west and south coasts, whilst pretty have mainly been surrendered by to nature.

The majority of tourists have come to dive or snorkel, but we only heard of disappointment in both.

Accommodation varies from (what we found) 9 pounds for an en-suite bungalow which was a little dirty but included breakfast, to 95 pounds a night, but for that you did get your own jacuzzi and plasma TV. We chose a clean bungalow with TV and breakfast without a/c for 15 pounds a night.

There are no police so cannabis is freely available and smoked. 'Magic mushrooms' are everywhere and even on the menu in some restaurants.

Eating out is cheap, although the better places on the south of the strip cost more. Our favourite was the Manta Cafe which was clean and nice with candles on the table, we both had a meal and a large beer for £5, 50p for the two.

There are no cars, trucks or motorbikes (thank goodness) so the only transport is pony and trap. They told us that the ponies worked only half a day and were changed in the afternoon and that they never worked at night. Yeah right!! Then what were these looming out of the dark, cantering towards you with a group of Japanese in the back at midnight? We guess they get bank holidays off also. Yeah right!! A nice place Gili Trawangan, good for 5 days!

“Cannot wait to return!”
Reviewed 3 January 2009

There were 5 of us and each of us had wonderful time while in Gili Trawangan. It is nothing compare to Kuta, Bali. Nice sandy beach, no hassles from local vendors, people were friendly, water was nice, everything was great.

It was our very first time going to Gili Trawangan and we didn't expect there will be rental places for snorkel; we brought ours all the way from Canada which almost gave us a very hard time at the Indonesian airport. My spouse lost his snorkel as soon as he jumped into the water ha-ha, but we were lucky there were rental places, so he could continue enjoying the water. The fishes are colorful; they are gorgeous. It was really nice snorkeling in Gili Trawangan.

What I didn't like was the boat ride from Senggigi to Gili Trawangan. On the way to the island, there were only two appointed persons to take us there, but once it was time to take us back to Sengigigi, they allowed quite a few more local people to take the ride with us without telling us whatsoever; that was weird.

Shopping in Gili Trawangan (for clothing or souvenir) was also not that easy as in bargaining; but it was worth it because I didn't see what they were offering there back in the city (like in Mataram, etc)

You can also see humble turtle sanctuary.

The horse-carriage ride from where the boat dropped us were cheaper compare to the ride from our swimming spot back to the boat.

Our "warung" was not fancy but it was good enough, sorry the name doesn't come to my mind for now. We ordered warm sandwiches and some beers. I believe out boat ride people/company has some kind of agreement with the warung, because when we arrived we wanted to stop elsewhere but they headed us there.

All and all, it was a great experience, really can say, cannot wait to return there; maybe next time we will stay over night or so.

“White sandy beach, beautiful underwater view....”
Reviewed 16 November 2008

I love staying at Gili Trawangan. The island has numerous bars that held party every night and delicious restaurants with fresh seafood. During the day we rent a glass bottomed boat - Blue Star - with two young snorkeling guides. The underwater view was breathtaking. Our snorkeling guides - Joe (from Juhaidi) and Rusdi were very young, yet know the sea in the three islands very well. We sailed around the Gili T, Gili Air and Gili Meno. Gili Air has very friendly fish that swam around us (somehow the fish knew our guide very well!) while Gili T has plenty of tutles (they were big & beautiful). Gili T seawater has quite numerous jelly fish, but not the case in Gili Meno nor Gili Air. The jelly fish were not poisonous though, but could be very itchy, so it is better to swim/snorkeling in Gili T's water in late afternoon.

Gili Trawangan is a cool place . You don't have cars , motobike .Everyone say is a party Island but it is a place where you have both calm and party - who are nothing special from my point of view-
What is great in Gili is that everyone is chill out and you don't feel like a walking wallet .
The diving is good but the corals sucks ...
The beach is nice except the current are strong
the locals people are really really nice, even if the young ones are really too much flirty , and sometimes unpolite when you refuse their advance..
