Il Borgo
Reviewed 18 September 2015

Il Borgo has wonderful, far-reaching views of the gorge and surrounding mountains from the pool-side, though you will not get these from some parts of the hotel – especially from the hotel-facing side of the new annexe part where we stayed. Our room was spacious enough with a large king size bed (very firm mattresses). The room had good air con and a roomy powerful shower. There was no noise at all at night, which was bliss.

The buffet breakfast, taken in the characterful old farmhouse building, consists of all the usual continental offerings: fruit, yoghurt, breads, cakes, pastries, boiled eggs and little cold antipasti. Jugs of fresh squeezed juice and coffee made to order. All quite yummy.

The pool / poolside was almost always deserted during our September stay as most people seem to use Il Borgo as a base for a few days from which to go exploring the area. The pool is unheated and not very large, but adequate for a short burst of front-crawl or for a cooling dip.

The car park is small, though if full there is always room to park on the road outside and this wasn’t a problem for us.

The reception staff were often busy, but sweet and helpful when needed (including assisting us in figuring out how to pay a parking fine we managed to pick up in Taormina!).

Our local highlights were: Alcantara Gorge, 5 mins drive; Etna (north), about 1 hour’s drive to Piano Provenzana; Castiglione - wonderful atmospheric, medieval hill-top town, 20 mins drive.

Il Borgo was not really my definition of a ‘luxury resort', but that was not what we were looking for and had a perfectly nice stay in this lovely rural setting.

Room Tip: Ask for a room either in the main house or on the gorge side of the annexe facing away from the main...

Very nice place to stay, good food, nice & amazing surroundings, wild & picturesque, nice rooms, colonial style, amazing pool. The location is in east Sicily, beautiful, closed to Etna volcano. I enjoyed every minute of it!!!

Room Tip: The best: the rooms in 1st floor, above the reception

Great spot, nice large pool (which was pleasantly cool first week of July!), super friendly and helpful staff. We probably had the best room (nr 12), huge, quiet, with a great view, private court yard. Great opportunities for trips, ok restaurants close by (especially Uliveto Grill and the new pizza place in Gaggi).
The menu changes daily at the restaurant, but it's kinda similar (but very good). Wine list is OK, but room for improvement there - since Etna is 'round the corner.
Relaxing

We enjoyed our one night stop here on our walking tour in Sicily. We were made to feel most welcome when we arrived tired and thirsty. The food and local wine was delicious and we would have liked to stay longer!
The surrounding countryside is fantastic for walking or just sitting by the pool looking out over the lush green hills.

Don't be fooled by the advertising, this property looks a lot bigger than it really is. The pool is very small, the parking area small and not very convenient. Most of the rooms are in a "new" block just across from the original building and can be quite noisy as it is designed with rooms off one corridor which is high and echoey. The barbeque area I don't think is ever used and it is not surprising as the wall with a large drop is starting to giveway and the floor is sinking and cracking but you would not us it because of the armies of ants. This needs attention. The store room door around the pool area was in a bad state and the plies of the plywood were peeling away. This also needs attention. Having said that the staff were very polite and helpful and the dinner not quite the best of our tour of Sicily but up there near the top. Quite formal and a very helpful waiter. The breakfast was again not the best but very acceptable. Would use again because of the beautiful view an closeness to local attractions.
