“A trip in June”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2012

My mother, sister and I stayed at Iberostar for 4 days in June. Overall, a pleasant experience - beautiful grounds, lush topical greenery, birds all around. The ocean is very nice (although watch out for the rocks in the water). We were always able to find seats @ the beach because we preferred to sit away from the action and the noise (ie the bar and the hotel's entertainers - not my cup of tea). The food was good (although wouldn't call the buffet gourmet dining)- beach paella was delicious. We ate at the Colonial Restaurant - not too impressed, grilled lobster was overcooked; the steakhouse was much better - steak done just right. It rained one day - there was a leak in our room (in building 3).
On the down side- the guys selling souvenirs from little shacks on the beach are pretty aggressive, practically chasing you to come and look at their wares...wish the resort had designated smoking/non-smoking areas...and -this is my own personal preference - would have liked if there was more of a mixed crowd among other guests (as we are used to Mexico where there are many more Europeans/Canadians), but overall we had a nice stay!

We stayed for a week at Iberostar in Bayahibe, DR. The food was good and they had a good variety through out the week. We enjoyed the specialty restaurants, They make a big deal out of having reservations, but they were mostly empty while we were eating in them.

The pools were nice and clean. Get there early to save yourself a lounge chair, otherwise you may end up on the beach several rows back from the water.

The rooms were big and clean. Take my advice and bring a two prong electric outlet strip with you. There are very few plugs to use and they are recessed and hard to get to.
The "black-out" curtains work great - the room stays dark and allows you to sleep late. The rooms were very quiet also. We stayed in building 6 - first floor - pool view..

If you plan to scuba dive - DO NOT use the on-site dive shop. They are expensive and very rigid in their schedule. They only do a "1 tank" dive every morning.
We used ScubaFun in Bayahibe - John Sack owns it and Jessica was our Dive Master. They will pick you up and drop you off after the dive. They will accomodate your every need.

If you are looking a for a tourist destination with t-shirts shops, Carlos and Charlies, and shopping - this isn't the place. There is none of that here.

Lastly, BRUSH UP ON YOUR SPANISH! Very limited English is spoken - Not a bad thing, but something you should be prepared for. Also know that the airport is 1 1/2 to 2 hours away in Santo Domingo. Purchase the shuttle package thru your travel agent - it's worth not having to hassle with finding transportation to/from the airport..

Dear Guest tws34,
On the behalf of the Hotel Manager, M. Amando Pozo, and his team, we would like to thank you for posting a review about your experience among us and for choosing Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus for your vacations.
We appreciate your positive lines about the cleaning of our hotel grounds, our varied gastronomy and the friendliness of our staff members. In Iberostar we are committed to ensure a memorable stay to our beloved guests through a clean hotel, a wide gastronomical variety and a high qualified team.
I would like to clarify our a la carte restaurant reservation system. Although restaurants might be seen partially empty, we offer four sitting so our guests can choose from a wider range of eating times and can enjoy from a relaxing (no stress, no hurry) sitting. Some other hotel book the entire restaurant in a sitting, but then the guests have to hurry up while eating because there may be more guests waiting for a table in the next sitting.
We are looking forward to welcome you back. Please contact us before your next visit.
With kindest regards,

My wife and I decided to try an all inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic and picked Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus after much research. We booked our trip through Delta Vacations. Trip Advisor reports were very good for this resort, and the pictures that were posted really helped “see” the place so we were not going in blind. The reservationists at Delta Vacations were extremely helpful and made the experience that much more pleasant.

The Iberostar resort is a 2-hr ride from Santo Domingo which is the airport we used, but the trip gave an opportunity to see the countryside. After enduring a long plane ride and a long car ride, we were not prepared for the check-in process at the resort which was not what we expected. The clerk was not helpful and rushed us through the process. He gave terse responses to my questions which left me feeling a bit uncomfortable about the place we had chosen. However, the exquisite resort grounds and the wonderful food more than made up for the unsatisfactory check-in experience.

It would be difficult to take a bad picture at Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus. Everywhere you look as you walk among the property, the architecture and landscaping are picture perfect. The colors of the buildings, the interesting courtyards, the myriad tropical plants many with fruit, the water features all blended into a perfect setting for a relaxing vacation. Dotted throughout the grounds was colorful bird life including pink flamingoes, a white swan, multi-hued ducks and beautifully colored peacocks that calmly posed for pictures.

While it would seem difficult to have good food service for so many people, I give very high marks for all of the restauraunts on the property. The Ingenio buffet had a great variety of delicious entrees and desserts. The wait staff was friendly and kept glasses filled and tables clean. Food choices reflected North American, Caribbean, South American and European tastes. The four restaraunts that required reservations had excellent menus. I highly recommend the grilled lobster at El Colonial.

The stretch of beach along the property displayed its trademark Faro Bar which was a tall, concrete lighthouse facade with a bar built into its base. Whether walking along the wide expanse of beach or travelling by boat offshore, the black-and-white striped faro was a beacon showing the way to Iberostar.

One thing that could use improvement was the nightly entertainment at the teatro. We have seen much better shows on cruise ships. We also would have liked to walk on the beach at night, but it was discouraged.

Be aware of room 1004 (building no. 1) which we affectionately called the peacock suite. The birds loved to roost on the railing of the balcony and even walk on the balcony. Often people were taking pictures of them so whoever was in the room had little privacy. We also noticed there was no table or chairs on the balcony.

Be aware, too, that smoking is allowed almost everywhere on the property including the restaurants.

I will consider Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus for future vacation plans.

Room Tip: Choose building 2, 3 or 4 on the "garden" side. Request a 2nd or 3rd story room.

I have stayed at Iberostar Quetzal in Riviera Maya Mexico a few times and absolutley loved it so thought will give La Romana a shot. It was my first time traveling to Dominican Republic we have stayed for 15 days. There are a few positives and negatives about this hotel. First I don't speak spanish and have found out that if you don't speak the language you are ignored more often as at the buffet area when going for breakfast or lunch the waiters/waitresses generally don't clean your tables right away or bring drinks it's more serve yourself. The restaurants were good especially the Hacienda I had their red snapper twice was delicious and the steakhouse was delicious as well. The food is decent can't say anything negative about it. I found that men are generally better workers and women tend to be on the lazy side. Also the waiters/waitresses don't walk around the pool or beach area to offer drinks you need to go to the bar yourself. The pool area is great there are three pools one for water sports another pretty deep one almost 6 feet in depth and the main pool is great not very deep water was warm for a none swimmer like me it was great. The beach area is also pretty good has a lot of umbrellas for shade and always seats available. The ocean on the other hand is not the best. The water is not very clear looks merky can't see your feet when you look down and the tide is strong you can feel the ocean pull you in and most of all it is very rocky. Rocks everywhere can't go in barefoot will cut your feet. They grounds are very clean and beautiful. Currently they are doing construction at the beach area building a new gym and spa as well as some work at the lobby area. The entertaiment team is great! Always something going on at the pool area and beach. I have to say Dimas and Lady Gaga are great they made my stay a lot more enjoyable and fun. Overall it was a nice stay the weather was great not very humid. If you want to just go and relax and not be bothered by anyone it's the place to be.

It's our 5th time to DR. We traveled with 4 kids, ages 15, 12, 4 and 1. We liked the resort a lot! Beautiful grounds, close enough to everything. Rooms were nice and clean, I have to add that the whole resort was very clean. Many gift shops with good quality merchandise. Had no problem with checking in, room cleaning or anything else. The staff was great, always polite and saying "Hola", especially waiters and waitresses at the main buffet. Highchair for our 1-year old was always available. The food was good, something fresh and tasty always cooking, really enjoyed fish and pork, breakfast was very good: do try their hot oatmeal! We especially enjoyed beach cook-outs, they didn't have a huge variety, but what was there were really tasty: freshly made guacamole, baked potatoes with creamy garlicky sauce, seafood shish-kebab and grilled chicken.. Star friends were great, very friendly and entertaining, you won't be bored at the shows.. Never had any problem finding a shade on the beach or pool, chairs were available, didn't have to reserve it at 6 am, like others did. Pool area was great, especially on the side with shallow bottom for babies and small children. There is plenty to do, you won't be bored! Now to the point. If you travel with little kids DO bring mosquito repellent, because of the ponds and humidity you may be bitten a lot. We were disappointed in the beach, because of the big waves.First I though it's the time of the season when you have more waves then usual, but the beach at Dreams resort, people stated they had no waves whatsoever. So,If you came for the beach with your little ones, they won't be able to be in the water, because of the waves and rocky bottom, and its a shame, because the water is so warm!.Also the beach is on the incline and it was hard for little kids to walk or play near the water. Our youngest kids were in the water ones, because they were uncomfortable with the waves. That's the only reason i gave the resort a Four, but it's not their fault i understand. Another thing about the beach is that cigarette buds are everywhere, although there are stands with trays filled with sand at every palapa. I guess it's just a matter of good manners and respect for the nature, people who clean and a country where you stay. We also had to use medical services for my son's allergy, everything went nice and smooth, but I do recommend getting travel insurance with medical coverage, because their fee is high. We payed $180 for the doctor's 30 second glance at my son's rash, two meds and a medical report for the insurance company. If you have bigger health issues it will cost you a lot more. Other than that, we enjoyed our time at Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus. Although we won't be back, because of the beach, we recommend the resort for those who could care less for calm waters.

Room Tip: Building 3 garden view rooms are very quiet
