We were looking forward to trying out the "new" Windermere Cafe with a new name, owners, renovated look and menu (not that we had found anything wrong with the previous setup). With no one around to greet us when we arrived, we sat down at an empty table. No menus on the table or anyone coming to offer us one so eventually we went ourselves and found the only one that seemed to exist near the cash register on a clipboard. After deciding on our meals, we looked around for someone to take our order. There was nothing about having to “order at the counter” but we did anyway. Looking to order three cottage pies and a beef burger we were told they only had one serving of the cottage pie left even though it was only 12.30 p.m. and there was only one other customer in the cafe. Finally we ordered the remaining cottage pie, two beef burgers and a meat lasagne each costing around $18.50. The burgers didn’t come with hot chips and these were $5.00 extra. After a short wait for the food and having to ask for cutlery, we were extremely disappointed. The cottage pie was tasteless and covered in a thick slick of oil, the lasagne was mostly béchamel sauce and the burger buns were cold, didn’t seem fresh and the meat patties were dry and also tasteless coming with just a slice each of beetroot, tomato and a bit of lettuce and onion. With non-alcoholic drinks, the cost for four was just short of $100. Even when we paid, there was limited interaction as the owners were more interested in a friend that was visiting. We had high expectations after the advertising was promoting a chef as one of the new owners but we would have had a better meal from the petrol station up the road.
