This is a small but very friendly hotel. There are always plenty of sunbeds even when the hotel is full. We love having our breakfast outside on the patio. This was our 5th stay at the hotel and we will definitely be back next year.

People at reception are very friendly and even speak fluent dutch. Food at restaurant has a good variety. Room and swimming pool are very clean. Location is splendid, not too busy and near to the beach.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet

Approaching the hotel from the main Avenue Brussels, the first impressions are a bit mixed as the main entrance looks impressive, but the rooms you can see from the road look a bit like they should be in a 2* American motel.
Once inside we were quickly checked in with the minimum of delay, and passed to the baggage clerk to take us to our room. Unfortunately, he gets a phone call on his mobile and we have to wait several minutes while he chats away. As I have been travelling for 12 hours, been up since 03:00AM and are dressed in clothes for the sub zero temperature start of my journey, I just want to get to the room as soon as possible and change out of the clothes & shoes. When he is ready to take us to our room, he does an excellent job of showing us where everything is and what times they are open. He takes us into the corridor on the ground floor. Coming from the bright sunlight outside, this is gloomy & dark and I struggle to find the slot to put the card in for my room. The corridor has 2 large fire doors which block out the natural light. At night, it is lit up very brightly and is not a problem – just during the day.
The room (standard room 119A) is a good size, very clean and looks like it has been re-decorated within a few months, although there are a number of poorly repaired marks on the wall and a small hole. There is plenty of wardrobe space to hang clothes (dresses, trousers, shirts etc), but not much space for other things as most of it is taken up with additional blankets. The beds were comfortable and there were 3 chairs available. We also were given some fruit & a bottle of fizz, plus in the bathroom there were the usual soaps etc, plus 2 poolside towels and towelling robes & slippers. The bathroom was again very clean and functional. There is a fridge in the room (free use) and a safe (2 euros charge per day). Given that this is described as a “Standard” room in a 4 star hotel, I think the description is just about right, and I think it was perfectly acceptable as there is basically nothing wrong with the room itself.
Outside of the room there is a patio with 2 chairs and one table, but because this is a ground floor room it also has 2 sunloungers as well. Beyond this is about 5 metres of grass that anyone can use and then a concrete wall which is set just below the road level, and the wall is topped with a kind of bamboo screen to stop people on the road looking into the rooms. If I had known that this was going to be the room view, I would not have bothered to travel 2000 miles to see it, and would not have booked into this hotel. The road (London road) can be occasionally noisy (more from people talking as they walk past), but is not normally troublesome, and at night it was very quiet. There is a room noise issue here but it comes from the neighbours. Above sounded like a baby elephant with clogs on that walks up & down the room for hours across the floor tiles, then to the side is someone that come in at 04:00AM and takes a bath, and on the other side is someone that wakes up at 05:50 every morning (including Sundays) and puts the TV on.
The pool area is kept clean as is the 2 pools themselves. Both pools (same sort of size but slightly different depths) were rarely full and quite often we were the only ones in them. The water temperature was perfect - nice and warm. There was a small number of people who reserved sunloungers between 08:00 and 09:00 but getting one was never a problem to us as there were always plenty spare both by the pool or in other areas in the hotel. Next to the pool is a poolside bar serving drinks & snacks, but I did not use this facility. It seemed a bit underused and I think they could make more use of it by getting the waiters to go around asking if people wanted drinks, as they could sell a lot more this way.
The best part of the hotel that I liked was the restaurant. The food at breakfast and also the evening meals was superb, and all the staff gave excellent service. The one thing I did notice was that many people either did not drink wine with their evening meal, or they drank small amounts and kept the same bottle for 3 or 4 nights. This is probably down to the high cost of a bottle (starting around 18 to 20 euros). I think if they reduced the price of a couple of basic wines to say 10 euros, they would sell a lot more & make more profit.
In the evening there was always entertainment. There was the piano player as we went into the evening meal which I thought was unnecessary, then they usually had a couple of main acts. I thought the hotel here was trying to do something positive to get some atmosphere and a bit of life, but most people did not bother to try it out. I thought most of the acts were quite good but it must have been very difficult for them to play before a small audience.
There was one area of the hotel that I did not like, and would have asked to move if I was placed there. It is on floors 3 & 4 of zone B where the corridors/walkway are quite narrow and sometimes blocked with the maids trolley. If a fire breaks out in any room, or the storeroom or on the trolley a part of the way along these corridors, then there was no other way out that I could see. So you could be in danger. I am not an expert in this but it would not be allowed in the UK as you MUST have an alternative exit.
I would not recommend this hotel if you are disabled or do not like stairs as the hotel is built over several levels (Reception near the top, next level is the restaurant, and lower level is the pool area. For 99% of people this is not an issue, but as there is only one small lift that reaches all levels (another lift that goes between floors 2 to 4), then if that lift breaks down or there is a fire, I do not know how you would manage. While I was there I did see a couple of people in disabled wheelchairs, so it may be okay for some, but I would not risk it.
In the surrounding area outside the hotel, you are within 5 minutes walk of the sea front, several supermarkets, several shopping centres including the very upmarket Plaza Del Duque, the buses stop about 150 yards away (very reasonably priced & frequent), and there are many shops, bars & restaurants close by. The immediate area around the hotel is mostly other hotels and is generally quiet and very safe to walk around at any time (day and night).

Overall, I would say this is a very good hotel that ticks all (except one) of the boxes. It is very well run, has excellent food & service, the staff are generally brilliant, and the whole place is very clean (I never saw a scrap of litter at any time during my 11 day stay). The only downside is the standard rooms. While the actual rooms are acceptable, the design & layout of the whole site is poorly designed and looks in places like an American motel. I feel a little sorry for the current management as this is the one thing that is now almost impossible to change, but they have got almost every thing else correct. They could however brighten up some of the corridors as the hotel is mostly painted in a dark terracotta colour.
I think they will just say why not upgrade to a Superior room, and this is possibly the answer. However, the Standard rooms are already about 20% higher in price than the nearby 4* Fanabe hotel, and by upgrading to Superior (another 20% ?) would take this well above my limited budget, so I therefore think that I am unlikely to return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid the Standard rooms or any on rooms the ground floor. Even some of the better rooms on the grou...

Thank you very much for your detailed comment about your stay with us, about our installations and about your experiences gained during your stay.
We are glad to read that you enjoyed your stay in general and that we could reach some of your expectations.
We are a wheelchair friendly hotel and we do have ramps in every part of the hotel and we normally do not have problems with clients who come with their wheelchair. We never had reclamations or anything as we provide disabled rooms, ramps and lifts. As we are only a very small hotel, you just find a couple of lifts. We also would like to inform you that we are "health and saftey" checked by different english tour operators.
We also would like to inform you that we have different room categories with different views". Our standard rooms are street facing, our pool side rooms are facing the pool (not necesarily pool view) and our poolside rooms superior are renovated rooms facong the pool (not necesarily pool view). Depending on your budget and what you are looking for you can choose between the different rooms.
Once again we would like to thank you for your time writing a comment here on tripadvisor.com and hope to see you again in the future.

Kind regards.

my boyfriend and i stayed there in january 2012 for 11 days, we booked and paid for room in advance and were sure we made a nice choice of 4 star hotel. to our deep disappointment we got one star room in four star hotel. Three days we couldn't have bath (it was a dirty old bath with spots covered by oil paint to cover errosion), toilet was leaking, the room itself was dark; We booked a room with a double bed, instead we got two single beds moved together, not nice if you are used to cuddle your beloved when sleep, the mattresses and pillows were uncomfortable, every morning before 9am a crazy girl without ceremonies knocked the door to check whether a room bar full or not; on 4th day after meeting a top hotel manager they changed the room saying that they have refurbished rooms, it improved our mood (though this hotel dont have double beds at all, only moved together single ones, at least the beds were new and mattresses more comfortable than in old rooms). Receptionists were not attentive to customers at all: only after 9 days staying there we learnt that there were djakuzi, that is far from swimming pool in a hotel building on C level; we never got help and discount booking hotel though again in their broshures it was offered as well as discount in their sister's hotel restaurant . so we should have read all small broshures in the room on the first day of arrival..Are you ready to read them all on the first day? the positive thing was only breakfast, it was nice patio and good chef who cooked for you fresh meal, quite nice waiters who helped you to find a table and served coffe or tea..so really big thanks to them.

Room Tip: above i gave a mark to the first room they gave us and where we lived 4 days out of 11. be sure what...

Thank you for your comment about your stay with us. A shame you made this experience and did not enjoy your holiday 100%. We are glad that you talked to our manager and that you did change the room. The hotel offers different room categories. The best double room categroy would be a double room pool side superior, these are the refurbished rooms. If we know that our guests prefer a double bed, we do push two single beds together, but we can put an extra mattress on top so that it seems a double bed. So do not hesitate to contact us, we always try to solve the problems of our guests.

Kind regards.
