“Very Average”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2012

We stayed here for a couple of nights in Jan 2012. Overall the place isn't too bad, rooms are a good size, and has all the usual facilities. We stayed in the top rooms, quite a climb up the stairs but you do get a great view of the lake and there were tables and chairs to sit outside on.

A few issues to highlight. Its at the far end of the strip running alongside the lake, nice for the walk but a little distance from the main centre. The water wasn't warm all the time and we were charged rs200 per night for electric heater as it was pretty cold. Also beware the tipping, it was the only place i stayed where the staff wanted tipping for everything. Obviously i'm happy to tip for certain things but by the end it got a bit too much, when we left we had 5 staff all asking for tips of each of us individually and they didn't let up. All we needed was a little help with a couple of bags, most of the guys just stood there doing nothing but still demanded tips. Left feeling like they just trying to extract as much cash from us as possible before leaving.

I'd go to another hotel if I were to visit again in the future

Room Tip: If you are going to risk staying here take the top rooms for the view, and beware everyone wanting t...

First the good points :
1. Very close to Nainital bus stop.
2. At Rs 1800/- all inclusive the rooms are quite big and spacious for a family.
3. Friendly room service.
4. Excellent bed tea !
5. Very close to the Naini lake ( in fact its just bang opposite ).
6. Huge verandah and open space outside the room to just stroll around or sit .

Now the few minus points :
1. Food's too expensive. We didnt even try.
2. You get hot water in your taps only from 8 am to 10 am ( they'll tell you its till 12 noon ).
3. Room heater will cost you extra ( but you can always bargain it into the room charge like we did ).
4. This hotel's quite far from the mall ( about 2 kms walk ).
5. Old and worn out room furniture.

We visited Nainital in June 2010 for a 2 day trip. Stayed in Evelyn hotel. Located just opposite the lake, it offers great view from the balcony. The rooms are cosy and pack into a nest in chilly weather ! Their walkways having sofa & chair sitting offer unique experience in the sun. The food is good and staff is very sincere.

Date: July 2008

I stayed in the hotel for 3 days, It was more than satisfactory stay in this hotel. Location is very good. View is really good from the top.

It is very quite and that really helped me to relax.

Food is not that good, I had my food in near by restaurant (there are plenty of them on the mall).

Room service is slow but staff is good that compensates.

Would definitely recommend this Hotel.

This hotel is located at one of the best places in nainital as it has the most romantic view of the Naini lake. More the rooms though being average are comfortable and most beautiful is the Roof-Top restaurant.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel Evelyn is among one of the oldest hotels in Nainital and has a rich history of hospitality. It has been serving guests even before the town became a retreat for city-weary souls and saw a burgeoning hotel industry. Before 1947, Mrs Page, a British lady ran a guesthouse of the same name, where the hotel stands today. Since Indian Independence, it has been owned and run by Mr S.L Sah's family. It was his will power and dynamism that metamorphosed a small guesthouse into a 60-room hotel.Today Hotel Evelyn offers the height of convenience and comfort to guests. From the Mall Road you can get a glimpse of the impressive facade of the hotel and as you explore further a visual treat awaits you. It has a magnificent view of the Naini lake, the weeping willows arched delicately over the resplendent waters and the Holy 'Pashan Devi' temple right across. The flower be-decked terrace will simply take your breath away. The hotel rooms are elegant and equipped with modern amenities to make your stay a memorable one.Choosing from a myriad of hotels in Nainital can be quite a task, but if you want to experience the old world chalet-like charm of wooden paneled walls coupled with the luxury of all modern amenities, then ours is the hotel that you need to head to. ... more   less
