I was looking get some quiet time off with my wife and two children when I happened across Bob’s Place in Nathuakhan. We booked directly with the owner who was exceedingly charming and very helpful in telling us how to get there and what to expect.

We spent a wonderful few days nestled high up in the hills, with a panoramic view of the Greater Himalayan range, which made this the perfect getaway for us. The beautiful Estate has lush fruit orchards, a newly renovated bungalow and dense oak and pine forest cover. The novelty of picking and eating fresh fruit directly from the tree was wonderful for the children.

In, and from the Estate, there is something for every nature lover. Quite repose, gentle rambles in nearby forests or through village hamlets and for the more adventurous there are some wonderful short trekking routs.

The rooms are very well maintained and have a beautiful old world charm. In spite of the seemingly rustic aura, all basic amenities like attached modern bathrooms are taken care of. A wood fire bukhari kept us warm and cozy. A group of great cooks, conjures up a variety of Indian, continental and Chinese meals that one would least expect in place like this. What makes Bob’s Place truly unique though is the personalized service and care, from the members of staff.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Bob’s Place as your next getaway. It exceeded all our expectations.

My wife and I stayed at Bob's Place over the last weekend and came away feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Bob's place is great for a short trip out of Delhi to unwind and regain some of the composure lost over a long work week. It was a bit of an arduous drive but well worth it once we reached.

Our room was clean, and had an amazing view over the valley - the clouds rolled in almost through the windows in the morning and it was a pleasure to sit and eat a delicious breakfast in the strong mountain sunlight.

One can see that this is not a hotel. There are personal touches of the owners all over the property that make you feel more like a guest at a friend's house than someone paying to stay in a hotel. This is great for me, since I do a lot of work related travelling and find the anonymity of most Hotels stressful.

As soon as we got in our car to drive to Delhi we looked at each other and promised we would be back soon!

I went this last weekend to Bobs Place. We had taken three rooms and checked in late afternoon.

We were the only guests who were staying there and that was great because we had complete privacy.

The view is super, the library in the lounge is well stocked. There are plenty of trees and vegetation giving the place a very green feel.

When we were ordering the dinner in the evening we noticed that the staff seemed to be working under the influence - they were reeking of alcohol, slurring and speaking to us loudly.

Anyhow - we ignored their behavior and proceeded with the dinner.

After dinner the staff was talking loudly and seemed to be partying till late into the night. So much so that we could not sleep and we had to request for a change in rooms so as to be away from the racket.

I am unlikely to stay there again.

We were absolutely taken aback and rather concerned by the guest's comments. Our resort has been in operation for the last five years with the same staff members and up until now we have never had a complaint of this nature from anyone of the innumerable guests at Bob's Place.
We spoke to the guest who wrote the complaint and ascertained that there was, in fact, no deficiency in service or inappropriate behaviour by any member of the staff. As the rooms occupied by the guests were close to the kitchen, there may have been some noise during the winding up for the night. We apologise for this. However no request was made for change of rooms and the guests continued to occupy the same rooms.

read about the hotel as top 100 destinations in india, and great reviews and also herad from a friend , good words about it, still we r not the fussy kinds and did not expecting much, but we were definetly dissapointed, especially with the service . can be blamed on may be abscence of bob uncle from the property and abscence of any professional senior manager.
we were refused many a times for a lot of things
we checked in late at 4:30 PM got caught in nainital jam, they couldnt serve us lunch, despite calling at 2:00 PM and asking tehm to keep lunch for us we talked to Mr Shanker and he said that they will keep lunch and himself agreed that it may take 2-3 hrs to reach his place. but thats ok still understandable
the food especially indian was very ordinary and we did hear others also complaining, when we asked them to make non spicy , it was like a revenge food without tomatoes and salt like we have during fasts.
then came the breakfast , we were told they do not serve both eggs and parathas together or parathas and puri aloo together. it was evident it was all made up and they had no rules to follow.
the non veg dishes were good but of 5 of us only 2 were non veg takers.
the continental was much better cooked but again one dish of beans was pretty ordinary
also on day 2 , we were refused that continenatal cannot be made as the number of guests in more.
on the last day at bfast they had no bread/toast and it was a good 15-20 mins before we got it fresh from the market
the location and decor of room is great the views and balcony is worth amazing , but wish the service was better.
staff is no doubt polite, but maybe got a bit lazy at the end of the season

Bob's place is a cottage style 'HOMETEL' as Bob, the affable proprietor aptly describes it. It is tucked away in the lap of the Uttarakhand mountains, in the village of Nathuakhan, 40 kms from Bhimtal via Bhowali in Uttarakhand. Bob's place has 7 spacious cottages, each unique in it's own way, in the midst of lush green plum and peach orchards. As you enter, you will realize that the entire property has been cut out in the mountains with the cottages built on different levels. Since Bob's Place has been built with the least commercial intentions, each cottage has a very homely feel and clearly reflects the care, love and passion with which Bob has made it. The architecture was completely taken care of by Bob, while the interiors were done by his wife, Poonam.

I visited Bob's Place with my joint family in a group of 9 - my parents, grandparents, uncle & aunt along with their two kids and myself. The idea of the vacation was simply to rejuvenate ourselves, go on treks, relax and getaway from the scorching sun and hustle bustle of Delhi. Initially we had decided to stay there for 3 nights which we later on extended to an an entire week on no prior notice. We had 3 cottages to ourselves for the entire duration of our stay. If you plan on getting two rooms, ask Bob if the two with the adjoining sit out area are available.

Coming down to the food and staff -

There is a 'cute' dining place right next to the entrance where all meals are served in a buffet style. The food is completely home cooked and void of excessive masalas and oil. The staff is very efficient and extremely accommodating in terms of what you want to eat and what you don't. The dining room has a small fruit basket which is replete with fresh handpicked plums and apricots at all times. My cousins, who are four and ten years old respectively, loved the food - not to mention they walked down to the kitchen themselves and got whatever they want - right from Maggi to chicken curry. To put it simply, if they have the stuff to make what you want, they will make it.

What to do at Bob's Place -

Go for treks through the forest. Ask Bob if he can line up Mr. Bacchi Singh to take your for the trek. Even if not, the entire trail has been marked well so you will never get lost. Besides, you can sit out in the open, on the hammock, and read a book or simply take in the beauty and amazing weather. If you like meeting people, meet Bob and Poonam, if they are there around - they are amazing people and great fun to talk to. There is also a lounge with a fully functional TV + DVD Player and DishTV - my grandma made full use of it. Oh and yes, ask Bob if he can arrange a lunch for you at Garden Valley, Niglat - two hours drive from Bob's Place. Have continental over there - it's an experience you will never forget. We also travelled to Lake Resort, Naukuchiatal, which is again around 2 hours from Bob's Place. Good place to go boating with your children and enjoy a not-so-special afternoon lunch.

Lastly but by no stretch of imagination the least, if you are a dog lover - you just hit the jackpot! Bob has the most adorable and friendly dog in the world called Sarge (from Sergeant Major) - a thoroughbred German Shepherd. Once you can stop getting intimidated by his size, you will not want to leave him behind.

The Verdict -

On the whole, we had an exceptional vacation thanks to Bob's Place, one to remember for years to come; made new family friends namely Bob, Poonam and Sarge and beat the Delhi heat in the best possible way we could fathom. No prizes for guessing, we will definitely return in the future.
