“Not open that often!”

Haras National de Saint-Lo
Reviewed 6 April 2018

Turned up to find the place was not officially open, however, we boldly strolled through a side gate and explored to our hearts content. The place is laid out in an oval shape with for large buildings housing litterally hundreds of horse boxes. Many of the stalls are occupied by a variety of horse breeds from French draft horses to Arab mares.
Check the opening times before turning up!

Take the guided tour for the most benefit, the guides do speak English! The buildings are spectacular, and those bombed in WW2 were rebuilt as an exact reproduction. The horses are huge and beautiful and incredibly well-cared-for. The guide's description of the "car wash" for horses was funny as was his explanation of the artificial insemination procedure with the artificial mare! There is a million euro horse (with stud fees accordingly!) and some rare breeds. You can tell from this review that I am the non-horsey person, my wife is the horsey one, but I really, really enjoyed it! The static display of carriages and uniforms completed the picture.

If you like horses then this is a must-visit place. You can look around the visitor centre free of charge and see old carriages, tack and equine paraphernalia, but the hour-long guided tour (for just 6 euros) is great value. The buildings are historic and still all used for their original purposes. The guided tours are in French and broken, but ever-so-friendly, English and it's all very unhurried, charming and laid back. Really....do not miss this!
