Seriously, the expensive places are popular targets anyway, and for the price you can't beat the service, with airport pick up and drop off, breakfast and dinner. I was put in a huge room which was comfortable enough. The bathrooms are shared but that was never an issue. Breakfast was OK, and dinner wasn't bad either, especially the first night when we had this tasty chicken dish. It gives you a chance to speak with the other guests as well.
I'm a 47-year old short Caucasian, and I think I was the only tourist in the country unfortunately. But I walked around the neighbourhood alone, made it to the Bagh-e Babur gardens on my own, walked out to the zoo and explored the immediate surrounding area and I felt fine. I also was offered tea by several people (which I should have taken, the tea turned out to be very good I later discovered).
They can arrange excursions which I found to be a bit on the pricey side, but since everything else is a steal and the money goes to a good cause it wasn't a problem. I went to Massoud's tomb, about 3 hours north of Kabul, for $250. It was really amazing, and the scenery was incredible--I am so glad that I did it since who knows when I'll make it back to Kabul!
Most importantly, I felt perfectly safe.More
