“pretensions of excellence in the best scam in town”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2013

I will first get the good things out of the way, few as they are. firstly, the ambience. great environment. very nice interiors. and because it looks posh, you can happily go on dates as you will not be eating or drinking much. but if you're going to get a bite to eat or a bit of coffee, avoid it like the plague.
I will not deny that the place looks good. but that is where it all stops. the seats are uncomfortable. seriously so if you are anywhere near 6 feet. and the menu is very extensive but the items are uniformly lacking seasoning and flavor. and that is just the start. first time i went to this place, it had just opened. so i passed off all the failing as teething problems. the twist in the tale is that it didn't improve but went even further downhill.
first off the flavors. i have italian friends, and i have been to some of the best italian restaurants in the world and to italy. quite a bit of italian cuisine is light and fresh. but one thing it is not, is bland and inedible. that is what it is in the coffee shop. the calzone feels like a mouthful of something hot. you don't know what that hot stuff is. the pizzas have toppings but so little sauce that it feels like an afterthought. and all the pastries are insanely sweet and have a weird texture that makes them feel like sugary, super chewy goo.
the coffee and beverages are mostly water. with a few things added for color. for example, the oreo shake, one of the most expensive drinks they have sound great. but the actual thing is totally watery. some whipped cream on top. and the only oreo you get is two pieces of one biscuit arranged on top of the glass. all for a price of 120/- plus tax only. a more brazen scam will be rarely found. really, the McDonalds oreo shake thing is far cheaper and stuffed full of the biscuits and ice cream. just for comparison.
another great thing was that a few weeks after opening, the prices went up. but, the servings went down in size. and i don't know how this was possible, but the flavor too worsened. another example to illustrate. The beef burger initially had a large, 4 inch bun and a large patty. somewhat dry but still okay. Then the price shot up and the patty shrank in size to a vada pao sized one. such an awesome thing. your wallet and you both shrink in size.
i can go on and on but then it will just seem like a rant. so i will just conclude by saying that it is a good place to go if you want to show off or not come across as cheap. but in that process of showing off or saving face, you will surely come across as a chump who gets scammed.

“Best Cafe, must visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2013

It's not only a coffee shop but a very glamorous dining space with menu ranging from bakery to pizza, pasta, burgers and sandwiches. Hey have an excellent bakery, food is superb with imported ingredients and world class preparation methods. The servers are very well trained, mostly qualified. They have some of best wines including international wines.

This place may be slightly expensive than Bakers cafe but definitely beats all cares in Gangtok and is a must visit.

“By far the best in Gangtok!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2013

New place, owned and operated by a switched on Sikkimese Bhutia guy, right on the groovy end of the walking mall with wonderful personal table service and a wide range of eats and drinks including excellent pizza, burgers and cakes and pastries, great coffee, as well as Australian and Indian wine by the glass...seating by the almost el fresco terrace windows with a great view of the folks below as well as the one traffic lane still open opposite to check out the local cars and bikes plying downtown, makes for a pleasant and styling dining experience! The Coffee Shop easily beats the others of this genre in Gangtok and we highly recommend some time and money spent here!
