Had visited this place in March'14 and stayed 3 nights,4 days. We had two rooms, 1 super deluxe and 1 Portico Suite. In the beginning let me make it clear that had it been that I am rating it only for rooms, I would have given it 4 out of 5 possible. Had it been only food when ordered a' la carte, I would have again given a definite 4 out of 5 possible. But overall I cannot rate it more than 1.
Location :The hotel is located quite far from MG Marg and taxis charge Rs. 100 one way for going there.
Rooms : Though I requested rooms with view and actually was given room(102) with best possible view but truly speaking, there is nothing to view at all. All you can see is some dilapidated roof tops, garbage and a valley behind it which is forgettable. The room itself was good, decent in size, toilets clean and showers had continuous hot water. Bed comfortable, linens clean. Only the towels supplied looked worn out and not of premium quality. The room heater (blower type) breaks down frequently. I had to get it changed three times in 3 days. The electric kettle had no off switch(or not working properly). So while making your own tea, you have to stand beside it till the water boils and switch it off manually. Room service takes a awful lot of time to deliver. We ordered soup and it was served half an hour later and without condiments. You have to again ask for it. By the time it is delivered to your room, your soup turns cold. Serving french fries, peanut masala took 40 mins. Ordered boneless chilly chicken, served with bone. When told about it, they denied. Now the most damning part, they only serve you with 1(one) bottle of mineral water the day you check in. For the subsequent days they serve plain water in such a way that you will think that they have given you a fresh mineral water bottle and they don't tell it beforehand when you are checking in. Unless you are aware you might end up drinking tap water. How did I know about it? They have stock of SPARKLE brand mineral water which they served me the day I checked in. The next day(day 2) when we came back from our day trip, we saw they have cleaned the room and had given a new (presumably) bottle of water same SPARKLE brand. I didn't get the chance to verify the seal since my daughter had by that time opened the bottle to drink from it and I didn't even had a doubt that they would serve tap water. Since I had seen that they give only 1 bottle, I had brought with me 2 bottles of BISLERI brand mineral water which I had purchased during my day sight seeing trip.
On day three before going out for sight seeing, we had finished 1 bottle of BISLERI and disposed the empty bottle in the waste bin provided in the room. Both myself and my elder sister staying in room 104 was having an upset stomach from day 3 afternoon. When we returned in the afternoon we saw our room was cleaned and then suddenly the bottle of water provided came to my notice. To my surprise, I saw this time the bottle provided was BISLERI brand. I doubted and checked the seal. It was broken. The buggers has taken the empty bottle which I had dumped in the waste bin in the morning and simply refilled it with tap water. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT ACCEPTABLE. I was furious and spoke to house keeping and when I inquired why the seal is broken then they told us that they don't supply mineral water and it was water from AQUAGUARD. When I asked why it was not informed before, they simply told that they had forgotten and it is hotel policy to give mineral water for the first day only. This is cheating and I could understand the reasons for my upset stomach. I have travelled in many places in India and abroad but never found cheating of this nature. Paying Rs. 5000 per day, you don't expect this sort of low level stuff. Even budget accommodation don't do this and this by no way is a budget accommodation. I wonder how it is rated so highly in Trip Advisor.
Breakfast : The breakfast was complimentary with the room and the lesser said about is better. Never before I had breakfast as bad as this hotel served. Fruits same every day, papaya raw which you can't eat, only the watermelon was edible. Other than bread and butter/jam and the tea everything else was horrible. Had idly one morning. It was so hard that if thrown it will definitely injure someone. Took one bite and thrown it. Sambar too salty, Chutney - no taste. One morning there was puri which was like fried papads only the sabji with it was edible. Most funny was on day one I had ordered for poached egg with sunny side up, when it was served, it was way too oily but made of with two eggs(standard norm). Next morning when I again asked for the same but requested to make it less oily or preferably water poach, they replied that they don't know how to do a water poach and when they again served me the oily one this time it was made with one egg. (Maybe same policy like water- day one with 2 eggs and subsequent days 1 egg). It was really surprising that how could they make such a horrible breakfast while if you order a la carte they really prepare good food. In case you stay in this hotel even after reading my review, book room only without breakfast. Moreover they charged me extra Rs. 1000 (without bed) for my child per day for this horrible breakfast.
Finally, they don't supply newspaper. When asked they said newspaper come late(understandable) since it comes from Siliguri. But at least you expect newspaper to reach by evening.
Conclusion :Avoid my all means. Pay some extra bucks and stay in Mayfair resort or Denzong Regency. In case you are in a budget, there are lot many decent cheap places to stay near MG Marg.
