“Only Club Mahindra In The North East”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2010

This is the only Club Mahindra Resort in the North East part of our country, and is able to face up to the challenge of presenting the unique culture of that area to visitors.
The hotel is located at a village called Changey, around 12 Kilometers away from the town of Gangtok. There are only two sign boards on the way, and the distance mentioned in them is inaccurate. More are needed since the road to the resort is bad, and there are many turns where we are forced to stop and ask the way.
The resort is nestled on a small rising, and is built in various layers, with the reception at the lowest level. Once in the resort, the fatigue of the journey is quickly forgotten given the beautiful surroundings and the grand welcome by the hotel staff. As with all Club Mahindra resorts, the rooms are spacious, with a lovely view from the windows or balconies. There are few rooms only so it is better to book early to get confirmed accommodation.
There is only one restaurant, which offers both buffet and a-la-carte. It is better to opt for the buffet itself, since there is lot of variety on offer, with at least one local dish each time.
If one has got a vehicle at one's disposal, there is no problem in getting to the town whenever we want. For others the resort has a paid car shuttle at fixed hours. This is convenient and reasonably priced, with the only problem being that only 4 persons can be accommodated at a time.
The best time to visit this area is after the rains and before the onset of winter, or during April - May. It can rain at any time, and then the temperature drops quite a bit, so if we are travelling with children, it is better to be prepared at all times.
There are many places to visit nearby. Local sightseeing takes a day, and a visit to NATHU-LA pass and CHANGU lake takes another full day. Permits are needed for this trip, so plan in advance. Nathu-la pass is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The town is shut on Tuesdays.
There is an activity team which arranges for various activities in the evenings. There are cultural events also and it is real fun.
All said and done, the hotel is real value for money.

As is wont with every Mahindra resort, the Royal Demazong is also located out of the main town, in this case 10 kilometers away. The village is called Changey and the road to the resort is so bad, that you begin to wonder whether we are on the right track. The Mahindra sign boards are very few and the distance mentioned is incorrect. However, all our apprehension melts away when we finally reach the resort.
It is perched on top of a small hillock and is built in various layers, with the reception at the lowest level. The rooms are spacious enough for a large family, and the view from all the windows is fantastic. There are 30 odd rooms, so booking early will be a good way to avoid disappointment.
There is only one restaurant, but the cuisine is varied and excellent, so one does not mind. Every day there was at least one local dish to tantalize the palate.
It can rain at any time in Gangtok so the resort has thoughtfully arranged for umbrellas in every room.
Since it is at some distance from the main town, there is a taxi shuttle from the resort to the town at intervals of two hours. This costs Rs 165.00 per trip and is reasonable. The only problem is that there is only one car, and this takes only 4 persons, so if you are in a larger group, you will have to make your own arrangements.
The travel desk is not very proactive, so it is a better option to make your taxi and local tour arrangements through some travel agency, the best being the Government owned Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation. Local sightseeing takes a day, and a visit to NATHU-LA pass and CHANGU lake takes another full day. Permits are needed for this trip, so plan in advance. Nathu-la pass is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The town is shut on Tuesdays.
The best time to visit is after the rains and before the onset of winter, or during April - May.

We are members of club Mahindra and had booked our holiday thru' them. We thought that about 6-7 kms from Gangtok was not that far, but the roads were so bad that it took us half an hour to reach there from Gangtok. This place is only for people with good backs and able to take the really rough roads which we were not prepared for. It took us 5 1/2 hours to reach the resort from Bagdogra the nearest airport.
Though the resort was nice Sikkim is for people who are willing to take the rough terrain and be able to rough it out. To go anywhere from the resort would mean to go to Gangtok and go from there.

Friends had warned that monsoon was the wrong season for Gangtok. True to their word, the roads were slushy, pot-holed and risky for haste. In our onward journey, the rain slashed the windshield with such fury as if we were not welcome to Sikkim. Against this background when we reached Royal Demazong, our experience was of extreme hospitality, it was akin to that of sunshine in the rain.

Royal Demazong is manned by genuinely and pleasantly polite staff, without the usual professional put ons that you find in most upmarket hotels. Devoid of any inhibitions or 'not my work' syndrome, they are dependable with basic honesty and straight-forwardness. Well appointed and beautifully decorated, this classic property blends well with the tranquil beauty of the valley. The view from the balcony of the room was breath taking, with clouds sailing over the mountain peaks at a lazy pace on its journey over the boarder to Tibet, now in China. It was cool, without chill. At Royal Demazong, when it rains, the rain drops fall over the awning, drum-beating rhythmically making a rain-song of unique harmony.

Tip: Monsoon season is cool and not cold in Sikkim. If you are visiting for a break from the chaos of a city for attaining some peace, monsoon in Royal Demazong has no parallel. If your focus is on outdoor activity, avoid monsoon.

Every time you wish to visit the town, its quite a distance and you need to hire a cab which works out to be Rs.250 for a drop.

The food is served plenty and is affordable. Quality is good and taste is excellent.

Nights are silent and pitch dark, ensuring deep sleep.

Despite the rains, the house keeping and room-service is attentive and prompt.

On the whole, a good place to stay and rejuvenate.

We went to this hotel as part of club mahindra membership vacation. The hotel is about 7 kms from actual Gangtok town. The way is also steep and a bit rustic. But once you reach the place you can be sure that you have reached a slice of heaven on earth.

The hotel is a 3 star accommodation. The interiors are done in Sikkimese style, which has been influenced by China and Tibet to quite an extent. Bold colors, ethnic art and a quite calmness, all hit you right where it matters as soon as you enter the reception.

The staff is very polite, always smiling and helpful. They are surreptitiously attentive to the customer's needs.

The dining room/restaurant is tastefully designed and offers excellent buffets for breakfast and lunch. Dinner is a la carte. Each day a Sikkimese variety is served, along with regular dishes such as potato curry, boiled eggs etc., They also have a live egg counter for o the spot fresh healthy breakfast. Sufficient vegetarian dishes are served with a couple of non-vegetarian dishes during lunch.

The house keeping is meticulous and keeps the room fresh and clean at all times. The room service, however, is very limited. Also, since there are no fans in the rooms it tends to get a little warm inside the room during the day. But the view of the majestic mountains definitely make up for any such small inconveniences.

The only con with the hotel is that it has rooms in two floors with no lift facility. The altitude makes climbing a bit hard on a person. Also, the hotel is a bit far from the actual town and it costs about 200/- for a one-way trip into the town. But the hotel provides a cab if need be.
