“Gorgeous”
Reviewed 11 February 2011

A group of us took over Patricia's for a few days of yoga and Pondy living : the family's welcome and hospitality couldn't have been warmer. The guesthouse is gorgeous, the rooms beautifully maintained (especially the "romantic" suite with its swing...) and the terrace a dream for those early morning yoga sessions and evening chillout moments. perfectly located too. A huge thank you to Patricia and Olivier for everything you did for us (and apologies to Olivier for all those questions...) - will definitely be going back.

Patricia has a very sunny disposition, and her lovely old house reflects that entirely. It is a three-floored house with loads of character. It has seen its share of additions and alterations over its many years of existence, but everything fits in quite harmoniously. The high quality period furniture and art are delightful. Patricia and her efficient helpers keep the house spotlessly clean and very comfortable.

Breakfast is on the house. The spread is very limited, but of good quality, and is neatly served.

The decorator's touch at Patricia's is not to be beat - the co-ordinating textiles, beads and knick-knacks makes for a visually lovely stay. Rooms in this colonial corner property have high ceilings, heavy wood furniture and clean bathrooms. The bed was fairly hard and lumpy, though, so even with the fancy mosquito net draped romantically over it, a night's rest was not what it could have been. There is a T.V. in the common living room, but we felt awkward watching it, as the elderly doorman and his partner were watching it in the evenings - we didn't want to intrude. For 2000 rupees, which is a lot of money in India, you might think a light breakfast was included, but it was not. Patricia would not negotiate a breakfast inclusion for us, pleasant as she was. So, even though it was a great looking place, we moved on down the road after a couple of nights.

Patricia and her family run two guest houses in Pondicherry. The first is Patricia Colonial Heritage Guesthouse. The second, smaller property, is just around the corner and is called Patricia Guest House III. Both are expertly run by energetic, friendly and vivacious Patricia and her sons.

My wife and I spent three nights at the latter guest house and were enchanted. In this world of five, six and seven star international hotels, luxury can be easily found. What is much more elusive, however, are opportunities to stay in places which have real character, which are linked to the identity and history of the place you are visiting. In both of these guesthouses, the family is passionate about preserving French architectural and colonial history and showcasing Tamil and Hindu culture.

Both houses are veritable Hindu/Tamil art galleries--every room features colorful, eclectic and beautiful sculptures, bronzes, tapestries and all manner of antique furniture. My wife and I are definitely not "B&B" types and we typically feel a bit clausterphopic in most B&Bs we've been to (dusty, overstuffed and kitchy, etc). But not here--Patricia's style is enchanting and beautiful.

Each of the rooms are comfortable and thoughtfully decorated, but the very best room is the top-floor suite (approx. 4,000 Rp/night high season) with a large balcony, amazing teak windows and shutters and a charming and comfortable seating area and hanging wooden hammock. Wow!

The final reason to stay is the incredible attention and assistance provided by Patricia, her staff and the day manager Munar. They went above and beyond, helping us to plan our complicated itinerary across India. They made calls on our behalf, provided contacts for us in various towns and were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful with their suggestions. We felt positively spoiled!

Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did. One note of advice--book ahead! Here's the website for the main guesthouse--call them directly for availability at the other guest house:
