“spooky and damp”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2009

This hotel looked great online and travellers' reviews were appealing. However, when we arrived the prices were a lot higher than advertised and the only room available for a reasonable price was very small and had a funny small about it. But having travelled in India for 4 weeks before, we could manage that, we thought.
At night someone tried to open our door twice (the room across the reception of the ground floor) and we heard scratching noises. When we went outside the room, there was no one to be seen, the guy behind the reception said he saw nobody.. Spooky.
And then, the damp. The walls were wet, drops of water were dripping off the walls and the window. The small became even worse with the AC turned on, so we switched it off. After one hot ,damp and somewhat spooky night we decided to move. The receptionist tried to give us a hard time but with my partner's asthma it was for health reasons alone not good to stay here.
Don't go here, there are many other great boutique hotels at the same rate!!!!

We wanted a relaxed break, away from the madness and thus chose sleepy Pondicherry and decided to stay at a lovely French style villa called Hotel De Pondicherry. Located right in the heart of French Pondicherry, Hotel De Pondicherry is walking distance from most sightseeing places in Pondicherry - the promenade, good restaurants, the ashram etc.
The highlight of the hotel, which has a limited number of rooms, is the French style interiors of the rooms. Though the room we stayed in was quite small, it was furnished with beautiful antique furniture and painted in bright hues. We happily spent most of the day time being indoors and reading up in the comfort of the air-conditioned cozy room.
The staff is friendly and responsive.
Overall, a nice and quiet hotel which we would love to visit again and again.

Quite frankly this is no longer the boutique hotel it advertises on the website, but more of a guest house and well over-priced for what it offers. But having paid fully up front to their booking agent, we had no choice but to stay. On arrival the rooms were musty, damps spots & paint peeling off the walls.. and then they informed us that they had no fridge or cooking facilities so could not offer any cold drinks, ice or morning tea!! We had to walk 20 mins the following morning to find a coffee shop which was open. The restaurant at the front courtyard seems to have fallen out with the 'hotel' so no co-operation there. On the top two floors there was a disco club which thankfully was closed 'for renovation' - when this reopens I imagine the rooms may be very noisy.
All in all, it is very run down & poorly managed eg holes in the towels, grainy tv, noisy a/c, no shower curtain so bathroom flooded, etc etc. And the beds were very hard. We really wished we'd opted for the Neemrana Hotel de L'Orient just round the corner - it was only Rs200 ($4) more expensive and a world apart in terms of quality and facilities. Lovely courtyard restaurant, WiFi etc etc.
In fairness when we finally got through to the hotel owner by phone, he did offer to refund us if we wanted to move but by then our driver had gone off and it was too late. He then said he would give us a rebate but was unable to give cash so he gave us a letter authorising the agent to refund 50% of the room rate. A generous offer and hopefully we'll get it - our friends in India will follow this up so let's see. Maybe also the owner will now make an effort to spend some money and put some of the problems right.
There are now quite a few heritage hotels in Pondi at different price levels so would strongly recommend you avoid this hotel until it gets a make-over. There are also a few sea facing guest houses and hotels with balconies on the promenade which looked nice.

Beautifully restored colonial heritage hotel. I thought it was a little pricey for India but it was in line with the other heritage hotels in the city. I only booked with a days notice because I was keeping my trip flexible but I was lucky it was low season, it is more advisable to book ahead in Pondi to get the hotel you want.
The manager had perfect English and was very helpful and all the staff were pleasant. Only negative point was the AC which was very loud and there didn't seem to be an option to have just the ceiling fan without the AC on. Didn't eat at the restaurant, which is supposed to be good, mainly because of the cheesy music, unless your into music circa 1980s - think Bangles Eternal Flame!?!

I stayed one night at the Hotel de Pondicherry, a pleasant small hotel in an old French Quarter building that also houses a fine restaurant in its courtyard. My standard room was clean, with 24 hr. hot water, A/C and TV. Booked through Travel Guru, the cost was US$57.43 including taxes. The hotel is just one block from the ocean. I had one of my best meals in India in the hotel restaurant. Highly recommended.
