The Aardhaar guest house is owned by Ilyas and Arifa, the same lovely people who own the well-reviewed Swades guest house, and true to form they have put enormous effort into creating a comfortable and attractive place to stay. Stylish touches and attention to detail are everywhere, and Ilyas proudly showed me his innovations when I arrived. Some of these include: lovely stained glass detailing in the light, spacious and cheerful rooms, attractive and solid furniture throughout, netting on the windows, rooms with open balconies looking out towards the sea or the neighbouring palmeraie, an open bathroom where you can perform your morning ablutions with the birds overhead and a view of the sea, (all the rooms have traditional closed bathrooms too,) a shared open roof terrace with kitchen, fans and optional AC, comfy beds with two sheets each! (usually in India only one is provided,) free wifi with multiple routers so that the whole building is covered, and modern and efficient electrics. Ilyas has even created extra windows simply so that you can use the private bathrooms whilst looking out over the view.
If there is a down side it is that the guest house is sited fifteen minutes walk from the town centre, but if you really don't want to walk, a rickshaw at tourist rate is only going to cost you 50rs, and frankly, for the views and the tranquility, (I woke to bird song every morning,) it is worth the small extra effort, and you will find the people of Pondy cheerful and happy to chat, especially if you speak French.
Rooms cost from 1200rs to 2000rs

I took a room in Aadhaar because most other places were full. But I ended up staying 11 days because it's comfortable, has the facilities I needed, and the owner is warm and inviting, making sure you have everything you need.

My original booking in Pondicherry fell through (I made it online via a different hotel's website form, only to arrive to be told that I shouldn't have used the web form because it never works. So why have it at all?), and I stayed a night in Coramandal Heritage Hotel. I was not impressed by the quality of the rooms or the facilities there.

Ilyas, the owner, was full at his original property, so he suggested this, his new guesthouse. It has ocean views (also views of the lighthouse, both are a little ways away, but they're still delightful to look at, especially from the roof and the shared kitchen & dining area!), a shared refrigerator, toaster and microwave, and wifi Internet access from the ground floor patio area. The location is a little bit away from the center of town, which is fantastic because at night it was quiet and peaceful. And you get ocean views!

The building is brand new, so concrete that may get stained eventually was spotless, sparklingly clean, and fresh. I had brand-new bathroom fixtures, great water pressure -- and my single fan room w/private bath was only 1000 rupees AND had its own balcony with ocean view! For India, 1000 rupees is a bit high for a budget traveler like me, but for Pondicherry, it's quite reasonable, especially with kitchen and wifi included.

If I had two complaints, it would be 1) that the shared kitchen area really needs an electric or gas burner, so I could cook more than just microwave foods. Still, though, that included soups, rice w/soy protein chunks, poached and hard-boiled eggs, mashed potatoes (with delicious Auroville cheese -- look for it at Nilgiris grocery store and buy it, it's fantastic!). Combined with the toaster and lots of fruit, I didn't have to eat at a restaurant once, which is good, because I think that's where I got my bad case of Delhi Belly.

And 2) the whole thing would have been an even better value and more comfortable if the wifi covered all the rooms and the shared roof area, so that you could use the Internet in your room or in the dining area. The ground floor patio worked, but it wasn't convenient, and in the evening the mosquitoes down there were ferocious in both quantity and quality.

Overall, though, it was wonderful to have such a nice, homey place to recover from my illness and to explore Pondicherry and the nearby beaches. I rented a bicycle and rode up to Repo and Serenity beaches north of town. It was an hour's ride, but well worth it!

The best thing about Aadhaar is the all the finishing touches. The numerous beautiful decor items -- wall hangings, paintings, sculpture, pottery -- make this seem more like home and less like a hotel.

Thank you, Ilyas. I can't wait to come back!
