“Toogood To Be True?”
Reviewed 31 July 2011

We stopped into this picturesque winery late in the day (5PM) on our way to Plymouth for one final "taste"!

Our experience was quite unique. Entering this wine cave from the scenic foothill, oak treed, 49er countryside was like transitioning to a different world. The 58 degree interior corridor flanked with wines aging in their barrels led to the "underground" tasting room. There you will find very personable servers, contemporary artwork and possibly some catchy but offbeat music playing in the background. There is an eclectic (mixture depends on mood of chef) dispenser of Sangria for a refresher from the exterior temps.

We then tasted the wines which for $5 includes a glass to take with you. After completing the tasting list our server grabbed his wine thief and took us through the cave offering samples of 4 additional wines directly from the barrel. We then returned and finished our tasting with some excellent ports. Hopefully they are Toogood To Be True because after a marathon tasting adventure, possibly influencing the discretionary checkbook, we purchased a "premium" priced 375ml bottle!

Give it a go! Toogood is actually the owner's name from England. Do not miss the very funny pictorial album with comments about the construction of the "cave".

“Best wines in the area”
Reviewed 20 October 2008

I can't claim to have visited every winery in the area, but of the dozen or two that I have been to, Toogood definitely has my favorite wines.

They charge for tasting, but you get to keep the glass (and it is a nice large red wine glass too), sample nine wines, and have the opportunity to sample a couple of wines that are still in the barrel, and which may not be bottled for a year or so.

The wines are excellent, the caves impressive, ask to see the photo record of their construction, and the people are knowledgeable and friendly.

“Awesome WIne Caves”
Reviewed 12 September 2008

Another great Winery, this one in Fair Play. Fair Play is in El Dorado County and is an excellent area for wine tasting. It's off the beaten path and not easy to get to, but once you are there, it's a great find. The Toogood Wine Caves are awesome and the wines are top notch. My favorite is the Foreplay 5. This wine is a Bordeaux Blend and has it all. Give it a try and be sure to visit Toogood if you are in the Fair Play area.
