Description: Situated in the centre of historic Sawbridgeworth, Goose Fat and Garlic offers something for every palate and every occasion. A range of menus caters for everyone from the casual diner looking for a quick lunchtime sandwich, to a business meeting over an a la carte dinner. A set price a la carte menu during the week offers a great dining experience at a very reasonable price, and an authentic tapas menu is a great causal eating option - ideal for groups. The bar attached to the restaurant provides the perfect meeting place for those just wanting a drink, or for pre and post- meal gatherings, and is known for its great cocktails and extensive wine and beer choices. The ambiance is smart but relaxed.

We have eaten here many times, (maybe two ro three times a year) going back to its incarnation when it replaced a restaurant called 'The Shoes' It is a few minutes walk from a close relative, whom we travel down from the WIrral to visit. I have also reviewed several times and always with a 4 or 5 star rating. It was one of our favourites. Ala, sinc eour last visit in March, the menu has been ruined by turning a large part of it into a Tapas menu. Whilst they have a few standard dishes, as 'Mains' one presumably has to choose a 'Tapas' dish as a starter. Gone has the ever changing interesting choices of maybe 8 starters and 8 mains. It was tempting just to leave. We had Ham croquettes to start , these were bland and tasteless, didnt even contain much ham ! The chicken escalope was just about OK, and the dessert billed as Creme Catalena, was just a Creme Brulee with a faint hint of orange flavour. This cooking was overall not a patch on what has gone before, both in quality and in its inventiveness. Have the owners changed or just the chef ? . Definitely
downmarket . I am rather saddened this had happened. It would be interesting to hear a response as to why they have done this

This came highly recommended so possibly our expectations were too high but having to send 2 meals back didn't help.
The Lamb was so rare that it was inedible and the paella was cold.
To be fair they did send out new meals but just be warned you may wish to ensure that the meat is cooked to your liking when ordering.
The other strange thing was the so called Pil Pil Prawns, I have been to many places in Spain and are usually there at least twice a year and this doesn't bear any resemblance to what you would get in ANY Spanish restaurant.
All in all it wasn't bad but was disappointing and let itself down
Honestly wouldn't rush to go back.

Myself and 6 other girls booked a table for a Friday night, we hadn't been for a few years but had heard great things and wanted to try the new Tapas Menu.
On arrival we had to wait quite a long time at the bar as we ordered cocktails but i appreciate these take time to make and the bar area was fairly busy.
We was shown our table and the waitress was very lovely and took our order, we each ordered 3 dishes from the tapas menu with some bread to start.
The food arrived at different times which was explained could happen but we hadn't received our bread, we was hungry so just assumed it had been forgotten and started on our tapas....
As it was Tapas and for sharing we was all enjoying trying out each others choice of dish, however that was short lived as one of the girls found a hair in her dish!, obviously its not ideal but as it was just of the dishes we pushed that to one side and didnt make a fuss but then .... another hair in another dish!
We asked one of the waitress to speak to the manager and again she was very polite and asked him to come and speak to us.
when the manager come over and we explained we had found not one but 2 hairs of course you would expect an apology...well not from this man!!
I have never in my life come across such a rude and obnoxious person, we was so shocked at his whole attitude.
Leaning over my friends chair he explained he has NEVER had a complaint about hairs in the food before and he would be willing to take 3 dishes off of the bill, but 3 dishes was one persons meal and there was now 4 of us not eating because we simply put off by our findings (others we still eating so of course we didn't expect all the food to be free).
However whilst he was standing over my friend arguing over what he would see fit as compensation he was interrupted by another of the girls showing him yet ANOTHER HAIR!, he was standing at the table within inches of her, she put the hair onto a napkin to show him and he claimed it was "a bit of pepper!" ... at this point the girls that had still been eating their dishes pushed them away and obviously refused to eat anymore!
There was no apology throughout the whole conversation, he very clearly intoxicated, he was so close we could smell it on his breath and he leaned over us.
When we mentioned trip adviser his response was "go ahead, fill your boots!" ... we outright refused to pay for our food and left just paying for our drinks!!

Off the cuff visit on a Friday evening, was quite busy but we did see a few empty tables but were more than happy to sit at the bar.
Ordered porn star martinis and tapas. The cocktails were not the best i have tried but were still drinkable if a bit too sweet.
The tapas was good and a nice selection, we didn't have to wait long for the dishes to arrive typically one at a time like a traditional Spanish restaurant.
Good atmosphere and staff were friendly, couldn't fault the place.

Beautifully prepared new tapas dishes. Had several dishes tonight. Highlights we're paella with monkfish (ordered it twice) for, truffled goat cheese and almonds, prawns and aioli and the Spanish cheeses.
Great crowd and ambience, lovely wines, and generally a top night out.
We're locals, so are spoilt to have it on our doorstep - but I'd travel to have a night like this.
Very special.
Thank you guys.
