“A beautiful little haven of peace and tranquillity”
Reviewed 15 December 2011 for a stay in August 2011

We stayed here last summer (2011) and had a lovely time. The apartments were lovely and in a fantastic setting. We stayed in the smallest (studio) cottage which was a good size and nice and traditionally furnished. It had a well equipped studio kitchenette, good shower and brilliantly comfy bed! The patio area outside it had the most fantastic views of the village and nearby sunflower fields.

After, a huge trawl of the internet we chose this farmhouse for a couple of main reasons. Firstly, I love to swim and most of the farmhouse apartments/cottages in Umbria don’t have very big pools and if they do, they are always crowded with lots of kids. This one was positively huge compared to many we’d seen – alright, 15x5 metres, but in the scheme of things that was a very good size and I was able to get a good quiet half mile swim twice a day. Although there were kids staying at the other cottages, they were all well mannered and although they enjoyed their time in the pool, we were still able to have a relaxing time (loungers/umbrellas provided free) and a good swim there ourselves.

The second reason for choosing Casa Delle Grazie was its location. We really struggled to find anywhere in Umbria from where we could walk to a local village or town, but we could from here yet still enjoy a brilliant country location. The farmhouse was a short 5-10 minute walk from the beautiful medieval hilltop village of Montone, through a steep wooded area (so take a torch) which you need to reasonably fit to tackle. We enjoyed the walk though and it was nice to find a place in Tuscany that was in the country but a short walk from local life. Montone is a gorgeous stone built hilltop village with beautiful views. Whilst we were there the ‘Donazione della Santa Spina’ week long festival was taking place and we enjoyed the events that came along with it including parades in traditional dress (the locals not us!) and the fantastic food stalls that the local families put on. However, other than that, the 5 or so restaurants in the village seemed to cater for those with more expensive/exclusive budget than ours and we were a little disappointed that there were no simpler café/bars that we could sit in and watch the village life, apart from one, which was small but did great ice cream and sorbet! If you are after tourist shops and bars this is not the place for you - the only thing other than restaurants (as far as we were aware) are a cash machine and a post office! Having said that, we really enjoyed the unspoiled location and I guess that the lack of these tourist type trappings are what makes it special. It was an easy drive to lots of other places such as the supermarkets at Umbertide, and the shops, restaurants and sights at Assisi, Perugia, Arezzo, Gubbio and Lake Trasimeno. We particularly liked the hilltop streets and restaurants in Gubbio which is not as well known as other local towns/cities, but is definitely worth a visit.

The views from the village and farmhouse (of the sunflower fields, village and local scenery) were all amazing and well worth the trip in itself. The farmhouses have been lovingly restored by the family who live there and are exceptionally well kept and clean. There was also a laundry room with airers and a small library of books to borrow. We were easily able to cook in our cottage (even though it was a studio), as unlike many studio apartments that claim to be self catering, it did have the space and utensils to allow this.

One thing to note is that this is an old building in farming country. It has been brilliantly restored and has all the mod cons you’ll need, but if you are bothered by the odd insect or being at one with nature when out and about, Umbria isn’t for you! We aren’t fussed by this and there were no beasties in the apartment if you keep the door shut, but you will find mini scorpion type insects, ants and mosquitoes around outside – so make sure you take insect repellent. I have to say that this didn’t affect our holiday at all though - just a note of caution to the faint at heart!

The thing that actually made our stay at Casa Delle Grazie, though, was the family who owned it; Aine, Fabio, James and Elisabetta and of course Rusty the dog! Aine is a bright and articulate Irish lady married to Fabio, a native Italian, who have 2 gorgeous children and a very cute dog. They couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful from the minute we arrived - in fact, even before this, as they were fantastic with sending information, directions and so forth. They were there to greet us, had provided all the essentials anyone would need in our apartment (wine, beer, bread, butter, olive oil, sugar, tea/coffee, cereal etc. along with a hairdryer, soft towels, candles and so on) and helped us out in anyway they could, be it directions to the shops, information about local life or recommending decent local wines! They shared a drink and interesting conversation with us on a couple of lovely evenings but also left us to it when we wanted quiet time ourselves. We couldn’t have asked for more friendly and welcoming hosts!

Overall, we could not have asked for a better place and more friendly people and it was a very peaceful stay which we would really recommend, especially for those working long hours like us who really require a relaxing break.
