“room location not good”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

stayed here from 15/3 for one week. Staff excellent. Food overall no complaints. Very clean and spacious throughout.
Our first room was located a good way from the main building and got little sun so therefore rathy chilly! I approached reception only to be told the hotel was full - totally untrue of course. The hotel was very quiet( which was lovely) but the receptionist had no intention of moving us to a sea facing room, even though I offered to pay!We were given another room on day 2 which was located nearer to the main facilities although still facing the mountains and received very little sun. However, we did enjoy our stay and if we return I will only book direct with hotel to ensure a sea facing room.

The hotel has one major fault, lack of staff within the bar and restaurant. The restaurant facility is far too small (they have condensed the Papagayo (sister hotel) restaurant facilty into one), therefore the hotel forces guests into two sitting system, 7-7.45pm & 9-9.45pm. If you have young children and their is no availabilty at 7pm you are forced to queue till the end of the 1st sitting in the hope they can find you a table. When they do there is not enough staff to clean up correctly & replenish food at the hotplates. The food is average at best, this is my 3rd trip to Spain in 3 years, previously being at 3* & 4* hotels, their service & quality of food was far superior. Use the hot plate at your peril, where 1 chef attempts to serve the entire sitting, the queues are long, the fresh meat can be dangerously undercooked & the guy is under so much pressure raw- semi cooked chicken & pork is turned with the same untensil to serve cooked. It is not uncommon to spend 20 minutes in a 10 man queue to get served to a drink at the evening, where 2 guys are left to serve the entire hotel, plus collect glasses etc. The facility itself stands up but thats where it ends. The food poolside is poor, burgers, hot dogs & chips. You cannot even get a cup of coffee in a proper cup throughout the day, even when you stay at the bar, which says it all. There were other issues, but there is little point in continuing further.

The hotel was really clean, rooms fantastic with a great shower and had a nice view of sea and pool.I would recommend to ask for a pool view as some rooms where facing car parks etc. Also ask for a double bed if you want one as we were given a twin.

We went at a busy time over easter there weren't always free sunbeds but thats the same everywhere you go,you have to get up early and get your towel on!Don't take pool towels as these are provided, save on your weight allowance!Pool was freezing but the kids there didn't seem to mind.

Drink quality, cocktails and the beer was great, you could have whatever you wanted.I found service in the sports bar good and the friendliest service of our stay, although my husband wanted to watch a big uk match and they weren't showing it so went to sports bar just outside hotel, not a problem and gave a small business some customers for the afternoon!

Breakfast fantastic. If you were a child you would be in heaven as there was chocolate milkshake, donuts and freshly made pancakes!Omlettes lovely and food selection great.

Lunch and dinner were a little bland I craved a bit of spice towards the end of the holiday but you could easily go out to a lovely restaurant lots to choose from.It was busy and had a few queues but i think there were 900 in the easter week we went so i think it all ran smoothly. We ate at the chinese and italian which were both fine. Many people were loving the food but we did find it a little boring but maybe we are just spoilt!

Service was fine in the hotel.

If you flying home in the early hours i noticed a few guests asked for carry out picnics which was a good idea to take on plane etc or for breakfast.

We didn't go with kids but the ones we saw seemed to enjoy the entertainment and the kids disco seemed v popular.

One previous guest described it a little like ground hog day and I do understand what he meant as every day is the same ....food etc but being an all inclusive hotel it will be like this unless you go out for dinner or lunch time.I didn't like that aspect of it but my husband did as he totally relaxed from the start and didn't have to think about anything.

Resort I found to be lovely and needed the nice long walk to let the breakfast go down!

Good value for money and would recommend especially for families with young kids.

My husband, 3 year old and I stayed at the gran Castillo hotel w/c 12th March. Having read some of the reviews we were slightly apprehensive however we had no issues with the hotel.

Staff were very friendly. One person who deserves a special mention was the chef in the restaurant unfortunately I've forgotten the mans name but he was the man cooking fish etc to order.my son instantly took to chef insisting we go and say hello to him before any meal, he remembered Ethan's name throughout our stay and was kind enough to give him a necklace with Africa on which made his day!

The room was very spacious and clean. There are only two complaints we had about the holiday one being the weather as it was very very windy (can't blame the hotel for that one !).the second one being the Chinese restaurant we were very unimpressed with the service and would suggest if visiting the hotel dont bother going in, we walked out before desert as the staff were v rude. On the other end of the spectrum was the Italian restaurant which was delightful!

All in all a lovely hotel which we will go back to and recommend to friends.

Reviewed 19 April 2012

We have just returned from a week at the Dream Gran Castillo and, apart from just one member of staff, found the hotel, overall to be excellent. Of course there are a few niggles, however, all in all, for the price you pay, it is great value for money.

In this day and age of computers, with all the forums you can look at, websites to browse and of course reading sites like Trip Advisor, surely everyone should research their hotels before booking in the first place. We sat in front of a man on the plane who proceeded to tell the person next to him that when he arrived at his hotel, he couldn’t stay there as it was dirty and awful, ‘certainly not 3 star, ‘ and had to check out and find somewhere else!! How did this happen, and why didn’t he do his homework!

My point being, before booking the Dream Grand Castillo I did my homework, I knew the two sister hotels had merged, and knew which side of the hotel I wanted to be at, I also knew that I wanted to upgrade to a Junior Suite with a sea view and double bed, and did this directly with the hotel, confirming with them again and again what I was actually getting (and of course probably being a big pain!!) However, this all paid off as we were in, what I can only describe, as the best room in the hotel.

Even upon walking towards our room, when we got to the end of the path we realised that the wooden stairs at the end of the path were leading up to just our room, we knew it was going to be special. As with any other normal Junior Suite we had a huge spacious room, with a separate sitting area, a walk in dressing room and a huge bathroom with large walk in corner shower (with jets also coming from all directions) double sinks, a walk in toilet cubicle with WC, bidet and phone, plus a large Jacuzzi bath. All this was fabulous, however, it wasn’t until we walked out on our massive terrace we realised how we had struck gold. We didn’t have anyone above, or at either side of us, the terrace extended out on it’s own, it was massive and I’m sure it’s the room that they photographed for the website. We had two lovely comfy, soft, padded wicker armchairs with a small table, a dining table and chairs and also two sunbeds. The view of the sea was to die for and we would lie at night listening to the waves – bliss!!

Restaurants - I had also read that the tables were nicer outside overlooking the pool area, so, when we arrived for dinner on the first night I requested that we have a table outside, this we were given no problem, relief – especially as you get to keep that table for dinner all week. All the waiters were very efficient and friendly, if you ordered a white wine, they would bring you the bottle, along with an ice bucket, and if you ordered red, then after pouring it, they would leave the bottle on the table – great as you didn’t always have to look around for someone to top you up all the time. Obviously it always helps if you leave a tip on your first night, hence ensuring the best service then on in!

The food was good enough, don’t like to Q really, however, if you timed it well enough you didn’t have to wait too long. Also, it goes without saying that if you get all your veg etc. then Q for your meat/fish etc. then of course your veg and potatoes etc. will get cold, get your meat etc. first, then go and get your veg as you don’t have to really Q for that – not rocket science. Also there is a microwave at the top left hand corner of the dining room, you could always blast your food in that before you took it back to you table if you like it nuclear. There was always plenty to choose from. The only thing I would say is that there could have been more staff behind the counters sometimes, I did notice that the lady who was carving the lamb one night, had to go and get refills of the potatoes, hence leaving people waiting for the lamb – not the end of the world, however someone carving/serving the meat and another looking after the veg would have made it a bit better. Also, at breakfast there is only one omelette lady, and only two pans of omelette’s on the go at any one time – there is ALWAYS a Q for omelettes as you can imagine, as each one takes about 3-4 mins. to make.

We booked the Italian one night as we had eaten in there a few times at lunchtime, and to be honest, was disappointed. It looked exactly the same as it did at lunchtimes, we did think that they would have made it look different at night, i.e. table cloths, candles etc., however, it didn’t feel different at all. There was not much choice either – the minestrone soup was awful – that was not minestrone – plus there was not anything from the other three or so choices of starter that we would have liked. We had the salmon main course and it was very, very good, I must say, however, it didn’t really feel like the occasion it should have been really.

Entertainment – unfortunately this was dire! However, we didn’t go to Vegas, but a holiday hotel in Lanzarote, so it was OK for us, we didn’t really expect anything better (however, I must say for a holiday hotel – the Barcelo in Fuerteventura was excellent – real professional shows with proper stages, lighting, costumes, sets etc.) anyway, I digress! Our daughter (age 7) loved the mini disco and hence for us it was good fun, and all the other parents sitting watching their off-spring enjoying themselves, also seemed to be having fun too. The only other show we saw, that wasn’t the entertainment team dressed up, miming to Grease, The Lion King and We Will Rock You, was the Motown Night – these were obviously professional singers brought in for the show so the standard was much better.

Getting a drink at the bar some nights, when there was only one person serving, was a bit of a nightmare, however, sometimes my hubby would just nip upstairs to the other bars up by reception and bring them down – no hassle really. One point though, if you are at the Papagayo side of the hotel (where the kiddies pools, slides and kids club are etc.) and not the Castillo side, then please bear in mind that there are no bars over at that side at night, so it would be quite a walk with drinks if you wanted to sit on your terrace/balcony whilst your children were sleeping. However, there is a small supermarket just out of the gate at that side and you do have a fridge in your room, so for all it would cost to put in a few beers and a bottle of wine that may be a better idea. We were lucky that we were at the Castillo side anyway and pretty close to everything (however it was a bit of a hike to the kids club each day!)

All in all the staff were wonderful – all apart from one – Thomas on Reception. I’m sorry, but when you are in the middle of dealing with customers, as he was with us while we were booking our table at the Italian, you do not pick up the phone and take a call, or if you do, you at least say “excuse me, do you mind if I take this call,” which of course we would have been fine with. But to answer the call and then book the people on the phone into the restaurant over us, was just rude! We had one more dealing with him on our last day, again, it didn’t go well – too long a story!!!

In brief the hotel is lovely, clean and spacious, the rooms (well our one anyway) was amazing, the food good and plentiful, drinks are good (even real bottles of Coke, Sprite, Fanta etc.) the service (apart from Thomas) was excellent and it was very good value for money.

Room Tip: Do your homework! We were at the Castillo side, which is further from the kids pools/kids club etc...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Like a grand castle which majestically dominates the seascape of the AtlanticOcean and its islands, the magnificent GRAN CASTILLO TAGORO is erected in the charming area of Playa Blanca, in the south of the volcanic isle par excellence: Lanzarote. With the conviction that elegance and comfort should come naturally, this Hotel is a tribute to 16th century Canary history and colonial architecture, inspired by the "Castle of San José" and the typical landscape of the island, blending in with the environment. The building is divided into different zones which maintain their colonial style, where the white facades and volcanic stone contrast with the backdrop of the deep blue ocean. A charming interior courtyard of Arab inspiration bathes the reception area with light, and the contemporary décor and pale colours create a warm and very elegant atmosphere. GRAN CASTILLO TAGORO pampers every detail of the rooms and suites, which have breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding scenery. They are decorated in a contemporary style, with marine touches, light-coloured wood and pale colours, creating a pleasant atmosphere full of light. The discerning selection of restaurants and cuisines serve Canary, national and international specialities. There are conference rooms featuring spearhead technology, and various outdoor zones for events of different kinds. The "Vitanova SPA" thalassotherapy centre provides the benefits of thermal seawater, and specific treatments for the body and soul.
