Villa Helidonia is a converted and updated 19th century house, located in Episkopi: a quiet and peaceful Cretan village, nestling up in the hills, some 20 minutes from Heraklion. The Villa has been tastefully furnished with antiques by its owner Dimitris, who also installed the amazing swimming pool. We spent many happy hours swimming and lounging by the pool, as well as exploring the delightful village and meeting the friendly locals. There is lots to see in the area and Villa Heladonia is the perfect base.

My previous review tells all you need to know about the Villa, but this year we spent more time in the village and really enjoyed the local Tavernas and the friendliness of the people. Greece is having a hard time at present but the resilience and welcoming attitude of the residents in this village was truly heart warming.

Dimitris remains a implacable host and it was a delight to be able to stay in his wonderful villa again.

If you are looking for a peaceful, traditional villa with an amazing pool and easy access to the area surrounding Heraklion you need look no further.

Room tip: There is no air conditioning, but the fans are really effective in the thick stone building, make sure you use them.

A week at Helidona was not enough. A beautiful place to stay in a proper Cretan village largely away from the tourist bustle, but close enough to visit any. The village is wonderfully friendly with enough in the way of shops, bars and small restaurants within walking distance to meet most peoples everyday need. Only 25 minutes’ drive from a beach or Heraklion. Demitris the owner is a delightful host and cannot do enough to be helpful and ensure your stay is perfect. A wonderful house with a fabulous pool and lots of delightful personalised fixtures and fittings, you just know you are staying in a home and not just a holiday villa. The driving in the narrow lanes in the village can be amusing, but we managed in a minibus, so don't let that put you off. A wonderful place to stay and highly recommended. We would love to stay again.

Villa helidona is situated near an old church in the middle of the village Episkopi a quiet and authentic place. The villa is a world inside a world. From the moment you enter there is absolute privacy and you feel at home. You can stay for days without feeling the need to go out, there are many "corners" in the house to sit and relax in them so you can move around different areas during the day. There is a beautiful front court yard facing the kitchen and a huge back yard with a wonderful huge swimming pool, with view to the mountains.
The house itself is beautifully arranged with antique furniture and special art works. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need. The house was clean organized and very well maintained. The owner was more than helpful for every request or question we had.
The village itself is small and populated with very nice and friendly people. It is quiet yet you can find there everything you need from supermarket to pharmacy to tavern.
It's a very special and unique house, yet also very comfortable, a chance to get a taste of the true and authentic "village life" in Greece and of course the swimming pool which was unforgettable. a very good value for money.
We enjoyed it a lot !

This villa offers some of the most beautiful architecture, antiques and experiences. The building itself is a real Greek (I should say Cretan) structure. Nothing faux about it. The old stone work, the wooden beams and tile floors combine to make the home an authentic work of art. Living about this structure, your senses are excited by the rare antiques that the owner willingly shares with you,

The village is part of the experience, filled with generous, friendly people who will often take time to sit and share a shot (or bottle) of Raki..Eggs by the dozen were given to us, along with many kind words and gestures. Living here you are not just one of a mass of tourists, but greeted as an individual who is worth getting to know.

The host, Dimitris, was most generous and did everything to make our stay a treasured memory.
