“Elegantly relaxing”
Reviewed 1 May 2012

The spa is calming and have many services from just soaking in the mineral pools to massages. However, the only way to get here is by auto/taxi. We did the couples massage and it was heavenly. My husband even fell asleep. Then we soaked in the pools, steamed and saunaed. Then we went to the 3rd floor for lunch. Outstanding! Mirko Michelotti, Restaurant Manager couldn't have done a better job at attending to our every need or question. You can even dine in the courtesy robes from the spa. No questions! The food was Tuscan themed & the choice of wines were from around the country. The rabbit stew was scrumptious! Even if you come into Livorno by ship, you can take a train to Pisa, grab a taxi & spend a good part of the day, before retracing your steps. Train is only 8 euro roundtrip & taxi was 30 euro. Good place to relax if you've been in this region before & don't want to see the usual attractions.

Room Tip: This is a hotel that is off the beaten track, but would suggest rooms @ the back facing the mountain...

We went to Tuscany for a short Easter break, and had short one day visits of Florence and Pisa, and Bagni di Pisa was ideally located for this purpose. I would recommend Bagni di Pisa to travellers who want a relaxing stay at the magnificent 18. century property in a small laid back town of San Giuliano Terme. After the incredibly crowded Florence, for us it was a very welcome change, to come and stay in this peaceful and beautiful palace. We had a very warm welcome at reception and the staff is very attentive and kind. We were provided with a Spa kit at check-in, containing quality bathrobes and sandals. The Spa was a must for my wife and the swimming pool for our kid and they both loved it. We were staying at a Junior Suite, with a beautifully frescoed ceiling. Bedding and Linen were perfect, so were our mattresses, as was the extra bed for our daughter, who otherwise likes to complain about having to sleep on an extra bed.
Next day we were off to Pisa, which was just 5 miles away. After Pisa we were back at enjoying the Spa and a lovely dinner afterwards. Food was excellent, with a nice selection of Tuscan, Italian, Vegetarian and Organic menus, as well as an impressive wine list. Crepes Suzettes were definitely the desert of that evening. Once it was ordered at one table, i believe we had it at all tables. Service was impeccable and prompt. We had a really lovely evening. For smokers, there’s a beautiful terrace at the back of the hotel, decorated with orange and lemon trees and with a terraced olive garden leading up to the top of the hill, which also makes a nice walk in the morning.
Breakfast is very rich and extensive in variety, nice selections of Tuscan ham, salami and cheese as well as for the health freaks including my wife.
There's a free wired internet connection in the room, but be aware, wi-fi is only available in common areas, which is free as well. All in all I would definitely recommend and will return to Bagni di Pisa again.

I say mattress review and that is what I mean. Fantastic place with lousy mattresses. Maybe they were left over from the palace days and are authentic for the time period and are historic. Our family stayed in Suite # 131 on the 29th of march. Is amazing place, people seemed pleased with spa part of it also. Is great place to visit but advise a air mattress if you have bad back. Stayed 8 nites in Italy and was worst mattress I slept on. Very neat place, just would not sleep there again unless I tested mattress first.

Room Tip: don't stay in 131 unless new mattress

We stayed three nights in freezing winter, breaking up a trip to Florence. Did Mary Shelley really write Frankenstein here? Maybe inspired by the creaking pipes. It's a curious old hotel, not without charm, beautiful in parts, noisy in the winter winds, built beside a steep hill and around a swish spa that seemed mostly empty to us. Our room on the third floor was long and thin and far too hot. The hotel bar was vast and comfy but a little overpriced and empty, but then there were not many people staying - it gets busier at weekends. The staff were friendly, so full marks for that, particularly the tall desk manager who always had a smile and was always helpful. the little town around had bar, pizzeria (2) and osteria (2), so plenty of options. Bet of all is the location - 10min train ride to Pisa, 30min bus ride to Lucca (bus better than train as gets you inside the walls. Only downside were the hotel's five star prices, but no nasty surprises.

Room Tip: Facing front and side have better views out over the town as opposed to out over the steep hill at b...

I enjoyed the stay at this hotel. I know it needs some repairs here and there but my room was soooo nice, frescos in the ceiling, huge room and yes, clean bathroom. The food was really good and they treated me kindly. The spa was awesome, I enjoyed the pool in the top, the grute, turkish bath and all the rest. It's very quite yes but I guess that's what I was looking for. I traveled with a local so there was not the regular tourist approach I suppose. I will love to return.
