The place is good, the people is great and the have a great customer service. The only problem I found is the amount of flies there are on the food are I have never seen something like that in a resort.

I have been in Occidental Papagayo and Occidental Tamarindo which are from the barcelo line and the allow the customers to have lunch after the check out, when we came to check out we were surprised that the lunch was not included so it was very disapointing.

In general terms the hotel is good. I'm not sure if we will come back.

My mom and I recently spent about a week and a half at the Tambor and we really enjoyed it. The pool was great (though the water mirrored the outside temperature...hot!) and the beach was absolutely gorgeous (note that it is black sand) and there were always plenty of beach chairs available under the palms. The rooms weren't wonderful but you have to ask yourself, how much time will you really be spending in the room?? The food wasn't wonderful either, but it kept you full! We paid for the Premium Service which was well worth it and if you have the means to pay for it, I would suggest doing so. There is a private air conditioned lounge that always has drinks and better snack foods and the drinks are name brands as opposed to the regular all-inclusive lack of good alcohol drinks. The rooms also face the ocean which is a huge plus.
The downside to the Tambor is that you are pretty isolated in the area. However, if you speak to the excursion desk they can pretty much get you a tour to anywhere in Costa Rica by dealing with other tour companies. You may just have to pay a bit more but it is definitely worth it if you want to see the REAL Costa Rica.
Another plus of Tambor is the wildlife there! There are millions or iguanas walking around the resort as well as brown/black squirrels, macaws, and a bird and butterfly sanctuary on the property.

Room tip: If you get the Premium Service, the rooms looking out on the water are AMAZING

As my Title states, this resort is a beautiful property but the service provided is poor. We stayed in a Suite (Spacious rooms with a living room and bedroom. Exclusive access to the Premium Level Lounge.) which cost additional. The young ladies working in the Premium Level Lounge cannot speak english well at all. This led to constant excuses why they could not assist with any items such as dinner reservations or advising that the evening buffet restaurant was to be closed two days in a row. When they tried scheduled dinner reservations they scheduled incorrect times and could not provide the required paperwork needed when arriving at restaurants. They did do a good job of informing, in broken english, you are not allowed to take anything outside of this Lounge, including drinks, EVER!!

Food was mediocre at best, breakfast was the best. At the Steak and Seafood restaurant a filet mignon was what looked to be two pieces of flank steal stacked together, cut into a round pieces and wrapped with a piece of bacon. The taste was bland to terrible. Also had surf and turf, steak again no flavor and tough and whatever was supposed to be the "turf" was breaded, soggy and terrible.

Half way through our stay, (trip was five nights) we did locate three gentlemen that were very helpful at the Guest Services desk off to the right of the front desk, and down the hall a bit, Gonzalo Rojas, Marcos Davila, and Kevin Morera. These are the gentlemen that should be working in the Premium Level Lounge, and training the front desk people on customer services!!

Lastly, I have stayed in over 25 All-Inclusive (AI) resorts around the Caribbean, Mexico and South America…all include room service as part of the AI, this Barcelo resort does not, disappointing, especially when food venues are closed without notice.

Beautiful resort and grounds, lends itself well to family travel, but to accommodate that, pool closes much too early at 7:00 p.m., beautiful basketball court but not a single basketball! Only 2 boogie boards for the whole resort, kayaks all out for repairs. It is a very rule driven place, not accommodating to outside visitors who wanted to join us for dinner, way too many security staff and too few serving staff, except for the buffet. One bartender at night sometimes for a long line up of clients. Hated seeing the macaws in cages, not a good feature in my view! It is a great resort and could easily be so much improved without much effort. Give the staff more room to take initiatives, they are capable of it and all would benefit, guests included. It is a resort, not a prison, loosen up a bit!!! I would still go back there, but for the price, I would expect improvements.

Room tip: Rooms at the far end of the resort ( closest to golf course) are very quiet, far from the nightly shows

I booked the superior room and when we were it in looked like an old Motel 6. My aunt had booked a normal room and when she stopped by she said hers was exactly the same. The bathroom had an accordion door that was broken, hair and sticky stuff on the hair dryer. The entire bathroom look like it hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned in a decade. The conditioner dispenser fell in the shower and the base behind it was completely moldy. The fridge didn’t work but they did come fix it. We booked the steak and seafood restaurant and it was not good at all. I had to spit my food back in a napkin because it was disgusting. I asked for them to grill my fish and they brought it fried. When I told the waiter, he pretty much ignored me. I am bilingual and Spanish is my first language so language barrier was not an excuse. My aunt had worst issues and they were nonchalant and lied to them half of the time. We talked to upper management and all they told us was that they would look into it. I would think that they would at least refund half.

On a positive note, the buffet, pool and beach location was the highlight of this vacation.
