ALLT NA CRICHE

Review of Gaskbeg Farm
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Aug 2016
Another awesome stay at Gaskbeg! We stayed in ALLT NA CRICHE this time. There were 3 of us and there was plenty of room. This is a 2 bedroom, one bath, living, dining and kitchen with a washing machine. It's convenient to Aviemore and an hour and a half from Inverness. It was August but we even used the electric stove to heat the living room one night.

It's a working farm - so keep that in mind. And if you like the outdoors this is the perfect place as there are plenty of walking paths on the farm it self. Lucy and Ewan are gracious hosts - and this truly is becoming a home a away from home for many of us in my family.
Date of stay: August 2016
Room Tip: Any one of the lodgings is great - I've stayed in them all

Just back from a week's stay in Bal na Cnoc - a lovely 6 bed cottage with a 2 bed cabin beside it which my teenage boys loved. The cottage is very comfortable, warmed by the kitchen Aga which was a new, and very pleasurabe experience to cook on. Our hosts, Lucy and Ewan (who live in the nearby Farmhouse - Gaskbeg) couldn't have been nicer.
The cottage is about 1/3 of a mile outside Laggan - a tiny community in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Laggan offers a lovely little shop / cafe (currently run by a Canadian family who have found themselves at the wrong end of some very silly immigration laws) where you will (currently) find a great welcome, a good cup of coffee / hot chocolate and basic essentials.
The highlight of the cottage though has to be its location. There is great walking to be had whether you want to climb one of the many Munros in the area or simply go for a short dander on one of the many lovely walks - often involving waterfalls in our experience. Laggan Wolftrax mountain biking centre offers some great mountain biking experiences ranging from easy (green) runs to very technical (black) and extreme (orange) runs. There is also some fabulous road and cross country cycling in the area with Laggan sitting at the end of the access road to the Corriearrick pass.
12 minutes drive away is Newtonemore which offers a wider range of activities including the fanstatic Highland Folk Museum and slightly further on (Kingussie) the Highland Wildlife Park.

This was our second stay at Gaskbeg, the first being at Bail nan cnoc last year and Alt na Criche this time.
Cottage was big and spacious, clean and warm.
Teenagers beware, broadband only available in the front of the house.
It is isolated being seven miles from Newtonmore but this adds to the experience, it is possible to buy a takeaway in Aviemore and get back with it still warm !
We will definitely return , but book in plenty of advance as they go fast !

Stayed in this glorious location on Gaskbeg farm, home to the Grant family. Lucy, Ewan and the whole family made us feel very at home and took time out of their busy life on the farm to chat with us. The cottage was a joy to stay in. It was presented to us in perfect condition with a high level of cleanliness. We immediately settled in with the bottle of wine gifted to us by Lucy. Surrounded by beautiful scenery whatever the weather you kust couldn't help but feel relaxed here. Can't wait to go back again. A great base to explore the Highlands.

The cottage was spotless and equipped to a really high standard. Our hosts Lucy and Ewan could not have been more helpful and friendly.Despite being in the middle of the busiest time of the year(700 sheep lambing) they always had time to chat and explain what was happening on the farm. Can't recommend Gaskbeg highly enough. Will definitely be back

Gaskbeg Farm is a family run, working farm set back from the road...the 2 cottages are slightly further up the hill with a lovely view from the front and backing onto the hillside behind. Easy access though with plenty of parking. The cottage I stayed in was pristinely clean and well furnished in a contemporary yet comfortable style with all mod cons! The setting is stunningly peaceful and very handy for all the area has to offer, from the Cairngorms to Creag Meagaidh Nature Reserve, yet only 10 mins off the A9. Everything you'd ever want from a holiday cottage. Oh and the advertised free wifi works...unlike many places I stay!
