Mushroom soup, OK. Risotto, softer than it should be. Codfish very good. Tagliatelle with wild boar, almost with no meat and served with fork, knife and ...spoon!.. Tiramisu, one of the worst (with chocolate chips on top..), panacotta, mediocre. Bisteca, average.

We had Sunday lunch at this restaurant on a day when several other eateries were closed.
I suppose we should have realised when we got inside that things weren't going to be excellent: it's one of those places that probably looked great 20 years ago but hasn't been revamped since then, just added to: it's cluttered with old nick-nacks, faded pictures etc; it has cramped tables and poor lighting, tacky menus: the space needs bringing into the 21st century.

As for the food, the starter of antipasti was average in quality and not presented with any care.
The wild boar dish was acceptable 'homely' cooking.
The guinea fowl (chicken??) was tough and contained very little actual meat.

There were a few locals eating here, who seemed to be happy with the food, so it could be that I'm judging by the wrong standards. The food was not cheap, so I feel that better value can be found elsewhere in the town.

The staff (members of the same family) were friendly.

From a distance Il Grottone looks very cozy and Italian style.
It is a family owned place. Mamma is serving the food and papa is in the kitchen.
However the important thing for a restaurant is the food and that was a mixed experience.
We got the best pizza Margaritha (thin and crispy) and a delicious stew of wild boar with tomato.
However the pasta carbonara, which every italian chef should be able to make, is the worst we have ever had. It was literally uneatable.
In my opinion, there are better restaurants in Scansano for the same price.

We visited there one Saturday at noon time, so not much people there, but nevertheles, we were very warmly welcomed and our small (one year old) grandchild with blue eyes got a special attention . Service was also otherwise really kind and even if they didn't speak English and we not so many words Italian, we managed well. We ordered pizza and steak, all very good.

Visited this restaurant for lunch and dinner. When we walked in, we looked at each other and said we've been here before. When the owner appeared we knew it. Great Tuscan food and wonderful pizza. The owner enjoyed talking politics with my husband. What a fun time.
