“Happy Ski-ing/Snow-boarding holiday”
Reviewed 6 March 2012

Our first visit to both the resort and the Astoria based on friends' recommendation and how glad I am to have received it as we had a really lovely holiday there. My teenage son even managed to comment on how friendly the hotel staff were! We were efficiently met at the railway station which was a relief having missed connections in Munich following a delayed flight.
The public areas were good and although the spa areas got increasingly busy ( & the steam room was closed) and noisy whilst we were there it was still very enjoyable, especially after a great day's ski-ing.
We didn't get offered any package when booking but were re-assured we would be next time so that's an incentive to return!

We have just come back from our second visit to the Astoria in Bad Hofgastein, and it was even better than we remembered. This time my wife came with my son and me. We went skiing and she had a relaxing time in the hotel spa, getting some writing done and enjoying the lovely walks around the town.

I'm writing this review because we also realised what excellent value this hotel offers. Friends were staying up the road in another place which was slightly cheaper, but offered no faciities whatsoever - no public spaces, no spa, no swimming pool, nothing. At the Astoria, we worked out that we were paying on average 80-90 Euros per night (and remember this is high-season for skiing). This gets you breakfast and dinner - AND they serve an inclusive afternoon snack which keeps you going apres ski and through to dinner. However, our package also included three days ski-pass (a day's at list price is over 40 Euros for an adult) or a voucher for a treatment in the hotel spa. The public areas are lovely, and the use of sauna, swimming pool & infra-red chamber is all included - you only pay extra for e.g. a massage or a seaweed skin treatment.

Oh, and the skiing is fabulous too - your pass allows you to range across five connected mountains all with a variety of slopes for all abilities. We will return next year. A real winner.

Great hotel for skiing trips. Close to the lifts, great bar that's open until you want it to be, great food and very friendly staff. What else could you want?
Family run hotel who make you feel very welcome and even join you for dinner and drink in the Barrel-Shaped bar until the early hours of the morning!
Clean modern rooms. Great spa to help unwind after a long day's skiing. What more can I say, except worth a try?

Room Tip: Speak to Jennifer, who will help.

A great hotel. Superb service from the first welcome from Frau Jennifer (in charge of the front desk), to the friendliness and helpfulness of all staff, especially also the bar staff and the restaurant ladies and gentlemen. Spacious room with sitting area and balcony for me and my son. Ten minute walk from the ski lift. Very efficient ski equipment service from the major rental place near the lift (just across the road from the lifts). Also great folk at the ski equipment deposit just to the right - look out for the charming fac totum guy with the moustache - he's such a sweety, helping everyone - try your pigeon German out on him - a few words make all the difference. Make sure you get off the slopes in time to get your kit back in before 5pm - they close right on the dot. Food at the hotel is good, but not haute quisine. If you ask for a good glass of wine at the bar you will get just that - not excessively expensive and of high quality. When you get off the slopes and toddle back before five o'clock, there is a useful snack waiting for you in the bar area - no extra charge! Rooms very quiet at night - but party folk can go out to the centre (5 mins) for extra fun. Lovely indoor swimming pool. Fly to Salzburg or Munich, and then take the wundershoenes Deutschebahn - first class is really inexpensive. 3hrs from Munich or 1.5hrs from Salzburg. We're going back. It's great. The various ski resorts are all interconnected so you can ski from one to another.
