Owner description: Hidden in the deep River Rye valley, the beautiful and tranquil abbey ruins reflect nearly one thousand years of spiritual, commercial and Romantic history. Rievaulx was one of the first Cistercian abbeys to be founded in England in around 1130, and after the dissolution, became the centre of commercial activity for many years. The abbey forge was used to set up an ironworks on the site. The abbey then entered its Romantic period when its picturesque ruins became a beacon for poets, painters, and scholars. It was one of the first major ruins to be conserved by the Office of Works (ancestor of English Heritage) in 1917.

Love it here. I know exactly why they built in this valley. Like an escape from modern day life, free nibbles as you enter doesn't go amiss. The curds are lovely.

Love it here, still a lot of the Abbey left to see and a great tea room. We went Easter weekend and was surprised that there was falconry there that weekend, certainly enhanced the visit.
Just be mindful of parking as it was busy when we went so had to park on the road as the car park isn't big enough when it's public holidays.
Enjoyed the visit despite the good old British bank holiday weather!

I’m surprised I’d never heard of these ruins before because they really are a “must see”. The drive to get there is a little scary because the roads can be extremely narrow, with many corners. The ruins themselves are beautiful & there is an audio tour available, which I always find enhances the experience. Young children will enjoy it because of the magical feel of the place with staircases, arches & lots of rooms.

Had an early start to get to Rievaulx Abbey, a 90 min drive for us.

Got to admit, we were not disappointed.
A very nice location with the Abby nestled into a valley. The ruins are quite extensive and in places very well preserved.
We spent just over an hour having a good look around.

As a bonus, there was a falconry display over Easter which was also quite good.

Can be a little pricey to get in, but as members of English Heritage it was free for us.

Dogs are allowed on the site.

Afterwards we went along the Cleveland Way for a walk (around 3 miles) to Helmsley Castle
