Called in today for coffee and a fruit scone. Used to be a regular haunt before the farm shop at Pittington opened and we discovered the Tea Barn at Pity Me. Unfortunately our double shot decaf latte was just like drinking coloured milk and we could not butter the scones as they crumbled when they were cut. We would never order the cheese scones anyway as they are disgusting. One expects a cheese scone to be savoury, maybe with some mustard and herb, but these are very sweet plain scones with a bit of melted cheese on the top. This is where Shincliffe let's itself down. There is only toast if you fancy something savoury as the scones are both sweet and they don't do English muffins or crumpets. Don't understand this as crumpets are a doddle to do from frozen and most of their stuff is frozen and microwaved. The cakes are also very poor when contrasted with the other two places. I don't agree with the ageist review as the place is often full of mothers with babies and families. It is also a nice place to sit out in the summer. There is no compromise for dogs inside and there is an opportunity to let dog owners sit in the corridor but you are able to sit under the eves outside if it rains. Also don't agree with the review that talked about poor staff. We have always found that most of the staff are friendly and they work very hard. We have never seen them talking instead of working. The place is also always spotless even when people have left their table and carpet in a deplorable state, as some families do, the staff clear up immediately. The toilets are also very clean.
