My husband and I have just stayed here for a week needing a ‘fly and flop’ and this hotel certainly gave us that.

The pros.

The food is lovely considering it’s all buffet. (Even the specialty restaurants) we enjoyed lots of great food. We did expect better food from the specialty restaurants and didn’t realise it was all buffet. Considering men need long trousers it wasn’t that special. We enjoyed the main restaurant (Amadores) much more. It caters for all types, nationalities etc. (Brits are in the minority)

The view from the rooms is spectacular, very peaceful and relaxing, the rooms are tastefully decorated and although basic, provided what we needed.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The location, we were a short taxi ride from Puerto Rico (€4).

The cons.

Food labelling.

The food labelling wasn’t great. It was either non existent or incorrect. My husband ate what he thought was a potato salad but it turned out to have fish in it. Ok if you’re not fussy but in an age of allergies I would expect this to be a lot better than it was. Some days there weren’t any labels so you it was an educated guess as to what you were eating.

There are also no snack served in the bars. A bowls of nuts or crisps would have gone down a treat. In the end we paid €3 for a bag from the shop.

The drinks, you get a good selection but the spirits aren’t of great quality, if you ask for extra in your cocktails though, they oblige and they taste much better. Prosecco is included and it was very nice. Much better than the wine.

Our room was 101. The furthest away from anything, bottom of the hotel. Every time someone above us flushed a toilet, you could hear it in our room. It wasn’t so loud that we felt we needed to move, but it did irritate us a little.

The entertainment is a little naff and not to our taste.

If you’re British and you like tea. BRING YOUR OWN! You cannot get a decent cup out here.

Overall the cons were minor and we would have no problem staying again. From our expectations of the holiday, these were what made it a 4 instead of a 5.

The Riu Vistamar is a lovely hotel and probably has the best views on the island. Cleverly built into the rocks over a few levels, you get a panoramic view of the sea perfect for sunrise and sunset. The recent renovation means everything is brand new, modern and clean, and the food is of a good standard. The only improvement we could suggest is that the a la carte restaurants are still buffet style, rather than table service like many other hotels - it would be nice to have this incorporated to change things up but, again, we’re hard pushed to find fault with the hotel. There was never a rush for sunbeds in the morning and there was a lovely relaxing atmosphere around the hotel.

Amadores beach (where the hotel is situated) is much nicer and more chilled than the neighbouring Puerto Rico, which seems more geared to tourists.

Puerto Mogán, which is a short taxi ride or bus away, is beautiful and makes for a nice day out.

This was our first holiday as a couple and provided a nice, relaxing break, although I would say that there isn’t a great deal to do so a holiday here would be more geared towards sun-seekers!

This was our first trip to Gran Canaria, and we liked the look of this newly refurbished hotel, particularly since it offers all-inclusive. Given its cliff-top location, this is definitely an advantage as you never have to leave the premises if you don't want to!

Hotel facilities: Two big pools on different 'floors' of the hotel and lots of sunbeds (we were told there are more sunbeds than guests). Lots of different areas to sit at, near or away from the pools, with or without shade.. Also separate childrens pools and sitting areas.
The hotel is large and spread out and therefore involves a bit of walking and steps to get around the different areas.

Evening entertainment was better than most hotels I have stayed in. The nightly shows were only about 50 minutes, but varied in style and of a reasonable standard.

Bars: I thought the bars were a bit lacking in atmosphere. The main bar where the entertainment was has most of the seats arranged theatre style facing the stage, rather than around tables. The Sports Bar (open until 7am!) is a bit impersonal too.

Restaurants: Main restaurant (for breakfast and dinner) is bright and airy. Breakfasts are the standard fare with the usual choices of hot and cold foods, with omelettes, pancakes and waffles made freshly, and a huge choice of freshly squeezed juices. Dinner offers a good selection of dishes and one thing I must comment on favourably is that all the hot foods were HOT, not luke warm as often happens with buffets. On-tap wine was fine.
Lunch is in the "Sea Breeze" restaurant, and again there is plenty of choice, but be warned - the restaurant is well named and tends to be cool! The outside bit of it was positively COLD when we were there! This restaurant also hosts some of the themed evening dinners - 'grill' night and Canadian cuisine.
The Asian Specialty restaurant was excellent (book as soon as you can, it doesn't hold too many people).

Beach: Hotel provides a shuttle bus to/from Amadores beach. I would consider this essential considering the hotel's cliff-top location. Only complaint would be that the bus doesn't run around lunchtime, and stops rather early in the day. The beach itself is lovely - clean, safe. If you want a sunbed and or umbrella there, they are €4 each.
Puerto Rico is a 10/15 minute walk round the coast from Amadores beach, or a short taxi ride (about €4) from the hotel.

Room: good facilities and very clean - safe, fridge, nice bathroom, LOTS of clothes hangers, balcony with a lovely view overlooking Amadores beach...

Overall we were very happy with our stay and would definitely recommend this hotel.

This was my first visit to Gran Canaria and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The 10 nights flew by. The hotel has just had a refurb and although I did not have the pleasure of seeing what the old place looked like, the new hotel is very nice indeed. Perched up at the very top of the cliff overlooking Amadores beach. Some people thought it was remote but I disagree as you can either walk down the hill and catch the buses that go everywhere or use the free hotel provided coach which goes up and down 10 times every day to Amadores beach. We had been reading reports of people being sick at the RIU VISTAMAR but we ate everything and did not have any problems. The food is the usual all inclusive varied buffet fare which is what you’d expect. They do have 2 restaurants that you can book etc, but we did not bother with those. The TUI rep Kate is very helpful and works hard to keep you happy. The lunch restaurant is right on top on the 9th floor and is called Sea Breeze and you sure get a strong breeze up there ! There is a sports bar open from 5 pm to 7 am ! Gregorio is the best barman I have come across, but I did not make it to 7 am ! I also failed the challenge of walking UP from Amadores to the hotel and had to be rescued by a passing cab !
