Finally got round to writing what is a honest review of Bahia Blanca. Ignore all the bad ones because i cant believe what people must expect.
My Girlfriend and i came here for our 1st ever hoilday on 4th July for 12 nights and we could not have been more happy with our choice. Certainly value for money :-)
Lets get one thing out of the way...YES 99% of hotels in Puerto Rico have lots of steps, obviously seeming though they are all built into the hillside.
Transfer from airport is around 90mins!!
We arrived midday at was told we were in room 818 right at the top. We got the lift (quite a strange little thing) and went to our room. For the rest of the holiday though we hardly used the lift and walked the 224 (eachway) steps each time. A great exercise and great for a last minute thigh and bum tone up. You find at about 150 steps though that it starts to hurt even for us two who are quite fit and athletic, and after several days it does become abit of a pain, but the lift was there so nobody can complain at all.
Room was very good, we got a un-refurbished one and to be fair i dont think i would spend £250 extra just for one of the new ones, the old ones certainly provide all you need for a relaxing holiday. Good size rooms, bathroom was clean, kitchen large (beware of little ants though so keep your food high up and closed), and a huge south facing balcony that got the sun 0730 - 1830. A great way to just start the day was open the bedroom window and look straight out over the sea, before having breakfast in the hot sun (weather forecasts said it was daily 26 degrees, well it certainly felt more like 40 degrees, not once did we have a bad day).
Rooms are cleaned every couple of days and are done very well, they even wash up for you.
Supermarket is average, quite pricey and its amazing it can be cheaper to buy a bottle of local wine than it is to buy bread and milk. There are supermarkets elsewhere in Puerto Rico, but you only saving pennies and its a fair walk back if you have no car.
Pool is quite small but big enough to have a swim in AND it is HEATED!! Yep even in July it was 30 degrees, which means you jump on and no cold shock which was great. Pool entertainment is very average and i would worry about lack of activities for children. Plenty of loungers although we noticed that people did get up early and put towels on them and not return allday whichwe thought is a little bit out of order.
Pool bar is small and quite tacky and has a happy hour 1630 - 1700 & 2230 - 2300 which is buy one get one free so a good time to buy is then.
We ate twice at the restaurant, first time was tapas which was ok, second time was near the end of the holiday and was awful!! I had a standard pizza and my Girlfriend had lemon sole, well you have never seen anything like it, came out as a fully boned fish with a wierd skin on ( we had eaten the same meal in other restaurants which was amazing). It looked like it had been grilled and then put in a deep fat fryer. We complained and was gobsmacked to be told that the fish is not fresh but frozen!!! He replaced it with a carbonara pasta dish, which too was awful. When we came to pay our bill we were suprised that it was free!! We didnt have to pay a penny which was a very lovely gesture.
The Evening entertainment is very average and what you expect, but only lasts for about an hour.
The hotel is set in a perfect location, 10 mins to either Amadores beach or the Harbour (cross over zebra crossing and along the walkway, watch for the lizards, but the walk quite romantic as you get to see the sunset)
A few pointers for the island now.
DO NOT get caught by the ANFI timeshare reps, there everywhere on a FRI, tried to get us but we knew there game and con. Only one beach you need to visit and that is Amadores, clean and very lovely, sea was warm enough to swim in. Restaurants there are your usual beach type and close around 2200 though, we ate there once but not again. Bars all do a beer for 1.5 Euro which is cheap, sunloungers and parosols are 10 euro for the day. They do try to drag you in and it does get annoying.
Took a walk up to the Europa Centre and visited the Commercial centre and these are just throwbacks to the 80's, full of tacky cafe type restaurants, we never even bothered on a night, just not our thing at all.
For food go to OSCARS down by the harbour!!!!
Most amazing Poached sole and grilled salmon amongst many dishes. Service is great, they even store your drinks at the front of house and top you up when you need it. Sometimes there is quite a queue, but its worth it and we ate here several times. Can be a little dear, bottle of wine, 2 starters and 2 mains arounnd 60 Euro, so not mega bad considering the quality of service and food.
There are around 5 restaurants all joined onto Oscars and are all worth a visit.
Next door there is also Charlies bar, we seemed to make this our home and really only ever drank there (you can even take your drinks into Oscars with you). We became so regular there that one night we just called for a quick drink and the bar staff (very friendly) were shocked when we said we were leaving as they were used to us having a round 3/4 bottles of wine a night!!
One little nice restaurant for an afternoon snack is the little fish place round by the ferry's, cant remember its name, but did a fgreat tuna steak, and the guy who stands outside is very welcoming.
Dolphin trip is a MUST, takes about an hour in quite scarey choppy water to get there but YES we saw dolphins which was amazing and also a poor little turtle miles out at sea. Beware though, several people were sea-sick on the way back.
Aqua park is "ok", bit small really and a few long queues, but ok for a day out, decent rides, bus is only 2 euro eachway from the centre.
We went on long walks everyday, and covered probably the whole of puerto rico, some very steep and long climbs but all good exercise.
You MUST visit MOGAN!!! Ferry is 10 euro's and go about every 30 mins, and what a beautiful place it is, just go i dont even need to go into detail. Food at Basils was great aswell, market is abit of a mish mash and i wouldnt go to it again, but Mogan...oh yes :-)
Think i have covered everthing, and bottom line is, we loved it. The Hotel, Puerto Rico, everything. As all do, we didnt want to come home but both agreed we had, had a very lovely romantic holiday and will certainly return
