“Basic but decent hotel”

Quite basic, but the hotel has a nice location next to the river and is a good choice if visiting Corte

Stay away from this hotel, its nothing like the pictures or description on the webpage. Dark and dusty location in the bottom of the valley between the road and the river. Strange smell in the room, and lots of noises from the corridor. Hotel staff locked themselves into the room 7 am without knocking. We found the hotel staff rued. Would rather sleep on the street than in this hotel.

We were camping in Saint Florent for several nights as part of our first visit to Corsica. During our stay we decided that a stay in a hotel in the centre of Corsica would be a good way to end before catching the ferry in Bastia for Italy. After checking out a few guidebooks we decided that Jardins de la Glaciere sounded great. I gave them a call and the friendly and efficient member of staff told me that they could not give us a room for both the Saturday and Sunday nights as we had hoped. He did have a room available on the Sunday and this we booked, resigning ourselves to another night on the campsite. Which in reality was no hardship.

We checked into the hotel at 2pm on the Sunday afternoon. Our room wasn't ready so we took the car for a drive up the Restonica Gorge. This is stunning with a very tight and winding road which is not for faint hearted. We eventually pulled up at the side of the road in a parking bay and walked down to the boulder strewn, crystal clear river. We stayed listening to the birds in the trees, the flow of the water over the rocks and the wind of the trees. I also swam in a rock pool in the river, after the time on the coast the fresh, cold water was refreshing in the extreme.

With the advent of a brief rain shower we headed back to the hotel to find that our second floor room was available. The room was large, airy, sparcely furnished with a tiled floor. Perhaps the only downside to this room is that as it is on the corner and the stairs are external, the noise at night from other residents coming in and out of the landing is slightly off putting.

The swimming pool and jacuzzi area is grand, although as it located in a hedged garden it feels isolated from the environs. Sitting on the grass terrace, underneath the mature willow trees and next to the river is an altogether different and sublime experience. I should also point out for those that are brave enough there is also a pool suitable for swimming in the river next to the hotel.

We walked into Corte in the evening, taking us about 30 mins. The city, patricularly the old town is fascinating. We walked around until we found a restaurant - U Museo - where we had dinner, after which we ascended to the Crow's Nest in the dark with views of the citadel and across the city. Walking back to the hotel in the dark felt safe and the sky was stunning.

Breakfast was very pleasant, although we had hoped to eat outside, but as the car park was full we were asked to eat in the breakfast room. The food was good, with a range of cereals, juices, cheeses, breads and meats and of course good coffee.

This is a charming, small and fairly basic hotel located in a place of great scenic beauty and close to the intersting and historic town of Corte.

This was a totally waste! The Restonica Valley is worth a visit - but find another hotel!!! Yes - it is situated beside the river and the pictures on their website is ok. But when you arrive there - it is dusty, it is dark, the river is not that green, there were garbage in the river, the air-condition in the room didn’t work, there was a terrible smell in the room, it was very noisy from the other rooms... The breakfast was ok - but paying that much for a breakfast is unnecessary! Go to Restonica Valley - but find another hotel!!!

I toured Corsica by bicycle in May 2008 with four other men. We always go for two star hotels with a twin and a triple room. Hotels in Corsica are on the expensive side but this one was the best value that we had. It is certainly worth more than two stars and may have gained one by the time you read this.

Corte is a twenty minute walk away, and in the other direction the Gorge de Restonica is a 40 minute cycle ride up and much less coming back down. I just hope you have better weather than we did.

The usual French breakfast of cake and coffee is not enough when you are cycling, but the breakfast here was outstanding. By far the best we had all holiday. The staff were very helpful during our stay - even though cyclists seem to cause more trouble than other guests.

Altogether a great place to stay.
