“Hotel Okay, Staff Terriible, Residents a Pain”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2007

We have just returned from three weeks at this hotel. Unfortunately it was the beginning of the season and we found the staff to be extremely surly and unhelpful. The rooms smelt of damp, were not particularly clean and there were terrible problems with the lack of hot water and a lot of power cuts. We go to Goa every year and have done so for the last 15 years or so and this was the worst experience I have ever had.
A lot of the problems are that the hotel is a mixture of private holiday/residential homes and then tourists and these DO NOT mix well at all. Residents got annoyed at children using the pool and any subsequent noise!!! A lot of private parties were held for the residents in the hotel grounds and the staff catered to these people as opposed to the tourists. In the restaurant, no facilities (ie mosquito burners etc) were supplied unlike any other hotels we have stayed in. The food itself was edible but again, we have eaten at much better places for a lot cheaper prices.
Despite the residents, the hotel itself would be nice if it only catered for tourists as the staff are not concerned with tourists, only the residents. The hotel is quite a way out in Arpora, but there is a hotel bus service to take you into main Calungute. The swimming pool, although nice and warm, had quite a number of tiles missing and the sunbeds/parasols were very few and far between and were not cleaned.
We will, of course, be going back to Goa but will definitely NOT stay at this hotel.

Lagoa Azul, a bit out of the way but accessible to everything via a taxi which you are allocated the same driver after your first fare. The hotel is in much need of TLC - and the pool area not very inviteable. Breakfast was pretty dire and not worth getting out of bed for. Tried to have a couple of early and late evening drinks at the bar but some of the residents were very obnoxious, loud and extremely embarrasing, using abusive language and spoiling it for others. I hope the people from Goa realise that we are not all alike ! The hotel room itself was rather disappointing, very dark and dingy but having been to Goa many times before after a couple of days you dont tend to notice so much, after all its only a place to lay your head. As mentioned before local residential owners and their relatives trying to chat to you at the bar - letting you know that they own property within the vacinity and how many times they have been to Goa - what difference this makes is beyond me. Overall, wouldnt stay at Lagoa Azul again, and after a few taxi rides found that our driver had taken on another couple from another hotel therefore we often had to change the time that we actually wanted to go out for a meal or be picked up ! The cleaning boys also expect a tip for cleaning the room and withold your towels until they know that you are back in your room to pay up!

  • Liked — It was quiet and peaceful overall
  • Disliked — Some of the abusive drunk residents

If you are considering this hotel I would definately recommend it, as it is peaceful & relaxed. The rooms are basic, but, have everything you need they are large & airy so keep quite cool. Rooms are cleaned daily with a change of shower & pool towels if required.

The 2 pools are clean & they have loads of sun beds to lie back & relax on. Watch out for the little chip monks (maybe not chip monks but look like them) they run around the walls & trees by the garden pool.

We only ate breakfast at the hotel so can't really comment on the food, but breakfast is buffett style with breads, ceral, fruit etc.. or you can pay extra for omelettes, beans on toast etc..

There are loads of amazing restaurants within 5 minutes walking distance of the Lagoa Azul or favourite being Saffron Spice, left on the main road about 50 yards. It is slightly more expensive than some of the others in the area, well when I say more expensive it probably only works out being an extra £1 on the bill, but definately worth the extra. Try the Chicken Tikka Starter it melts in the mouth absolutely fabulous.

Just returned from 2 wks at the Lagoa Azul. It was our first time to Goa, been to North India previously so arrived with open mind.
Allocated very poor first room, bottom floor on corner facing taxi's, we were supposed to be a suite but moved to a lesser standard of room beside pool until our normal suite would be ready, 4 days?!!? Also made not asked to sign a disclaimer by manager.
Had frequent powercuts in rooms, not in hotel area they have a backup generator so that tells you what the management thinks of their guests.
Poolside area very dirty unsafe with cracked tiles, parasols laughable as were the sunbeds. Glasses lay for days untouched.
Manager refused to see us and indeed offered no compensation regarding room and lack of facilites as advertised. The poolside bar never open.
Staff generally pleasant although not keen to 'work'. Maid was initially lazy and tried to get home by 10am or you wont get your room cleaned...............mmmm
Shower area gruby, bed comfy, quiet at nights for good sleep.
Overall we loved Goa and will certainly be back, hotel is if you ignore the above was ok but let down the other parts of the hotel.
The breakfast was very poor , other meals fine.
Beware of non advertised TAX by the management, they seem to ask 20% for alcohol, 8% for service and another 14% for food. Even though they advertise 8% only. On query we were told 'it must be correct since the accountant uses an excel spread sheet'. What a load of................................... He also refused to speak about the issue.
Oh well. Security staff very nice, taxi's outside hotel will try to rip you off big time, get rubbish like 'its hotel prices and its after dark'. Tell them to get a life and walk by , they soon run after you........
Food joints, all spice absolutely fab with service to match, shore bar anjuna simply sublime. sebastians bakery beside hotel good and friendly, say hi to elvis the signer.
Markets great no real hassle except for one rude little muslim man who thinks woman are worthless - he learned the hardway I am afraid.
Goan's generally the best of the best, just go with the flow, we are still floating and thats nothing to do with any illegal substances.
Hope the above helps.

...we have been visiting Goa for the last 10 years and absolutely love it as a winter holiday destination. For the last 7 years we have always stayed at Lagoa Azul and although we think that standards have dropped over recent years we have already booked to return again in 2008. The Staff are all very friendly and the rooms are adequately furnished, with air con and a ceiling fan in each room. The hotel could now benefit from an update of it's accomodation and pool areas are in need of a makeover - the pools are very clean though. All in all we are still happy with the location - away from the noise of Baga and Calangute but would be more than happy to see some cosmetic improvements.

  • Liked — the location
  • Disliked — in need of cosmetic surgery
