We decided to dine at the Mermaid restaurant on the fourth evening of our stay in Petra. It sits on the beachfront road in a run of several restaurants. We chose a table and were soon handed a couple of menus by the polite waiter. We decided to have a litre of the house red whilst we waited and as with everywhere else we dined, it was fine, nothing brilliant, but tasty, full bodied and hit the right spot.
We had already enjoyed a sizeable lunch in Anaxos so we decided to share a starter and opted for the fried courgette flowers. These arrived within minutes and were as they should be, lightly fired in a tempura batter, but soft and creamy inside and piping hot. We were also served some oregano dusted slices of bread which we decided to leave till later, rather than fill up on them prior to the main course being served.
For main course, Caroline chose a pork dish whose name escapes me, but it was essentially several slices of what looked like loin of pork in a rich, but not over-powering tomato sauce. I chose a simple chicken souvlaki, which is easy to overcook and thus make tough but it was cooked to the second, tender and soft and juicy.
After the main course, we drained the last of the wine whereaupon the waiter appeared with a beautiful, caramel topped dessert which he said was on the house. It was indeed delicious and the perfect ending to a very good meal.
The best surprise of all was the bill, just €28, so again, a good quality meal for two in Petra at a very inexpensive price
