Have just returned from an 11 day stay at the Mythos Platanias apartments and cannot recommend it highly enough. The apartment was spacious & immaculately clean [apart from Sundays, room is serviced daily] with a lovely balcony. The shower doesn't have a curtain but until very recently this was the norm in Greece, so wasn't a difficulty to us. And the pool area was absolutely gorgeous which was a bonus!! The property is halfway up the hill to the old town of Platanias and there's plenty of parking for guests around the back of the apartments. The staff were all friendly & helpful and the atmosphere around the complex was very relaxing .............. just what was needed. If you're looking for a friendly, relaxing, good quality apartment in a quieter part of town then this is the place for you.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 102 which was in a perfect location, would recommend it.

My partner and I stayed at the Mythos Hotel Apartments for 7 nights last summer as part of a package holiday through Thomson. Our experience was very pleasant and if we return to Crete we will probably stay there again!

THE APARTMENT
The apartment consisted of a front room with sofas, a writing desk, a large dining table and a (very) small kitchenette, and the bedroom, which had two beds, a large wardrobe, another writing table and a small balcony. The bathroom adjoined the bedroom. The floor was tiled throughout. The furniture was in good condition, the mattresses were firm but comfortable, and there were some extra blankets and pillows in the wardrobe if needed.

The bathroom was small and like most Greek bathrooms, there was no curtain or other partition around the shower, so the floor in the bathroom (not to mention the toilet seat) did get very wet whenever we showered; that being said, the weather was extremely dry and there was a drain in the middle of the floor, so the water drained/evaporated quickly.

The balcony was very small and looked out over the pool and down the hillside towards the bay. It afforded some nice views and was pleasant in the evenings, when the breeze rolled in.

The kitchenette was also quite small, but stocked with plenty of dishes, cookware and silverware, as well as a hob, a refrigerator, a kettle and a toaster - more than enough to be going on with on a self-catering holiday! We couldn't exactly make a 4-star meal in it, but then we only "self-catered" breakfast and lunch, and even then not every day. It was more than adequate to our needs.

SERVICE

The room was cleaned and made-up daily. We chose to re-use our towels, but on the occasions when we left them on the floor, fresh ones were promptly provided.

We rented a safe for a small deposit (I think about EUR 5.00/night, definitely worth it for storing valuables) and air-conditioning as well. The A/C was a flat rate for the whole stay, I forget how much - fewer than EUR 50.00, though, and an absolute godsend in June. The weather was sunny and bright and HOT, HOT, HOT, so the need for A/C was non-negotiable! It powered up quickly and could cool the whole apartment down within 20 minutes. Being tiled, the apartment stayed cool for a while after the A/C was switched off, but we did spend more time with it on than off (and having paid a flat amount, we weren't charged based on usage).

We used the apartment as a base for independent exploration, so can't comment on the management, but we certainly never had any issues with them. Though there were a fair few people at the hotel (young couples, families with small children/teenagers, OAPs), it was very quiet at night and even during the day. There was some "pool noise" from the children, but this wasn't too bothersome and their parents had generally dried them off and taken them elsewhere by evening.

LOCATION & AMENITIES
The location was, for our needs, practically perfect. Platanias is not a thing of beauty and a joy forever, but it is very well connected to the rest of Crete and has all the amenities a tourist could require. There are supermarkets, pharmacies, proper restaurants, fast-food joints, ice-cream parlours, beach-gear and souvenir shops galore, and a very nice soft sand beach all within a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Walk down the hillside and you find yourself at the central bus-stop for Platanias - the ticketing office is right there, and the staff are very helpful. We went to Heraklion (to see Knossos), Chania and Paleochora from Platanias. The bus service (KTEL) is frankly a dream: the coaches are comfortable and air-conditioned, the service runs perfectly to time, and detailed timetables can be checked in advance on the KTEL website. Our local council could learn a thing or two (hundred) from the Cretan bus service!!

Speaking of the hillside - everyone here seems to - yes, the hill is quite steep, and in the midsummer heat it can be a bit taxing. However the hotel porters your luggage from the bottom to the top and back again at the beginning and end of your stay, so really the only heavy thing to haul along is your own body! While the hill makes this location less-than-ideal for elderly or disabled guests, it is NOT the horrible obstacle some reviews portray and it would certainly not stop us from returning to the hotel.

All in all, the Mythos Hotel Apartments were clean, comfortable, centrally-located for amenities, in a town well-connected to the rest of Crete, and they represented excellent value for money for our trip. We would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Crete on a budget, looking for basic but good accommodation in an area well situated for sightseeing around the island.

We went with our two children for two weeks, apartments were spotless, maid service 6 days a week, pool and pool area was immacualte, Panos the owner was the perfect host , nothing was too much trouble, ,we did find the whole resort was a little expensive but the food at the Mythos was excellent value, fresh and delicious. The hill was not as bad as people make out, not reccomended for somebody with walking difficulties, but this is pointed out morethan once in the brochure and the travel agents. All in all we had a fabulous holiday, with something different to do every day, beautiful beaches , especially diamond beach and the magnifacent Elofinisi , we look forward to returning this year .

We went to the Mythos Apartments for a week at the end of October 2009 We are aged 62 and 54 (both with a young outlook). First of all can I say that the hill which keeps getting mentioned in reviews was not a problem for us - OK it is there but you know that before you book. The apartment itself was clean and the maid who came daily was very polite. Amenities were sufficient for a week's stay - kitchen facilities are the same as any self-catering apartment in Greece. If you want five star - then pay for five star. Panos was very helpful and polite even though it was the last week of the season and I bet he was knackered. Platanias is a very pretty village with good bus connections to Chania and from there to Heraklion if you wish to explore Crete a bit without hiring a car. All in all I would thoroughly recommend the Mythos if you want a basic and enjoyable stay in the western side of Crete.

Fancy some people moaning about the hill! Must be some unfit people out there. Admittedly if elderly or infirm the Mythos isnt for you but anyone of average fitness should cope ok.
Location away from the main resort is ideal and half way to the old village where the best restaurants are. I would recommend the Agklioma (sp) which is a family restaurant further up the hill but great food at reasonable prices.
The room was very clean and a good size. Pool is a little on the small side but there were plenty of others locally to try if it wasnt your thing. Never had any problems getting a sun bed. We ate here 4 nights out of 14 and took the food for what it was - basic bar food. BBQ was good value at 10 euros and Panos was very friendly.
Only downside was the dogs! Every night about 3/4 in the morning they would be off, barking and howling. Sometimes the odd one but often 3 or 4 at a time. For this reason only I wouldnt go back. On the + side the sunsets up here were beautiful.
