“Super hotel, excellent value.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2010

We stayed at Sofia Beach in mid August and thoroughly enjoyed it. The hotel and it's rooms are immaculately clean and the bedding and towels were changed daily. The resort is mostly populated by scandanavians which seems to give it a bit more class. The local restaurants were excellent with a really good atmosphere. We would particularly recommend Mylos Water Mill Restaurant just across the road and Ariadne which fronts onto the beach right next door to Sofia Beach. There is also a nice Chinese just down the road and Karma steakhouse is well worth a visit. For a nice Greek salad at lunch time we walked about half a mile towards Chania to a bar called Loco which was excellent.
The resort itself has everything you would need with good quality supermarkets. The beach is lovely and when we were there provided a welcome breeze during the hottest part of the day.
Victor the barman prvides his own brand of entertainment and the rest of the staff are friendly and helpful.
We hired a car and drove to the superb beach at elafonisis on the south west of the island. This was a 2 1/2 hour round trip but well worth the drive, you won't find a better beauty spot anywhere!!
All in all, we were very impressed with both hotel and resort and would highly recommend this location.

Stayed at the Sophia Beach for a week in mid-October 2009. Was a little worried as to how the weather would be at this time of year, however, the temperature was mostly sunny in the high 20's and we only had one of rain during our stay.

Could not fault the accomodation, rooms were fairly basic but very clean, the maid visits everyday except Sunday. The pool area overlooks the beach, this is shared with the complex next door. We didn't experience any problems finding free sunbeds around the pool due to the time of year.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The owners also had a gorgeous Cocker Spaniel Pup, who I wanted to bring home. All of our fellow guests were also very friendly and we met some really nice people.

We ate at Sophia's 3 times during our stay, although the menu was a bit limited, the quality and value of the food served was excellent, I thoroughly recommend the Greek Meze for 2, which was fantastic value at 12 euros.

The price of a meal in the resort was fairly reasonable on average we were spending 25-30 euro's, including drinks. I would recommend the Gondola, for Italian food, which is part of the Majestic Hotel. We also tried a couple of Greek Taverna's in the resort, one by the name of Oscars which was quite nice and another called the Village, where the food was also lovely. I can honestly say that we didn't have any bad experience's when eating out in Platanias.

The price of drinks in the resorts bars are more expensive than most other Greek Island's that I have previously visited, around 3 euro 70 for a large Mythos Beer and 3 euro's for a glass of white wine. A good bar to try if you like sport is the Planet Bar, which is situated next to the Chinese on the main street. The staff there are very friendly and they show the majority of Premiership Football matches.

During our stay we also took the bus to Chania for the day. The bus runs frequently from Platanias (approx every half hour) and it costs aroud 3 euro per person. I would recommend a visit the the Venetian Harbour, which is very picturesque. Whilst in Chania, we ate at one of the restaurants by the Harbour, the food was quite expensive and the quality was extremely poor.

Overall we had a superb time in Platanias and I would not hesistate to return again at this time of year.

Just returned from Sophia Beach a couple of weeks ago and I have got to say it is in a perfect location right on the beach. We stayed there for two weeks in a two bedroom apartment that sleeps six but there were only four of us. The apartment itself was pretty big, clean as the maid comes every day except Sunday and also had two large balconies.

There is a bar that serves snacks and I only went in it once but the lamb kleftiko was the best that I ate during the two weeks. The pool is shared with the hotel next door (Ideal Beach) which kind of joins on to Sophia Beach where there is beach bar and one night held a Greek Night.

The location is not only perfect for for the beach it is situated right in the centre of Platanias where there are tavernas, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, mini golf etc. The resort is really bustling but not in a rowdy or loud way as it is full of civilised Scandinavian families. There are buses every few minutes that stop on almost outside the hotel to Chania the journey takes about twenty minutes.

I can not fault this hotel and would stay here again mainly because of it's location, the only negative is there are not enough sun loungers around the pool due to the size of the pool area and it because it is shared but the beach is yards away where there are plenty for four euros for the day and are worth it . At the hotel next door, the opposite way from Ideal beach, we found that their pool was almost deserted most days with a small diving board, but ssshh, don't tell anyone.

I would recommend Sophia Beach.

Just returned from a week in Platanias, and had a great time. The rooms in the sophia beach apartments were basic, but clean. I would advise anyone going there to put money aside for air conditioning though, as it gets very hot during the nights; this costs 45 euros a week.
Outsice the apartments is a long path that leads to the pool bar and the beach, which had beautiful plants and flowers all along it. The location of the apartments is ideal, and the beach is right by the pool area. The pool is a great area for kids and the little ones always had a fun time there.
There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the surrounding area which were very nice, and we found many places that served food to suit all tastes.
There is also bank facilities, tourist information places, supermarkets and little shops where you can but gifts from. If you want to do shopping though, I would recommend Chania, which is about 20 mins away on a bus, and is a lovely place to spend the day and eat at.
The service at the sophia beach apartments was varied. The cleanliness was very good and the rooms were cleaned every day except Sunday. The cleaners were very polite and nice people who always did a great job.
The pool bar was average, as was the food, which was quite limited and wasn't good quality or value. There wasn't much entertainment at the pool bar, and it was usually quiet. The service from the staff varied from day to day.
I would recommend eating main meals in the town, which had some beautiful restaurants with very friendly service. I would strongly recommend the Araidne restaurant which is located just next door to the apartments for an excellent meal.
What I liked best was the location of the apartments, the pool area and the nearby beach, and the service received from the pool barman Victor, who always had a smile on his face. He was very friendly and extremely funny, and he really made the whole place come alive.
I didn't like the fact that the air conditioning was 45 euros a week, and the service that we received occassionally from other members of staff.
I would recommend this place for people who love to relax at the pool and beach, as they're right beside eachother.

We came back from Sophia Beach last night after spending 2 weeks there. Nice resort and clean studios. We were pleased because we had a studio on the upper floor. We paid for the 2 weeks air conditioning because the temperature was very hot and we did need it. The price was in fact cheaper than we paidy last year in Cyprus! The owner Theo is an excellent cook and his Kleftico and Stifado were far superior than in any of the other restuaurants down the road and cheaper. He uses fresh ingredients and the meat just melted in the mouth, I would recommend to eat there. Victor was very friendly and kept calling me Olive because of my love of Olives! Anna is Victor's 6 year old daughter who is very sweet. Sophia is Theo's daughter who runs the place and she speaks excellent English and is very friendly and jokey. Our rep Ruddi was a nice guy as well and he was very helpful (which to be honest, you can't say for all reps!) I would recommend these studios and apartments to anyone who want a relaxing holiday on the beach with friendly staff and good food!!
