Reviewed 22 February 2017

We had a truly atrocious experience at this hotel. I read the reviews prior to booking and chalked up the few bad reviews to the fact that every hotel, no matter how good, always has a couple bad reviews. Boy was I wrong! After having visited, I have to wonder if any of the 5/5 reviewers have ever even been to a real 4 or 5 star hotel!

From the moment we set foot in the hotel I knew I had made a big mistake. Upon presenting my reservation to the woman at the reception desk she immediately began almost yelling at us in a scolding tone: “You haven’t paid for two people, this reservation was for just one person, the price for this room is not the same for two!”

I booked the room through a third party website and was sure I selected 2 guests but the reservation was non-refundable and prepaid. The woman at the front desk was relentless. They attempted to charge me double the amount I already paid and when I protested they started talking about full board and meals. When I pointed out we did not have full board, not even half board, only breakfast and asked how much for an extra breakfast the woman changed her to story simply “This is Austria, in Austria we charge per person, in the whole country it is like this!” And for her this meant doubling the price. I was easily able to verify that this isn’t true with a quick search on a hotel site where I found another 4 star hotel within walking distance with only a 35 EUR per night difference between booking for 1 versus 2 guests with a similar large/upgraded room with king bed, balcony and mountain view (I walked by that hotel later and it looked like a real 4 star hotel too!).

When I continued to protest they offered me a price of 99 EUR extra per night. Yes you read that correctly, 99 EUR for a breakfast and to wash a couple of extra towels. No other extra services were provided to us or were part of my reservation and their marginal cost on this “extra person” was almost zero. They wanted nearly 300 EUR per night for the room in total but we settled on approx 250 EUR when I refused to pay double. Some “special price”! (I later learned that breakfast can be purchased for 15 EUR cash and spa center access for 12 EUR cash; it feels like they charged us for a full board we never received). With such a bizarre pricing policy it would make sense to simply book one room per person even if you intend to sleep together, why not have the extra bathroom(s) for “free”? While at the front desk I was also taken aback by the unfriendly sign warning that they will charge us 3 EUR for lost key cards; the same plastic key cards that any other 4 or 5 star hotel in the world will give you an unlimited number of without question for no charge if lose them or forget them in your room!

Note: To add insult to injury, both days our reserved breakfast table was set for only ONE person!

Determined to put this negative experience behind us and enjoy the rest of our trip, we found our next big disappointment in room. While the room was mostly as described, relatively clean (save for the fact that it looked like they hadn’t cleaned under the bed in months or even years), the room was missing a key feature that was in the description, the fireplace! What they called a “fireplace” was actually half of a “Kochelofen” protruding through the wall from the adjacent room, but not the half that you can build a fire in! This Kochelofen/“fireplace” was either just a non-functioning decorative feature or these two rooms used to be one larger room and the part that actually contains the “fireplace” was in the neighboring room. I’m not sure what they call that in Austria but where I come from we call it fraud. In any case, it was ice cold and remained so throughout our trip and there was no way to “turn it on” or heat it. The in room fireplace was the primary deciding factor in booking this hotel over other otherwise superior options and the fireplace simply wasn’t there.

The next disappointment was ugly exposed wiring on the wall and a complete lack of any toiletries whatsoever except… wait for it… combination hand soap, shampoo, body wash mounted to the wall like you might find in a backpackers hostel! Nothing else provided whatsoever, incredibly tacky, not even a bar of hand soap! Although I must admit the bathroom was very nice, modern and freshly renovated with top quality hardware; it was in fact the only feature of the hotel that could be considered 4r or 5 star level which made the lack of toiletries and wall mounted combination all the more out of place. Last but not least the “king bed” was two twin mattresses pushed together, it’s true this is very common in Europe but in a 4 or 5 star hotel that specifically advertises “king bed” it should be a real king mattress; we kept falling into the crack between the two mattresses. Our mini bar was also totally unstocked with nothing but a price list inside and the refrigerator did not work well.

Although it was never specifically stated that it would be open, it was a big disappointment to find the outdoor pool and jacuzzi closed. The indoor pool and jacuzzi are very small and dated. The jacuzzi is not hot enough, barely warmer than the pool. The pool area closes early at 19:00 and is generally crowded for most of the operating hours from 8:00-19:00.

The spa center is fairly nice but there are problems there too. Limited operating hours! The spa is supposed to be open from 10:00 - 19:00 except the Finish sauna, zirben sauna and steam bath, those only operate from 15:00 - 19:00. Which means that from 10:00 - 19:00 all you can use is the Tepidarium, the Infrared Sauna (seats only 2!) and the “rest room”. We never saw the “waterbeds” they supposedly have. We also found it peculiar that they have signs enforcing full nudity in the Finish Sauna and Steam Bath even though the area is open to guests as young as 15! I can’t imagine why a hotel should try to enforce nudity upon its guests, especially in a area open to children. Perhaps this is an attempt to make people uncomfortable so that they pay the extra 25 EUR for “private sauna” from 10:00-15:00 or 19:00 - 22:00? You use these facilities as part of your very expensive room for just 4 hours per day or you can pay extra to use it 8 hours per day; how nice.

I can also mention that the guests were about as “4 star” as the hotel itself. During our stay we witnessed screaming teenage girls and a husband and wife having a very loud argument (not once but twice) in the “quiet” spa center area and nobody intervened in any of those cases.

Still disappointed about our lack of fireplace, we decided to try to have a drink by the fireplace in the lobby, surely a 4 star mountainside Austria ski lodge would have a fireplace in the lobby right? Yes and no. They do have a fireplace, it looks very real, and there is wood in it, but they don’t light it! Instead they have a flat screen TV with a picture of a fire on it that they turn on only at dinner time! This was perhaps the most appalling thing we saw in this hotel. How cheap/lazy can they possibly be?

Parking is limited and requires double parking and leaving your keys at the front desk. Not a big deal but just add it to the list.

All in all an appallingly bad value and things that just aren’t acceptable at any hotel of any star level; a flat screen TV instead of a fire at a ski lodge, really!? For 300 EUR per night, you can get a very nice hotel room almost anywhere in the world except perhaps for a handful of the world’s most expensive cities. This was a huge disappointment and this hotel does not deserve a four star rating.

Because I’ve noticed that this hotel always attempts to portray negative reviewers as liars, I took great care to photo document everything described above, I can’t wait to see their response to this one.

I have to say though the location is wonderful, the views are amazing, the spa center would be fine if not for the limited working hours and the nudity rules and the breakfast buffet was in fact truly 5 star. You would do well to avoid this hotel at all costs and instead stay at one of the many others in town. I’ve visited over 50 countries and stayed in 4 or 5 star hotels in many of them, this is by far the worst value I’ve ever experienced in my life as well as the most blatant misrepresentation of a room. This hotel is not even remotely close to the level that the price suggests, only the breakfast buffet is up to par. Best of luck to anyone unfortunate enough to have booked this hotel, you’ll need it!

Dear "TGLong1986",

we are always highly appreciating the evaluations from our Guests, because are a very good tool that helps us to see in the right manner our hotel, our performance, our errors when happen and to improve the quality of services offered to the Guests. Negative evaluations are constructive so always welcome, only with a condition: that evaluations are based on real facts. Not like yours.

First of all, you made the reservation through an online portal, inserting only one guest. Therefore the portal generated automatically the price, you made the reservation for a wrong number of persons, confirmed and paid for it. For one person. And you arrived at check in two persons, pretending to pay the price you booked, for one. Everywhere in the world when you make a reservation, through an online portal or directly via website of the hotels, it is required to insert the correct number of persons, and, in function of that, the system generates the price you have than to confirm. In our hotel, too. It is enough to simulate another booking in the same portal and you see the difference, for one persons or for more, instead to evaluate in negative manner our staff that correctly applied the surcharge for the second person. The amount of costs connected to the overnight stay and hotel services for a Guest cannot be evaluated by a person that is not involved in the management of the company. And, independent of that, the prices are an internal company matter and must not be discussed on a public site in an evaluation, as you are doing.

The offensive words you are using like fraud, lazy, atrocious experience on a public site that may strongly influence potential clients that do not know our hotel to avoid it… we do not have the intention to comment, its speaks for themselves… It is enough to compare your evaluation with the evaluations and opinions of almost all Guest visited us (many are repeaters, making their holiday in our hotel every year…)… Let please everybody to have his independent opinion about us, without trying to influence through such affirmations you already made. Another thing: we never portrayed negative evaluator as liars…

We have holidayed as two families in the Austrian Alps for the last twenty five years and we have stayed in many great hotels but this was clearly the best. The rooms were extremely comfortable, the staff extraordinarily friendly and accommodating and the meals varied and lavish. A variety of sparkling soft drinks and teas and good coffee were available 24/7. The walk to the slopes was short and we could ski to within 30 metres on our return. The wellness facilities were comprehensive and run efficiently. Even the three small dogs who accompanied us were welcomed. This is a traditional Tyrollean hotel with fabulous ambience. We are looking forward to returning next year.

This was our second time using a kinderhotel. We really enjoyed this much more than our first experience because the hotel was just the right size. That meant the children could move from activity to activity, giving us more time

I also liked that they don't just have families. Loads of couples too, which meant it felt more like a normal hotel that was great for kids

Food was very good. Loads of choice and not just buffet that repeated. Most evenings was from menu card, with Saturday, when busy, from grill chef

Town is in a beautiful area. Will return

If you write down the details on your booking with us, you should please remain at the truth and that is that you have booked a holiday flat in our house Austria for one night and you have overlook the fact, that you also have to pay the cleaning fee und the visitor's tax. Accommodating enough, we have give you then a nice suite with breakfast for a very reduced price directly at the hotel. We've clearly shown on your reservation, that if you read ALL Details, you can see that a final cleaning and the city tax must be paid to the rental property.

This is our 4th stay at the tirolerhof and we still love it! Great hotel , casual atmosphere, great food. Fantastic ski school behind hotel too. Spa is amazing. Fun pool for kids. Younger kids love the hotel entertainment and the older ones can swim / play pool etc. The family suite rooms are amazing. It is a real one stop shop- arrive and they do all the rest for you!
