I know this is a long shot but the universe has a way of working . . . First of all, visit Izamal. It is a sweet village, a magic pueblo, one of the few we have seen that deserves this title. There are very few tourists, ruins are right in town, people are friendly, and food is good. And this hotel is lovely. The bed is comfortable and the breakfasts are the best we have had in 4 weeks of traveling in Mexico. The showers work; in fact everything in the bathroom is new and functioning, yippee!
Second, if you happen to go to the ruins on Calle 28 between 37 and 35, look for the dog with 6 new puppies. The pups look to be about a week old as of February 12, and the mom is very gentle. I have taken dog food to her a couple of days (it is cheap at the supermercado not far away), but now we are leaving. Maybe you would do the same over the next few weeks if you visit there? And, if some kind generous soul is here sometime in March, she will probably be ready for spaying. She will go into heat again as soon as the pups are a couple of months old, so the cycle will begin again if there is no intervention. There is no dog rescue/shelter here, according to a couple of people I asked, or I would have taken her and the pups to them and left money for the spaying. Just think how good you will feel and what good karma you will be spreading! I realize that she could indeed belong to someone who lives nearby and hope that they will be able to spay the mom (and the pups when they are older). If you see them, update this review please. Thanks!
