This little railway is certainly well worth the visit as it a great place to visit no matter what your age my be. It may not be a very long train journey but there is certainly plenty to see & do for everyone to enjoy. The shop is very large & is well stocked with a good variety of products to enjoy.

Plus points:
Reasonably priced
Volunteers friendly
Shop and cafe excellent
Museum half way up the line is interesting

Negative Points:
Journey short
Carriages uncomfy

On the whole best suited to younger children who would find a longer journey boring. However not bad value for money

Day five of our holiday and we were pretty much exhausted. We decided to have a quiet day 'close to home' so headed in to Porthmadog. The Welsh Highland Railway was fairly cost effective at just over £21 for a family of four. There aren't many places you can visit for a little over £5 each these days!

The station is well kept and looks like it came straight out of a Thomas the tank engine story. The journey itself is relatively short but the carriages and trains were beautifully restored and preserved. On the return visit you visit the engine sheds and museum which is really interesting. Plenty of Railway facts for the adults and things to play with for the kids. Definitely worth the money.

After having a fantastic experience last summer we decided to return this year.

An older gentleman (in an orange jacket), who we presume was a volunteer? we noticed was being very off hand and rude from the start of getting on the train. However we tried not to let it ruin our trip..

We went to the railway museum where our children were playing under our supervision. The same man in the orange jacket then poked his finger in our childs face told her off for no reason and said "you are sacked". We would have stayed longer but as we had a terribly upset child we left straight away.

Prior to this we noticed he was unnecessarily following people about picking on young children, it was totally over the top.

I enjoyed the engine-driving experience (after normal train service has finished). It was brilliant ! I had chance to drive the little engine up & down the line, then hauling the carriages in which my family were riding. The locomotive's crew were very helpful, pleasant and encouraging. The café was good, the shop well-stocked with books and souvenirs, and the museum was excellent. A great family venue, and a good alternative to the splendid but expensive Welsh Highland trains to Caernarfon. The volunteer staff were particularly friendly.
