“casa alveston provides excellent base for exploring southern Sicily”
Reviewed 9 October 2014 for a stay in September 2014

this house is spacious clean with a funky vibe, an excellent base for exploring, only 6 minutes stroll to the bars cafes etc of Modica basso. The roof terrace is good and was well used for breakfast, lunch and early evening drinks! Our stay was enhanced by Francesca who has the keys and is full of local knowledge . A gem!
Apart from help and advice from Francesca we used the Lonely Planet guide to Sicily. Absolutely invaluable.
Modica was a great base to visit everything on the Montabalno trail and much more. Highlights were Ragusa alba and Noto.
September /October seem a good time to visit but the car rental man said December was a good time too. Remember drink driving laws are strict so you will need to be based in a town so you can walk to bars and restaurants. We had a fabulous time!!!

“Lovely house and so convenient.”
Reviewed 14 June 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Spent 6 nights in this property and it was so relaxing. A 10 minute stroll into the centre of Modica and always somewhere to park the car outside the house.. A very nice property with everything you could want and ideally situated for exploring the surrounding area.

“Excellent place as a home base or just chilling”
Reviewed 14 November 2013 for a stay in April 2013

Whether chilling and enjoying the warmth and vista or using it as a home base for travelling to the coast or incredible cultural and architectural wonders this house is ideal.

You get more than you pay for and what you pay is ridiculously low, but with travelling from Stanstead to nearby Comiso airport it makes long weekends a real treat.
Great place

“A pleasant, traditional house in an old town with views of the town and an easy walk to the historic centre.”
Reviewed 3 May 2013 for a stay in April 2013

Everything we needed in the house was available (we did not need a television set) and the house was perfectly comfortable. There were good views of the town, and the roof terrace permitted very pleasant evenings, with the aid of Sicilian wine. There was a short walk down the hill to the centre of the town, where there were cafes and excellent restaurants (some with traditional Sicilian dishes). We found the people friendly and helpful. We had hired a car, which was easily parked in the street, and we had wonderful drives to the historic sites and towns of Sicily. In spring there was a beautiful profusion of wild flowers in the countryside. Don't forget your camera. Also use your mobile phone to send images back home to make your friends unhappy.

“A true home from home”

The drive from Catania was about 1.5 hours on a quiet "motorway" which made the travelling an easy hop out of the airport to the car hire place (pre-booked) quick and trouble-free.
Arriving in Modica from any road around the perimeter of the valley cannot help but make you sigh with delight at this old, baroque town. (Modica Alto is not so pretty which makes Modica Basa all the more beautiful).
The car parking space outside had a builder's truck in the way (building work on another house which was only temporary) but there was a space available on the road which was no more than 10 metres away so no trouble there at all.

Carrying the bags to the front door was the only troublesome bit but only having spent the day travelling but the relief of the cool, clean house made it worth it.
This house (home) is simply furnished and well finished so it was easy to navigate while investigating the rooms. Opening the widow in the bedroom to the hot sun yet cooling breeze while viewing the other side of the road could not help but bring a smile and the rest of the home is equally inviting.

The agents that supplied the key, etc. was very friendly and inviting and was keen that we enjoyed the house offering help as necessary and with the pack we got from the owners we settled to a cold water from the fridge on the first floor, a seat on the sofa (Chateaux D'Ax no less) then ventured to the roof terrace and chatted about where to go to eat that evening from the list of business cards supplied and notes supplied.

The rest of the week followed a similar pattern being able to wander only a few minutes down to the town and back passing fruit stalls and bars with the local "Conad" (a local supermarket chain) and others on the way past one church to the centre.

A lovely place offering all the amenities you might want from a "home base" to travel around this still unspoilt country.
With little traffic noise (considering it's proximity to the centre of town) and the car visible from the window to only down side to the week was having to leave ... we didn't want to.

Would definitely recommend this lovely home and with the advanced help from friendly & helpful owners as well as the agents, it enabled us to have a relaxing time in, fun times out and a chance to have a real break and explore the island as well as practice Italian (though many can understand English the Sicilan is quite different from Italian they understand Italian and help you if you try - even if you struggle).

Great place ... am definitely going again.

Liked best: It's proximity to town - far enough out to not be disturbed yet close enough to wander to it
Liked least: Being spoilt for choice of lovely places to go :) No WiFi but then we were on holiday and didn't miss it
