Perched atop a steep escarpment overlooking the back-packers rest over that is Ella, Heavens Edge is a hotel of polar opposites. If the overall service was as good as the views (which are undeniably stunning), this would be a gem of a hotel.

We were there for one quick night before getting the long train to Kandy. The hotel sits imposingly up a very steep drive. As our car struggled to reach the summit, a youthful member of staff peered at us from a dirty, muck-spattered kitchen window, akin to a prisoner gasping for air from the window of his cell. An eerie emptiness greeted us in the vast, silent lobby. The pool lapped unhappily outside, besieged by some excruciatingly uncomfortable loungers. It was deserted too. A pervasive feeling of sadness hung in the air. Tinny muzak drifted overhead.

A charming and helpful concierge attempted to mask these deficiencies. He, the leering kitchen-boy and another teenager appeared to make up the entire hotel staff. We passed room after empty room as we hauled our bags to our allotted birth for the night. It was relatively clean (being generous) and again the views were impressive. There was no a/c but a fan furiously whirred throughout the night. Three dirty plastic garden chairs made our balcony as unappealing as the pool, and not wishing to take our chances in the hotel restaurant, we left for the day, trekking in the Ella mountains.

The bed was uncomfortable and throughout the night dogs howled uncontrollably as if they felt our pain. We left without taking breakfast, the teenager on morning duty summoning a friend in a suped-up boy racer car to take us to the station.

It was a strange, unloved place, in desperate need of better management.

We were on a group tour. I was at first hesitant to book this hotel because of the previous reviews. However, I am so glad we stayed here. The views are amazing, staff is super nice and the rooms were clean. The food is somewhat basic but still tasted great. I think this is a wonderful location to stay and will come back. Shalin at the front desk was very helpful.

Avoid ! Terrible experience, apart from VERY basic room, the bedsheets hadn't been changed from last guests, shower terrible and dirty, dinner unsafe to eat. Because of noise from the road by cars, lorries, busses tooting to warn of bend in the road just very close to the hotel, dogs barking and howling, managed to fall asleep eventually around 2 am then to be woken by mosque calling to prayers at 5.12 which lasted for 1 hour (again very loud) by which time the road had come alive again! Will leave it at that. The only positive aspect was the beautiful views!

i went with a group of nine from my yoga studio in USA. we had pre set meals so i cant speak to other reviews about ordering off the regular menu but the staff was super hospitable and the food was good. the coffee was not to my liking at all. my room was clean but the shower had pretty much no water pressure on hot setting so, cold showers were the norm. im sure that, had i asked, the manager would have switched my room.
the pool was beautiful and clean. very refreshing way to end a day of hiking to Little Adams Peak in town or Ella Rock, which is accessible from a road very near the hotel.
beer and wine was available but no full bar.
the best perks were the staff and the amazing views . our group did yoga at sunrise each day on the lounge deck with the morning fog settling over the valley and the constant bird song surrounding . it was incredible.

the staff, especially the front of house man, were just awesome. anything you need they will try to get for you. very informative and congenial.
I was in Sri Lanka for 2 weeks, while Heavens Edge was not the nicest hotel i stayed at, it was definitely in the top of my list for best experience with staff, location and pleasantness.

Ella is a quaint backpackers town with a lot of shops and restaurants, most places serve a mix of local and western style foods. Also, check out the hand loom shop up the road toward Little Adams Peak. really interesting culturally.
